Ford CEO Jim Farley poses for a photo at the launch of the all-new electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck at the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center on April 26, 2022 in Dearborn, Michigan. Ford Motor said Thursday pushed back production targets for its electric vehicles, citing slower-than-expected adoption. But Lawler emphasized that Ford's EV spending plan and its profitability goal for its electric vehicle unit haven't changed. In a statement, CEO Jim Farley argued that the more gradual ramp-up of electric vehicle production could be a boon for Ford. While Ford overall was solidly profitable during the second quarter, the Model e unit posted an operating loss of $1.8 billion.

Ford increased its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to a range of between $11 billion and $12 billion, up from a prior forecast $9 billion and $11 billion. It also upped its expected adjusted free cash flow to a range of $6.5 billion to $7 billion from earlier guidance of $6 billion. However, he said, electric vehicle adoption is taking place more slowly than the company expected, in part because of higher costs. Ford's traditional business operations, known as Ford Blue, earned $2.31 billion during the quarter, while it's Ford Pro commercial business earned $2.39 billion. Ford said its adjusted earnings before interest and tax, or adjusted EBIT, jumped to $3.79 billion, up from $3.72 billion a year ago.

Tesla appears to be driving a Cybertruck disguised as an F-150, according to unverified photos. Elon Musk's biographer said Musk was inspired to build Cybertruck because Ford trucks are "boring." New images of Tesla's Cybertruck appear to show the carmaker has disguised one of its models as Ford's F-150 pickup truck. Up until recently, Ford has been one of few automakers to produce an EV pickup truck. Last year, Ford said it delivered over 13,000 electric F-150 trucks as the company worked to ramp up production and fulfill about 200,000 reservations.

[1/3] FILE PHOTO-A Porsche 911 Carrera S is on display during the 75 years Porsche sports car exhibition "Driven by Dreams" in Berlin, Germany, January 25, 2023. The automaker will electrify its compact SUV Macan, followed by the 718 sports car and then the best-selling Cayenne, Porsche e-fuels team leader Karl Dums said. Porsche's EV plans and e-fuels investment are separate, he said. Major automakers will likely avoid new e-fuel models after 2035, having already committed $1.2 trillion to electrification. A host of smaller carmakers also want to sell luxury, high-performance e-fuel models to customers rich enough to afford the expensive fuel, which today can cost up to 10 pounds ($12.90) per liter.

GM's higher profit outlook also reflects decisions to ratchet down spending. The automaker said it also will expand a previously announced drive to cut operating costs by $2 billion through the end of 2024. GM will now target an additional $1 billion in overhead, marketing and other costs, Jacobson said. GM's decisions to cut new product investment and operating costs come as the automaker's profit margins are under pressure. GM's pretax profit rose from a year earlier to 7.2% of revenue in the second quarter.

GM said adjusted pre-tax profit and margins in its key North American market fell from the first quarter, despite a jump in revenue and per-vehicle transaction prices. GM said it now expects full-year net income of $9.3 billion to $10.7 billion, up from a previous forecast of $8.4 billion to $9.9 billion. GM's pre-tax profit margin for the first six months of the year fell to 8.3% of revenue, down from 8.9% a year ago. Barra said GM can cut capital spending by simplifying its product line, reducing the number of different combinations of colors and features offered. In the first half, GM built about 50,000 EVs, most of them the older Bolt model, which is priced from $27,495.

Shares of GM were down roughly 4% in morning trading Tuesday despite quarterly results that topped year-ago performance. Analysts during the call questioned the company's pricing strategies, EV profitability guidance and ability to hit previously announced targets for the vehicles. GM produced 50,000 EVs through the first half of this year for North America, in line with internal targets but far slower than many expected. A majority of that production was its outgoing Chevrolet Bolt models, rather than new EVs that utilize the automaker's "Ultium" batteries and technologies. She said GM was "surprised" how little progress the supplier had made.

The Bolt does not align with GM's long-term EV technology strategy, but it is the Detroit automaker's best-selling and most affordable EV in North America, by far. Barra and GM officials did not say how much the new Bolt would cost or where it would be built. For GM, the Bolt has been the mainstay for its North American EV sales. In the first six months of this year, U.S. Bolt sales totaled 33,659 vehicles, outselling Ford's Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai's Ioniq 5 and other EVs from established automakers. Bolt sales rebounded this year after GM was forced to halt production of the car for nearly six months to fix problems linked to battery fires.

