New York CNN —Texas’ famous longhorns are coming for Wall Street’s bulls. A new national stock exchange, based in Dallas, and backed by Wall Street heavyweights like BlackRock and Citadel, is looking to take on the world-famous New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. The newly formed TXSE Group announced its plans to file for registration with the US Securities and Exchange Commission later this year. “We’re thrilled to bring to fruition the long-held vision for a national stock exchange in Texas,” TXSE Group founder and CEO James Lee said in a statement on Wednesday. The result is that class A units account for more than half the apartment market, compared with one-third in the early 2000s, according to Moody's Analytics. High-end apartments that offer amenities up the wazoo — and rent breaks, to boot — represent a tantalizing alternative to the for-sale market right now. New York CNN —Nvidia, Wall Street’s favorite artificial intelligence darling, is continuing to swell to staggering heights. Nvidia is now the third company in the US, behind Apple and Microsoft, to cross that $3 trillion mark. Shares of the Santa Clara-based chipmaker rose 5.2% to about $1,224.4 a share, while Apple shares ended the session up 0.8% at $196. Earlier this week, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, said that the company would roll out its most advanced AI chip platform, called Rubin, in 2026. The reason for that is mostly the American consumer, with spending accounting for about 70% of gross domestic product. The criminal trial and conviction of (mostly former) national leaders has happened in stable, mature democracies, just as it has in former dictatorships. The track record of convicted leaders shows just how risky it is to try to predict what will happen. In 2017, South Korea impeached and later criminally convicted now-former President Park Geun-hye in a bizarre corruption scandal involving the influence of a friend and confidante. After a scandal emerged involving the state oil company Petrobras, Lula was convicted in 2017 of corruption and money laundering. “Political leaders can choose how they will speak about these institutions.”

In fact, for him at least, one is not about the other; Seinfeld openly disdains politics. Like Seinfeld, Carolla imagines parts of the 20th century as a better time. Women got more jobs and power (despite, Carolla writes, being “better at home with the kids than in the workplace”) and men became metrosexuals. The masculinity they defend is adamantly heterosexual, threatened not just by women but also by gay men and gender non-confirming people. In fact, the call for a return to 1950s-style masculinity has found a number of high-profile political supporters in recent years.

The Dow has fallen more than 1,000 points over the last three days alone — and there’s no sign of the negative momentum letting up. The Dow opened lower by 367 points, or 0.9%, Thursday morning. The S&P 500 was down 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.2% as lackluster earnings results from Salesforce (CRM) worried investors. That comes after a bad Wednesday where all 11 sectors of the S&P 500 closed lower. This week’s downturn has been fueled by a range of factors, including earnings and stronger-than-expected economic data.

Some analysts think that means good news for stocks in the second half of the year. While [gross domestic product] and the labor market seem to be slowing, earnings are accelerating,” wrote the Bank of America analysts. That means an improving manufacturing cycle but slowing services can lead to a divergence between market performance and economic performance. “We’ve witnessed records repeatedly break in both stock and housing markets over the past year.”In addition to unrelentingly high home prices, the housing market is also grappling with a chronic lack of homes on the market and elevated mortgage rates. Put together, it has resulted in a tough housing market, especially first-time buyers.

NEW YORK CNN —A Manhattan prosecutor said Wednesday a new indictment against Harvey Weinstein is possible as additional accusers have come forward with claims against the powerful Hollywood producer whose downfall became a symbol of the #MeToo movement. That trial similarly used “prior bad acts” witnesses and has also been appealed. In addition, three other women testified at trial as “prior bad acts” witnesses. They argued the “prior bad acts” witnesses should not have been allowed to testify and the court should not have given prosecutors the ability to question Weinstein about instances of verbal abuse and bullying on cross-examination. In sexual assault cases, their testimony can turn a difficult “he said, she said” case into a more convincing “he said, they said” case.

Lately, you’ve probably been asking yourself: What does it mean that Nicole Shanahan has been chosen as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate? I know, you’ve got a full and busy life. Jr. is, as we all know, running for president as an independent — an effort that will further publicize his anti-vaccination views and perhaps provide a point to his life. Shanahan, a lawyer who has never won elective office, is notable for being really, really rich. She’s a billionaire, thanks to her five-year marriage to Sergey Brin, one of the founders of Google.

OpenAI on Tuesday said it created a Safety and Security Committee led by senior executives, after disbanding its previous oversight board in mid-May. The formation of a new oversight team comes after OpenAI dissolved a previous team that was focused on the long-term risks of AI. AI safety has been at the forefront of a larger debate, as the huge models that underpin applications like ChatGPT get more advanced. Bret Taylor, Adam D'Angelo, Nicole Seligman, who are all on OpenAI's board of directors, now sit on the new safety committee alongside Altman. Leike this month wrote that OpenAI's "safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products."

But the idea of simply placing Kennedy atop the Libertarian Party ticket to marry his momentum with their organization left Kennedy with an embarrassing loss at the Libertarian Party convention in Washington. About half – 51% – said they would support Trump in a two-way matchup, compared with 37% who said they would pick Biden. The last third-party candidate to win a state and get Electoral Votes was George Wallace, who won Southern states in 1968. The only third-party candidate to outperform a major party candidate was former President Teddy Roosevelt, who outpolled Republicans after he failed to get their nomination in 1912 and then ran as a third-party candidate. But rather than focus on the relatively few people who turn out for a third-party candidate, why not look at the large number of people who don’t take part in elections at all?

New York CNN —Bifurcation is the word of the summer. Or it’s the word of the summer among investors, at least. It’s a word that the market gets hung up on and then all you do is hear that word. But I think that’s nearing an end, and so I would expect a slowdown in consumer spending. I’m not so sure that’s going to happen this time because their balance sheets and cash flows aren’t as strong.

Washington CNN —OpenAI said Tuesday it has established a new committee to make recommendations to the company’s board about safety and security, weeks after dissolving a team focused on AI safety. In a blog post, OpenAI said the new committee would be led by CEO Sam Altman as well as Bret Taylor, the company’s board chair, and board member Nicole Seligman. The announcement follows the high-profile exit this month of an OpenAI executive focused on safety, Jan Leike. “At the conclusion of the 90 days, the Safety and Security Committee will share their recommendations with the full Board. Following the full Board’s review, OpenAI will publicly share an update on adopted recommendations in a manner that is consistent with safety and security.”
