Japanese national flag is hoisted atop the headquarters of Bank of Japan in Tokyo, Japan September 20, 2023. REUTERS/Issei Kato/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsTOKYO, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Most Bank of Japan board members saw no need for additional tweaks to yield curve control and agreed to continued monetary easing to meet inflation and wage growth objectives, minutes of its September meeting showed on Monday. Board members shared the view that long term interest rates were moving in line with its market operation policy following the central bank's decision in July to make yield control more flexible, the minutes from the September meeting said. At the September meeting, the BOJ turned positive about its view on price growth, although central bank board members remained cautious about policy tweaks, Muguruma added. Several members said abolishing a negative rate and yield control policy would have to be discussed together with any successful achievement of the BOJ's 2% inflation target.

For decades, cities have duked it out for titles like "best city for business" or "healthiest city in America," but now they're starting to compete for a new title: best place to ride out dystopia. While Sun Belt cities are working to mitigate these challenges, the increased risks also create an opportunity for once forgotten cities. The declaration has been followed up with investments in key areas — climate resilience was one of the four pillars that made up the city's four-year strategic plan released at the start of 2023. And the cities that could become climate havens have their weather downsides — Buffalo will still have some harsh winters, too. If Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and other cities succeed in their climate-resilience agendas, they will grow, attracting residents from more at-risk areas of the country.

CNN —The arc of Rep. Mike Johnson’s career encapsulates the shifting priorities of the religious right in the era of Donald Trump. More than half of White evangelicals agreed with that statement as well – the only major religious denomination in which it found majority support. Yet both groups are much more influential inside the GOP coalition, with evangelicals representing nearly one-third of Republican voters and all White Christians about two-thirds. But in Congress, Johnson has also identified more with some of the party’s Trump-era priorities that revolve around demographic change. But each man appears equally committed to a vision of America that elevates the moral and political preferences of conservative White Christians over any other group.

(The church discourages these stories; a plaque on the grounds reads: “The only ghost at St. Philip’s is the Holy Ghost.”)Leaving race out of any history is a striking blind spot — even in a ghost tour. Born into slavery, Vesey had purchased his freedom in 1799 after winning a lottery, and became a prosperous carpenter. Some websites will tell you to look for Vesey’s ghost at the Old Charleston Jail, a structure that’s stood since 1802. Long after my own tour, I tracked down two longtime ghost tour guides, Joy Watson and Randy Johnson, who regularly take visitors up to the old jail. They told me that they had never heard of any Vesey ghost sightings there.

Amazon predicts bright holiday season, cloud stabilizing

Facing an array of challenges to its business, Amazon is trying to keep its mantle as the world's biggest cloud provider and online retailer. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission in September sued Amazon for allegedly inflating prices and wielding monopoly power, claims that Amazon has disputed. Microsoft, the second-largest cloud provider by revenue after Amazon, beat Wall Street estimates this week as its customers geared up for AI upgrades. Amazon Web Services brought in revenue of $23.1 billion, compared with analysts' expectations of $23.09 billion. For the current holiday quarter, the company forecast revenue in the range of $160 billion and $167 billion.

That has allowed forests to become four to seven times more densely wooded than they once were, Safford said. Investors in high-tax locales can protect some of their portfolio income from steep levies by adding state-specific municipal bond funds to their fixed-income roster. "In the muni bond fund market, we're seeing yields higher than they have been in more than a decade," said Amy Arnott, portfolio strategist for Morningstar Research Services. That's because while muni bond income is generally free of federal taxes, it can also avoid state levies if the investor resides in the state where the bond was issued. That's where state-specific muni bond funds come into the picture. See below for a chart of 10 large state-focused muni bond funds.

But shares of the life sciences and medical diagnostics company remain under pressure after management was forced to lower expectations for one of its key businesses. We used Tuesday's sell-off in Danaher shares to add to our position . Driving this forecast is an expectation for biotechnology sales drop in the mid-20% range, life sciences sales to decline by mid-single digit percentage points, and for diagnostics to be down about 20%. Assuming no additional headwinds in the fourth quarter, management reiterated their full year outlook for the bioprocessing base business to be down 10% on a full-year basis. The life sciences unit was hampered by pressure in the instruments business.

A land warfare expert said even if Kyiv can't break enemy lines, it can still cause pain for Russian forces. But even if Kyiv's forces aren't necessarily able to break through the enemy lines, they could still inflict significant damage on Moscow's army throughout the winter, a land warfare expert says. The key could be drawing out Russian forces into the cold by pushing into opportunities rather than attempting to batter their defenses. Just like the cloud transformed every software category, we think AI is one such transformational shift. Therefore, this notion of Copilots that we're introducing is really going to be revolutionary in terms of driving productivity and communication. Milton Friedman once famously said: "the business of business is business." One is, is the business of business just business? So, I think AI can actually be very helpful in many ways to be a little more empathetic and more understanding of the world.

Broadcom (AVGO), Caterpillar (CAT) and Eli Lilly (LLY) are among the 15 Club stocks with a streak of annual dividend growth that Wall Street expects to continue in their current fiscal years. Long-term investors should look to own companies with a history of dividend growth instead of chasing stocks with high yields, Morgan Stanley strategists said in a note to clients this week. However, Morgan Stanley's note made us curious to screen our portfolio for stocks with strong dividend growth track records that are expected to persist. To help us project which stocks will keep their dividend growth streaks alive, we also examined analyst estimates for total per-share payouts in their current fiscal year. Bottom line In any case, dividend growth over time is certainly welcome and can help increase total investment return, assuming the distributions are reinvested instead of taking cash.

There is still a risk inflation expectations spiral out of control, Deutsche Bank warned. Monetary policy has already been tightened dramatically, with the Fed having hiked interest rates 525 basis-points to slow surging prices. Long-term inflation expectations also remain close to the Fed's 2% price target, with 1-year and 5-10 year inflation expectations falling between 2%-4%. AdvertisementAdvertisementEasing monetary policy to aid growth may also be out of the question, given how sticky inflation has proven to be. As inflation inches closer to its target, markets put more pressure on the Fed to slash interest rates, as higher borrowing costs weigh heavily on asset prices.

Re-enter risk premia on what should be 'risk free' bonds. The renewed corporate profits upswing riffs off this relatively robust nominal growth picture too - as do still benign corporate debt premia. At the center of the storm is the 10-year Treasury yield , one of the most influential numbers in finance. The relentless rise in borrowing costs has blown past forecasters' predictions and has Wall Street casting about for explanations. Companies that can only issue debt in the high-yield market, which includes many retail employers, will confront sharply higher borrowing costs. Higher rates squeeze the housing industry and push commercial real estate closer to default. "So if banks haven't fixed their issues since then, the problem is only worse, because rates are only higher."

A steepening yield curve is when the spread between long- and short-term bond yields widens. Either the long-term yield rises faster than the short-term yield - a bear steepener - or the short-term yield is falling more - a bull steepener. Bear steepenings of the benchmark two-year/10-year U.S. Treasury yield curve, when the curve is inverted, are rare. In some ways, a positive-sloping yield curve is the natural order of things. Graff reckons the bear steepening is almost over and the curve will struggle to get past -20 bps.
