In North Carolina, the signs read in Spanish, “WARNING: if you are not a citizen of the United States of America, you cannot vote in elections. Earlier this week, Forward Justice addressed a letter to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, calling for the signs to be removed because they constitute "unlawful voter intimidation." The letter was co-signed by nearly two dozen organizations, including the North Carolina chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. It’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote in elections in North Carolina and at the federal level — and illegal voting rarely happens. Early voting in North Carolina ends on Nov. 2.

It identified the deaths of at least 973 Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children who attended the boarding schools. During his remarks, Biden acknowledged that "the real number is likely to be much, much higher." “The federal Indian boarding school policy, the pain it has caused, will always be a significant mark of shame, a blot on American history,” Biden said. “Many Indian children suffered physical, sexual, and emotional abuse at these institutions,” the report found. More than 150,000 native children were forced to attend Canadian boarding schools.

Ulf Mauder/picture alliance/Getty ImagesMany observers fear the ruling Georgian Dream party will resort to anything to stay in power. This year, Georgian Dream pushed through a Kremlin-style “foreign agent” law, which critics say aims to shut down watchdogs who call the government to account. She described some of the statements made by Georgian Dream officials as a “copy-paste” of those from Stalin’s show trials. ‘Soviet mentality’A question puzzling many is why the formerly center-left Georgian Dream has made a sudden authoritarian pivot. Joining the EU would require cleaning up the country’s judiciary and giving up power if Georgian Dream is voted out on Saturday.

There is bipartisan concern about Mexico serving as a trade "back door" for Chinese exports to evade tariffs. CNN —President Joe Biden on Friday formally apologized to Native Americans for what he described as “one of the most horrific chapters in American history,” government-funded boarding schools that abused indigenous children and forced them to assimilate over a 150-year period. Three years ago, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, commissioned the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative to review the schools’ impacts on Native Americans. Their final report, issued this summer, found at least 973 Native American children died while attending these federal boarding schools. It’s the first time he has visited Indian Country as president and the first time in 10 years a sitting president has visited tribal lands. He paused his speech to say that the killing of people in Gaza “has to stop.”CNN’s Arlette Saenz contributed to this report.

The record shows that Mr. Trump often pursues his stated goals, regardless of how plainly they lack legal or moral grounding. For this reason, Americans would be wise to see this language as a genuine threat, not simply Mr. Trump on a tangent. Why You Should Believe Him As president, Mr. Trump repeatedly sought to use the power of government to punish his political opponents. But rules can be rewritten, and Mr. Trump has made clear that he intends to pick officials who will take orders from the Oval Office. Mr. Trump would have broad authority to pursue such a plan, though he’d need Congress to provide a lot of money.

It is vital therefore that we understand our history, to guide us to make the right choices in the future,” Charles said in his first speech as head of the Commonwealth. An army of Chinese-controlled social media bots is attempting to influence voters in Alabama, Texas and Tennessee while denigrating Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, according to research published Wednesday by Microsoft. The troll network has “parroted antisemitic messages, amplified accusations of corruption and promoted opposition candidates,” according to Microsoft. The bots amplified support for Blackburn’s election rival while spreading claims that she took money from pharmaceutical companies. Moore, McCaul and Blackburn are all running for re-election next month. The Microsoft researchers found the influence effort did not result “in high levels of engagement.” The report did not provide any metrics for how many Americans viewed the relevant social media posts.

CNN —President Joe Biden is expected to issue an apology to the Native American community for the federal government’s role in the abusive Indian boarding schools that forced Native American children to assimilate over a 150-year period, two sources familiar with the plans said. “The federally-run Indian boarding school system was designed to assimilate Native Americans by destroying Native culture, language and identity through harsh militaristic and assimilationist methods,” the White House said Thursday. In 2021, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, commissioned the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative to review the impact of the federal boarding school policies. While many AI companies have focused on training large language models, Groq seeks to make them run as fast as possible using chips it developed called LPUs, or language processing units. The gambit is that as AI models get better, inference — the part where the AI makes decisions or answers questions — will demand more computing power than training will, positioning Groq to reap the rewards. Groq's special (and tightly patented) sauce is its specialized chip design says Ross. Dean asked Ross's team to design a chip based on a specific type of integrated circuit they were using, and the result was Google's first tensor processing unit, a chip designed specifically for AI. Watching the AlphaGo program land a complex "shoulder hit" move on its opponent was validation for Ross that faster inference meant better, smarter AI.