Including the $7,500 Biden tax credit, the price is down 35%. "Tesla's manufacturing tax credits should help to at least partially offset some of the price cuts Tesla had to implement to spur demand," Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein said in an interview. Reuters GraphicsDespite benefiting from the tax credits, Musk has criticized U.S. President Joe Biden and many of his policies and called for subsidies to be eliminated. Many analysts exclude the regulatory credits Tesla collects from other automakers, but include the Biden manufacturing credits, when calculating its underlying profit margin. CNBC's Jim Cramer said he thinks tech giants Netflix and Tesla will be only temporarily dinged by their stocks' drops on Thursday and will rebound. He said Netflix is transforming its business model into a streaming service with a cheaper subscription plan that includes advertisements. According to Cramer, Netflix has shown that it can make more money with consumers using its ad-tier plan than its pricier traditional subscription. He said he thinks this plan will enable Netflix to raise its subscription prices while also making money on ads. Although the project is still in its infancy, Cramer thinks it will be a game-changer for Netflix's profitability.

We're raising our eyebrows at Ford 's (F) new price cuts on its popular electric pick-up truck. Jim Cramer called Ford's price cuts "counterintuitive" given the robust demand the F-150 Lightning has been seeing so far this year. In February, the company had to pause production and shipments on its electric pickup truck due to a potential battery issue. Meanwhile, prices for new electric vehicles were down 20% for the month driven by Tesla's EV price cuts earlier this year. TOKYO, July 14 (Reuters) - Japan's Mazda Motor (7261.T) needs to overhaul its strategy in China, the world's biggest auto market, where it faces increasingly tough competition from domestic players, the automaker's chief executive said on Friday. CEO Masahiro Moro said business conditions for Mazda in China, where it has a joint venture with Chongqing Changan Automobile (000625.SZ) and China FAW, would become increasingly tough over the coming year to 18 months. Its sales in China peaked in 2016 at just over 316,000 vehicles, separate industry data showed. Mazda is not alone in finding the Chinese market increasingly tough. Looking beyond China, Moro said if Mazda were to begin EV production in North America, it would happen after 2027, which marks the end of the middle phase of its business plan for this decade.

July 12 (Reuters) - Lucid Group (LCID.O) said its second-quarter production dropped from the previous three months while deliveries stayed flat, sending the shares of the luxury electric-vehicle maker down about 6% on Wednesday. The Saudi Arabia-backed startup has been struggling to ramp up production in the face of supply chain issues, while a price war started by market leader Tesla (TSLA.O) in January has intensified competition. Lucid delivered 1,404 vehicles in the quarter to June 30, compared with 1,406 deliveries in the previous quarter. The company had trimmed its 2023 production forecast and reported a lower-than-expected first-quarter revenue in May as it took a hit from Tesla's price war and rising interest rates. The company said it would report financial results for the second quarter on August 7 after markets close.

WASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators said on Thursday they are seeking updated responses and current data for an ongoing probe into 830,000 Tesla vehicles and the automaker's advanced driver assistance system Autopilot. The agency is investigating the performance of Autopilot after identifying more than a dozen crashes in which Tesla vehicles struck stopped emergency vehicles. It is also investigating whether Tesla vehicles adequately ensure drivers are paying attention when using the driver assistance system. In June 2022, NHTSA upgraded the probe it first opened in August 2021 to an engineering analysis - a required step before it could potentially demand a recall. Since 2016, NHTSA has opened 40 Tesla special crash investigations where advanced driver assistance systems such as Autopilot were suspected of being used with 20 crash deaths reported.

July 6 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) on Thursday followed rivals in reporting a rise in second-quarter U.S. auto sales, driven by easing supply chain snags and pent-up demand for personal transportation. Industry-wide U.S. new vehicle sales in June were 1.37 million units, with an annual sales rate of about 15.7 million, according to data released by Wards Intelligence on Wednesday. Ford's quarter was powered by a 26% jump in truck sales, one of the company's main profit drivers. Sales of the electric version of the company's popular F-150 truck more than doubled to 4,466 vehicles from last year. However, Ford's overall EV sales fell 2.8% to 14,843 vehicles amid lingering supply snags.
