Hanif Abdurraqib Just Misses His Dog
  + stars: | 2024-04-11 | by ( Wilson Wong | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“It’s a real culture shock and emotional shock,” Hanif Abdurraqib said in a recent phone interview. The poet, essayist and cultural critic was describing his experience of being surrounded by hundreds of readers in a room while going on tour — made more challenging while fasting for Ramadan — for his best-selling book, “There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension.”His reaction stems partly from the fact that he hasn’t done the usual fanfare that accompanies a book launch since 2019 — the last year he toured in person. And in that time, much has changed for Abdurraqib (more so, perhaps, than other writers): He bought his first home in the neighborhood of Bronzeville in his hometown, Columbus, Ohio; he released his best-known book, “A Little Devil in America,” part memoir and part love letter to Black performance in America; and he was awarded a MacArthur fellowship and an Andrew Carnegie Medal, among other accolades. “I have a lot of gratitude, and everyone is really kind,” said Abdurraqib, 40, who is also a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine. “Because I haven’t been on tour for so long, the responses to my work have grown in my time away, so it’s been good.”

"There's this tendency in the welfare state to sort of outsource the elderly care," Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, director of the Wellbeing Research Centre at Oxford University told CNBC Make It. Although home-care for the elderly improves their wellbeing, it can also place pressure on younger generations. The so-called sandwich generation refers to middle-aged people who have elderly parents to care for, as well as their own children who are still dependent on them. The younger generations have to support their elderly parents or grandparents. "This would entail defining one's family value system, setting out personal goals, life aspirations, allocating and committing personal resources," Wong suggested.

In the fall of 2016, the Obama administration sealed a major military agreement with Israel that committed the United States to giving the country $38 billion in arms over 10 years. “The continued supply of the world’s most advanced weapons technology will ensure that Israel has the ability to defend itself from all manner of threats,” President Barack Obama said. It was a period of relative calm for Israel, and few officials in Washington expressed concern about how the American arms might one day be used. Now that military aid package, which guarantees Israel $3.3 billion per year to buy weapons, along with another $500 million annually for missile defense, has become a flashpoint for the Biden administration. A vocal minority of lawmakers in Congress backed by liberal activists are demanding that President Biden restrict or even halt arms shipments to Israel because of its military campaign in Gaza.

The Biden administration is pressing Congress to approve a plan to sell $18 billion worth of F-15 fighter jets to Israel, as President Biden resists calls to limit U.S. arms sales to Israel over its military offensive in Gaza. The State Department recently sent an informal notice to two congressional committees to start a legislative review process for the order, a first step toward the department’s giving formal authorization for the transfer of up to 50 of the planes. The F-15 order was reported earlier by Politico and CNN and confirmed by two U.S. officials. The deal, which would be one of the largest U.S. arms sales to Israel in years, would also include munitions, training and other support. Although the United States has expedited some arms for Israel’s current campaign against Hamas, the F-15s would not be delivered for at least five years, the U.S. officials said.

President Biden spoke with Xi Jinping, China’s leader, in a call on Tuesday morning that was aimed at addressing a wide range of combative and cooperative issues, as the United States grapples with wars and other global crises, according to a White House statement. The topics on Mr. Biden’s agenda included fighting narcotics production, the Middle East conflict and China’s support of Russia during the Ukraine war, a senior administration official said. But it was a crucial marker during a pivotal political year and as the countries try to steady a relationship that hit a multi-decade low last year. The call took place days ahead of a trip to China by Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen, who will be followed soon afterward by Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, the official said. Those would be the first visits to China by cabinet members this year; both officials traveled to Beijing last year to stabilize relations after tempers flared during the Chinese spy balloon episode.
