The Washington Post | Getty ImagesFanatics is moving into livestreamed shopping around collectibles and trading cards, hiring a former Snap and Alphabet executive to launch its new business later this year. Fanatics Live, which will have a standalone app and a coinciding website, plans to launch in the second half of 2023. Only 31% of U.S. adults have even heard of live shopping, with just 22% saying they've participated in a live shopping event, according to a December poll by Morning Consult. Ebay, which said it saw trading card sales increase 142% in 2020, acquired trading card marketplace TCGPlayer for $295 million in August. While Fanatics Live could move into other forms of entertainment and collectibles over time, it will solely focus on trading cards initially.
Jan 31 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden on Tuesday will visit New York City to tout new infrastructure funding for a critical underwater tunnel that connects Manhattan and New Jersey, an effort that has been mired for more than a decade in partisan bickering and ballooning budgets. The federal government, New York, and New Jersey will split the estimated price tag of $16.1 billion. Federal funding will pay for nearly half, while the two states will pick up the rest. Biden plans to tout a $292 million grant from the Transportation Department for the Hudson River Tunnel project. "While others tried to shut this down, I made clear this is a national priority," Biden told a group of lawmakers and supporters gathered at a rail yard at the Hudson River tunnel, the nation's busiest rail corridor. On Tuesday, Biden announced that the administration has awarded nearly $1.2 billion from the law's new national infrastructure project assistance discretionary grant program for nine projects across the country, White House officials said. I've donated my hair to charity four times, but I don't plan to again because there's less need now. I've donated my hair to charity four times. Human hair wigs usually have to be cut, colored, styled, and fit specifically to the person's head, Hernandez-Salas said. There's just much less demand for human hair wigs than there was years ago. Before she lost her hair, Melore donated it and got a wig from the American Cancer Society all in the same day.
Autism rates tripled among children in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area from 2000 to 2016, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Pediatrics. Although there is no medical test for autism, the CDC has established a network of 17 sites across the country that estimate autism rates based on a combination of formal medical diagnoses and records from schools and health care providers. Nationally, the rise in autism rates has been similar to the trend in New York and New Jersey, according to a 2021 CDC report. But there’s probably more to the story: Genetic factors, and perhaps some environmental ones, too, might also be contributing to the trend. Beyond the improvements in diagnostics, genetic factors could be driving up autism cases on their own, experts said.
A new terminal at New York's JFK will be partly powered by a microgrid, batteries, and fuel cells. John F. Kennedy International Airport's $9.5 billion New Terminal One will be partly powered by a microgrid with 11.34 megawatts of electricity from rooftop solar, gas fuel cells, and battery storage. A system that captures waste heat from the fuel cells will chill and warm water. The rooftop solar array — made up of more than 13,000 panels — will be the largest in New York City and at any US airport terminal, AlphaStruxure said. Installing fuel cells, instead of diesel generators, is estimated to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide, a toxic air pollutant, by 98%, Macias added.
Containers sit at the GCT New York container terminal on Staten Island on October 20, 2022, in New York City. The Port of Long Beach moved 9.13 million TEUs last year. "These 9.5 million TEUs is more than 27% of 2019 levels," said Bethann Rooney, port director of the Port of New York and New Jersey. "This is not sustainable if we are going to handle 14 million TEUs in the not too distant future," she said. If they have stability on the West Coast, it doesn't really make sense to spend the extra two weeks crossing to go to the East Coast.
Longtime veterinarians told CNBC the service can have some benefit for minor situations, or for people who don't have easy access to vet care. Because when you research pet health, you'll find that there's a specific term called VCPR," Singh said. Banfield Pet Hospital is owned by Mars Veterinary Health, a subsidiary of pet food and candy conglomerate Mars. "If you notice, there has been little to no innovation in pet health over the last decade, and yet in the last three years, there's been more innovation in pet health than in the last decade or 20 years," Singh said. Fanatics is in discussions to acquire the BetParx sportsbook, as the sports merchandising company looks to take a bigger position in sports betting, according to people familiar with the matter. Representatives for Fanatics and BetParx declined to comment. Fanatics has been seeking a deal in the sports betting space for some time. The company is opening Fanatics Sportsbook at FedExField, the stadium of the NFL's Washington Commanders. "The reports that I would let a dog die is shocking & insane," the freshman lawmaker from New York tweeted Thursday morning. Santos' office did not immediately provide any of those photos when asked by CNBC. Santos then became elusive, and finally told Osthoff he had moved the money into his charity to use "for other dogs," the veteran told Patch. If Santos were to leave office, it would likely trigger a competitive special election in New York for his seat. Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., made a similar argument Thursday when asked by CNN whether he believed Santos should resign.
Rep. George Santos (R-NY) walks to a closed-door GOP caucus meeting at the U.S. Capitol January 10, 2023 in Washington, DC. Embattled Republican Rep. George Santos has denied allegations that he took off with thousands of dollars he helped raise for a disabled veteran seeking a lifesaving surgery for his service dog. Santos, who already faces bipartisan calls for his resignation, denied the reporting as "Fake" in a text to Semafor on Tuesday night. "No clue who this is," Santos added in a text to the outlet. Santos rebuffed Osthoff's request to let him use the money to take his dog to another vet, according to screenshots of text messages reported by Patch.

