DETROIT (AP) — General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis are meeting with United Auto Workers bargainers Thursday to see if they can reach a contract agreement that mirrors a deal signed with crosstown rival Ford. Nearly 17,000 striking workers at Ford left the picket lines when the agreement was announced Wednesday night and will return to work shortly. About 57,000 Ford workers still have to vote on the tentative pact. It wasn't clear what Ford agreed to in terms of battery factories. Ford had announced plans to build two battery factories in Kentucky, one in Tennessee and another in Michigan, but the Michigan plant is now on hold.

[1/2] United Auto Workers (UAW) union members picket outside Ford's Kentucky truck plant after going on strike in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. October 12, 2023. Total economic losses from the auto workers' strike have reached $9.3 billon, the Anderson Economic Group said earlier this week. Getting the deal ratified will be up to Fain and UAW leaders, and that is not assured. UAW workers at the company now called Stellantis rejected a proposal endorsed by UAW leaders in 2015. UAW leaders feared that the automakers would cut jobs at combustion engine factories and shift work to non-union joint venture battery plants or overseas suppliers.

Auto strike is now the longest in 25 years

New York CNN —As of Wednesday, the unprecedented strike by the United Auto Workers union against General Motors, Ford and Stellantis is now also the longest American auto strike in 25 years. The last time the union struck one of the automakers, with its 2019 strike at GM, the strike lasted 40 days. Wednesday is the 41st day of the strike that started on September 15. This strike is also the first time the union has walked out at all three automakers at the same time. All the companies are on record saying they want to reach a deal to end the strike, as has the union.

But if the UAW can reach a tentative agreement with Ford, it would be used as a model to seek similar contract settlements with GM and Stellantis. Typically, during past auto strikes, a UAW deal with one automaker has led the other companies to match it with their own settlements. About 32% of the union’s 146,000 members at the automakers are now on strike and getting by on $500 per week in strike pay. The UAW also wants traditional defined-benefit pension plans restored for workers who were hired after 2007, an end to varying tiers of wages for UAW workers, pension increases for retirees and other benefits. One key issue is whether to extend the national UAW contract to 11 U.S. electric vehicle battery factories.

Over half of employees (54%) say they have no idea how their company is using AI, according to a new survey conducted by UKG, a human resources and workforce technology company. That's despite the fact that the majority of C-suite leaders (78%) say that their company is using artificial intelligence today, according to UKG. Employees should be worried: 68% of C-suite respondents said their company has made AI decisions that are not in employees' best interests. DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union on Tuesday expanded its strike against General Motors to a highly profitable full-size SUV plant in Texas — a swift response to healthy profits and record third-quarter revenue for the automaker. The walkout came just hours after the automaker reported third-quarter earnings results that beat Wall Street's expectations. As we've said for months: record profits equal record contracts," said UAW President Shawn Fain in a statement. Fain's claims of record results for the automaker reference record third-quarter revenue, according to the union. The automaker disclosed in its quarterly update that the UAW strike has already cost it $800 million in lost production — prior to the Arlington disruption — including $200 million during the third quarter.

GM earnings give its restive workers an inch

On Tuesday, GM reported strong earnings that will embolden staff who have walked out at all three of the big Detroit firms. GM beat analysts’ expectations for third-quarter profit despite a $200 million hit from the strikes that started in September. That said, the firm run by Mary Barra also ditched its official forecast as it wrestles with the $200 million weekly costs from labor disruptions. Fortunately for GM, talks with its union seem to have narrowed in from earlier demands that would have vaporized the industry’s operating profit. Ongoing strikes by the United Auto Workers union, which represents GM employees, cost the company $200 million in the third quarter.

The Pentagon building is seen in Arlington, Virginia, U.S. October 9, 2020. "We don't necessarily see that Iran has explicitly ordered them to take these kinds of attacks," Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told reporters. Pressed on the issue, Ryder added: "We haven't seen a direct order, for example, from the Supreme Leader saying: 'Go out and do this.'" Ryder, however, said that the United States ultimately holds Iran responsible for such attacks by militant groups "by virtue of the fact that they are supported by Iran." The United States has also sent warships and fighter aircraft to the region to try to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups from widening the conflict.
