Elon," Trump said onstage at his Mar-a-Lago resort, thanking the world's richest person for spending two weeks campaigning in Pennsylvania. Musk's investment in Trump is already paying off, even though Trump doesn't take office until Jan. 20. Musk was introduced by Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick, who called the Tesla CEO the "greatest capitalist" in U.S. history. Having a role in a bespoke commission could give Musk power over federal agencies' budgets, staffing and the ability to push for the elimination of inconvenient regulations.

Trump defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, and Republicans claimed a majority of the Senate in elections this week. "We know kind of where the world is headed in a Trump environment because we've seen it before," said Jeffrey Solomon, president of TD Cowen, on CNBC's "Money Movers" Wednesday. One M&A advisor, who also spoke to CNBC anonymously, noted that Trump's disdain for Big Tech companies — historically active deal-makers — might keep them on the sidelines. Apparent GOP opposition to the CHIPS Act means that semiconductor consolidation might be challenging, the advisor noted, while cautioning it is still too early to know what a Trump presidency would mean. That advisor noted that smaller banks had been getting gobbled up for "some time," but that the pace and size of those acquisitions would likely ramp up under a Trump presidency.

US stocks had one of their best days in years and hit new records after Trump's resounding win over Kamala Harris in Tuesday's election. Both of those moves make sense, said David Kelly, the global strategy chief at JPMorgan Asset Management, in an interview on Wednesday. AdvertisementThe strategy chief has been adamant that higher tariffs — one of Trump's key proposals — would cripple the US economy and endanger the global economic expansion. Related storiesMost economists condemn tariffs, which are taxes on imports, because they tend to lead to higher prices and lower economic growth. Sean Gallagher, the global head of Lazard's small-cap equity platform, made a similar point in a recent interview with Business Insider when asked about Trump's tariffs and Kelly's stance.

The striking 3D reconstruction of Zosia, as locals nicknamed her, sheds light on the human found in the grisly grave. Archaeologist Dariusz Poliński, who led the team that unearthed Zosia’s remains, said it was a “mind-blowing” moment when he saw the reconstruction by Swedish forensic artist Oscar Nilsson for the first time. During the course of the 17th century, Poland and Sweden fought a series of wars, so Zosia could have been an outsider within her community. “Maybe because of some misfortune or the death of somebody else, they decided to open the grave,” Poliński suggested. A year after discovering Zosia’s grave, the same team found a child’s remains buried in an unusual way.

Moderna on Thursday posted a surprise profit for the third quarter, smashing Wall Street estimates, as its cost-cutting efforts took hold and sales of its Covid vaccine came in higher than expected. Before year end, the company plans to file for approval of its experimental "next-generation" Covid vaccine and combination shot targeting Covid and the flu. Moderna this year also expects to apply for expanded approval of its RSV vaccine, targeting high-risk adults ages 18 to 59. "I think the earlier launch and a steeper ramp drove a much higher sales number" for the Covid vaccine, Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said in an interview. Analysts had expected sales of $132 million for the RSV vaccine, according to estimates compiled by StreetAccount.

Krisztian Bocsi | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesDonald Trump's election as U.S. President could mark yet another major blow for the struggling German economy. The print came after the German economy ministry in October said it was now expecting the country's economy will contract, rather than grow this year. Trump's victory could make matters worse. Reliance on exportsThe German economy is heavily reliant on exports — and Trump is set to slap tariffs and other restrictions on imports. The German statistics office Destatis last month said that the U.S.' importance as a trading partner for Germany has been growing.

Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesDonald Trump's election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris marks a historic return to the White House — an extraordinary political comeback that is likely to have seismic ramifications for the global economy. The former president's litany of campaign pledges include steep tariffs, tax cuts, deregulation and a push to withdraw from key global agreements. Trump's favorite wordTrump has previously described "tariff" as his favorite word, calling it "the most beautiful word in the dictionary." And we don't see Trump's secondary tariff pledge — that baseline tariff, which would hurt European companies — as being all that feasible," Galbraith said. Analysts have warned that Trump's plan to impose universal tariffs are highly likely to raise prices for consumers and slow spending.

CNN —North Korean troops deployed to Russia’s Kursk region have fought Kyiv’s forces on the battlefield, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday, adding that the clashes resulted in fatalities. Zelensky said 11,000 North Korean soldiers are in the region, where Ukraine’s three-month military incursion into Russian territory has stalled. The New York Times reported earlier this week that a number of North Korean troops had been killed in a limited engagement with Russian and Ukrainian forces, citing senior US and Ukrainian officials. US officials had warned that around 10,000 North Korean troops are in the Kursk region and would be expected to enter combat against Ukraine. But Zelensky fears a greater role for North Korean troops if its allies fail to exert more pressure on Putin.

Trump reminded voters often that inflation wasn’t a problem when he was calling the shots. But if he’s not careful, Trump could have an inflation problem of his own. That will soon become a reality in Texas with a new restaurant that unites the two chains under the same roof. Dine Brands, which owns the two restaurants, announced that the combined Applebee’s-IHOP restaurant will open approximately 35 miles west of San Antonio early next year, marking the first time the company has brought the concept to the United States. Plans for the dual-branded restaurant were announced earlier this year as part of Dine Brand’s plan to grow the two restaurants, which both reported lackluster earnings Wednesday. The idea is to maximize revenue with the same footprint of a traditional restaurant. That’s because the two restaurants’ menus encompass all parts of the day (pancakes and eggs Benedict for breakfast and steak and wings for dinner) and will have staff trained to work with both.

President Trump has said he plans to install a blanket tariff of 10% to 20% on all imports, with additional tariffs of 60% to 100% on goods brought in from China. In the September Presidential debate, Trump characterized the plan as a way to extract money from rival nations. Economists, however, tend to agree that such a plan would would have the effect of raising prices on everyday goods. How tariffs workSimply put, a tariff is a tax on imports, though not one paid by the exporting country. Trump has floated the idea that a tariff policy could eventually replace U.S. federal income tax altogether, a convention that the nonpartisan Peterson Institute for International Economics called "literally impossible."

Japan is one stock market outside the U.S. that could win now that Donald Trump is headed back to the White House. Trump has previously proposed tariffs of up to 20% on imports, with a stringent tax of 60% on goods coming from China. Japanese stocks rallied, however, as the yen weakened with some investors expecting the U.S. defense partner stands to gain most from Trump's policies. However, Akutsu warned, with few positive earnings surprises in the market, a year-end rally could be "limited in scope." Takada said investors may have to weigh the near-term benefits of a Trump market against the risks of a possible trade war, even with a rise in the Japanese equity risk premium.

The JPMorgan Asset Management's U.S. fund, already the largest active ETF in the world, returned 21.5% in 2021, including 8.15% as income. In 2022, when the S & P 500 index nearly fell into a bear market, the fund lost just 3.5% in value. Over the past couple of years, the fund has returned 7% to 9% in income on top of capital appreciation. Spence stressed that JPMorgan did not intentionally time its entry into Europe on one of the most volatile weeks of the year for global markets. One such fund is Global X's covered call ETF XYLD , which marginally outperformed JPMorgan's JEPI over the past two years.