New York and New Jersey have both been dealt recent court defeats over gun measures. A federal judge Monday blocked enforcement of a New Jersey law that prohibits the carrying of firearms in certain public places, ruling it violates the Second Amendment. New Jersey can’t enforce bans on concealed weapons in public libraries and museums, bars and entertainment facilities, according to the ruling by U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb. She also blocked a provision that required businesses to indicate that they specifically allow people to carry on their premises.

Mario Tama | Getty ImagesNearly a third of logistics managers at major companies and trade groups say they do not know how much trade they would return to the West Coast once an International Longshore and Warehouse Union, or ILWU, labor deal is reached, according to CNBC's supply chain survey. Of those surveyed, 49% said they did not divert trade, compared to 40% who said they did. Zoom In Icon Arrows pointing outwardsOver half of those respondents told CNBC the main reason for moving trade away from the West Coast was the threat of an ILWU strike. Kenny Simpson and Krystle Moore have amassed a $19 million, 47-unit real estate portfolio. With a recession on the horizon, inflation remaining at decades-high levels, and rapidly climbing interest rates, the future of the real estate market heading into 2023 seems bleak. "I think the general theme of 2023 is going to be significant opportunities for people in real estate," Moore told Insider in a recent interview. A Fed pivot will also help stimulate the real estate market since the industry is highly sensitive to rates, boosting jobs in construction and lending. Finding emerging markets can be a goldmine for real estate investors, since these areas are oftentimes cheaper than their more established counterparts.
A 2017 tax law capped SALT deductions at $10,000The House Ways and Means Committee's release of six years of Trump's tax returns follows a lengthy fight over making them public. New state rules provide a SALT workaroundHowever, the income tax returns don't provide the full picture, experts said. Here's why: Many states issued rules after 2017 that offer a workaround to certain business owners impacted by the $10,000 SALT cap. The workarounds would apply to business income Trump derived from partnerships, S corporations and some LLCs after 2017. While it's likely Trump leveraged these tax rules, it's impossible to know without additional information like business tax returns if he did and the extent to which he may have benefited, experts said.
Meanwhile, abortion-rights advocates and the ballot initiative groups they’re working with said preliminary efforts are also underway in Florida, Missouri and other states. Meanwhile, voters in two Democratic states, California and Vermont, chose to officially protect abortion rights in their constitutions. “Reproductive rights is a winning issue. The Dobbs decision had a huge impact,” said Chris Melody Fields Figueredo, the executive director of the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center, which works with progressive organizations to help advance citizen-led ballot measures. “And what we know — that about a majority of Americans actually support reproductive rights and abortion access — means we have an incredible opportunity.”
Retailers Pull Back From Using Chartered Cargo Ships

Retailers are moving away from using chartered ships to get around pandemic-triggered disruptions now that congestion at ports has cleared and pressures in supply chains have eased. A representative for Home Depot said it stopped using chartered vessels earlier this year as space opened up in global shipping. Party City started booking space on chartered vessels in mid-2021 in advance of Halloween, its busiest time of year, said Bruce Dzinski, Party City’s director of international transportation. Will Harwood, a spokesman for Lidl, said Tailwind owns two container ships and can carry additional cargo on other chartered vessels. Most other companies, like Home Depot and Costco, relied on third-party companies to operate chartered ships.
Still, it's unclear how these vulnerable coastal communities — and others across the country — will ultimately fare. In this scenario, most of the communities surrounding Jamaica Bay would be inundated every day by high tides. These types of natural projects, some of which are already underway at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, would be balanced with the Army Corp's man-made engineered solutions. Additionally, the proposed Jamaica Bay Storm Surge Barrier, located to the east of the Marine Parkway Bridge, would close during major storms. Shoreline restoration is underway at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens.
Reuters —Microsoft Corp was hit on Tuesday in US court with a private consumer lawsuit claiming the technology company’s $69 billion bid to purchase “Call of Duty” maker Activision Blizzard Inc will unlawfully squelch competition in the video game industry. The private lawsuit also seeks an order blocking Microsoft from acquiring Activision. It was filed on behalf of 10 video game players in California, New Mexico and New Jersey. The proposed acquisition would give Microsoft “far-outsized market power in the video game industry,” the complaint alleged, “with the ability to foreclose rivals, limit output, reduce consumer choice, raise prices, and further inhibit competition.”A representative for Microsoft did not immediately comment on Tuesday. The FTC previously said it sued to stop “Microsoft from gaining control over a leading independent game studio.” The agency said the merger would harm competition among rival gaming platforms from Nintendo Co Ltd and Sony Group Corp.
It was filed on behalf of 10 video game players in California, New Mexico and New Jersey. A Microsoft representative on Tuesday defended the deal, saying in a statement that it "will expand competition and create more opportunities for gamers and game developers." After the FTC sued, Microsoft President Brad Smith said, "We have complete confidence in our case and welcome the opportunity to present our case in court." Private plaintiffs can pursue antitrust claims in U.S. court, even while a related U.S. agency case is pending. The FTC previously said it sued to stop "Microsoft from gaining control over a leading independent game studio."
