BARCELONA, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Colombian pop star Shakira has reached an agreement with former partner Gerard Pique over the custody of their two children following the break-up of their 11-year relationship earlier this year, Shakira's representative in Spain said on Tuesday. Shakira Mebarak, 45, and FC Barcelona defender Pique, 35, were together since 2011 but never married. They met shortly before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when he featured in the music video for Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", the tournament's official song. The custody agreement was reached one week after Pique announced his imminent retirement from professional football and departure from FC Barcelona. Prosecutors claim she failed to pay up to 14.5 million euros ($14.48 million) in tax on income earned between 2012 and 2014.

Lisa Osofsky, wearing a scarf, and her team from the U.K.’s Serious Fraud Office outside the court in London. LONDON— Glencore PLC, the commodities giant, said it would pay a penalty and costs of 281 million pounds, equivalent to about $320 million, after pleading guilty to British charges of bribing officials in West Africa for preferential access to crude oil. The penalty, imposed by a U.K. judge Thursday, is part of a wide-ranging bribery investigation by authorities in Britain, the U.S. and elsewhere that has hung over the global mining and trading business for years.

Tesla is a big customer of Glencore, which owns a mine in Ravensworth, Australia. Tesla Inc. held early-stage talks with Glencore PLC last year about buying a stake in the commodities giant, according to a person familiar with the matter. The electric vehicle maker’s interest came as manufacturers across the West look to secure supplies of so-called future-facing metals that are used in batteries and the renewable energy industry.
US airlines forecast the continued health of leisure travel heading into holidays. The TSA screened 15 million passengers last week at US airports, according to checkpoint data. Since the Labor Day holiday, airline traffic stalled out in September as the summer vacation season came to an end. Flight bookings have shown three straight weeks of steady improvements following a modest slow down after Labor Day, according to the report. The increased volume in international bookings more than offset a drop in prices for global travel, according to BofA.

Cargo ships carrying grain from Ukraine waited for inspection off the coast of Turkey last week. ISTANBUL—The United Nations and Turkey on Sunday scrambled to rescue an agreement that allowed Ukraine to ship grain via the Black Sea, a day after Russia suspended the deal in a move that threatens global food prices and puts pressure on Ukraine’s allies. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres was working Sunday to end the Russian suspension, a U.N. spokesman said, and the Turkish defense ministry said it was in talks with Russia to rescue the agreement. No ships will leave Ukraine while the Russian suspension is in effect, the ministry said.
LONDON— Rishi Sunak , one of Britain’s richest-ever prime ministers, is under pressure over his personal wealth, which opposition politicians say leaves him out of touch with a population strained by high inflation and bracing for spending cuts and a likely recession. His family wealth—estimated at 730 million pounds, equivalent to $846 million, by the Sunday Times Rich list—and tax position was highlighted in Parliament on Wednesday. One Labour Party lawmaker said the average nurse in the state-run National Health Service would have to work 20,000 years to accumulate the same riches.

WARSAW, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Four lion cubs and a black leopard cub from war-torn Ukraine have found safety in a Polish zoo, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) said, after surviving drone attacks and bombing in the first few months of their lives. The cubs were transferred to animal rescue organisations in Kyiv and Odessa after a crackdown on the exotic pet trade in Ukraine, and are now in Poznan zoo in western Poland awaiting onward travel. IFAW said it had partnered with a sanctuary in the United States and one in Europe to care for the cubs, who were bred in captivity and cannot be released into the wild. The Wildcat Sanctuary (TWS) in the United States will take care of the lion cubs. REUTERS/Afolabi Sotunde/File PhotoLAGOS, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Nigeria's main opposition presidential contender on Wednesday called on the government to immediately set up a flood disaster fund similar to one created to fight the coronavirus pandemic, to help victims hit by the worst floods in a decade. Atiku Abubakar said after a trip to oil-producing Bayelsa state, one of the worst hit, that the floods were a reminder of the impact of climate change and urged the government to immediately launch a Flood Disaster Relief Fund. "It is a national emergency relief fund, similar in scope to what was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic," Abubakar said, referring to a $1.4 billion fund that the government launched in 2020 at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Critics have accused the federal government of being slow to help flood victims.

LAGOS, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department on Tuesday authorised the departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families from Nigeria due to a heightened risk of terrorist attacks in the country. "The U.S. Embassy Abuja continues to have limited ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Nigeria," the State Department said. Nigeria's Department of State Services said the United States had previously issued similar warnings and urged citizens to remain alert. LONDON, Oct 21 (Reuters) - The chief executive of Vale SA (VALE3.SA) said on Friday the Brazilian iron ore miner is reconsidering a near-term spin-off of its base metals business and an eventual public listing. The Brazilian miner had a longstanding plan to sell the unit that was still being considered as recently as 2021. But rather than selling all or part of it, the company is now looking to separate and ring-fence the copper and nickel unit from the iron ore business as the two have different growth prospects, Eduardo Bartolomeo said at the FT Mining Summit. There is "huge growth" in base metals, whereas iron ore is a mature business, he added. Vale, once the world's top producer of the steel ingredient, said in September that global demand for nickel should increase 44% by 2030 to 6.2 million tonnes.
New York CNN Business —“Payday Friday” may soon be replaced by “Payday Wednesday.”This week, JPMorgan Chase, America’s largest bank, became the latest financial institution to offer customers early access to their direct deposits. Also, in the past year, several banks such as Bank of America, Citi and Chase have started scrapping overdraft fees. Services such as early access to direct deposits and waiving of overdraft fees come at a time when historically high inflation is draining consumers’ excess savings, said Mark Hamrick, chief economist for Bankrate. “At a time when prices have been high on a continuing basis, that has robbed consumers of purchasing power,” he said. So if there’s an interruption in income, that means individuals are going to be facing increased financial stress.”
Ukraine said its exports of agricultural products have recovered to around prewar levels, a revival that has helped ease pressure on global food prices and offers a bright spot in Kyiv’s fight against Russia. However, analysts say the rise in exports, which were hit hard by the war, hides continued hurdles for Ukraine’s globally important agricultural industry. The country relies on shipping grain out of the Black Sea, a route dependent on cooperation with Russia. Farmers, meanwhile, have planted fewer crops this year, and Russia still controls a large slice of Ukrainian farmland.
JPMorgan Chase is giving some customers early access to their direct deposits, a feature popularized by fintech rivals, as it hopes to attract users to a no-overdraft checking account. While smaller rivals including Capital One have said they are dropping overdraft fees, the CEOs of the three largest U.S. institutions have repeatedly refused calls to end the charges altogether. Instead, banks have drawn attention to existing products that protect users from overdraft fees, while still offering most of the functionality of full-service accounts. The service, which is targeted to households that earn around $55,000 or less a year, has about 1.4 million users, MacDonald said. Start-ups including Chime and Current have popularized early direct deposits as they've gained millions of cost-conscious users.
