"These are different animals to banks, so we shouldn’t expect to supervise them in the same way as we supervise banks." Taking on oversight of shadow banks would require legislative changes, a time consuming process even under the best of circumstances, and requiring broad political agreement. But some have argued that such a change could ease liquidity stress, particularly if shadow banks gained access to the ECB lending operations.

A gunman shot a 17-year-old boy and a man in his 40s inside a moving subway car as it approached a station in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood during the evening rush hour on Tuesday, the police said. The shooting occurred just after 5:30 p.m. on a northbound C train as it pulled into the Ralph Avenue station, the police said. The 17-year-old sustained an injury to his right hand and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, the police said.
