They save about $165 a month, on average, said John Scott, director of Pew's retirement savings project. It's unclear how many other companies instead opted to sponsor their own 401(k) plan or other workplace plan. Why states are stepping inThere's a common thread here: A realization that people aren't saving enough for retirement, Scott said. The typical saver age 55 to 64 has just $71,000 of 401(k) savings, according to Vanguard data. Pew estimates that state spending will rise by $334 billion from 2021 to 2040 due to insufficient retirement savings.

In testimony before a House committee, the university leaders said there was a fine line between protecting free speech and allowing protests, while also combatting antisemitism. “Harvard must provide firm leadership in the fight against antisemitism and hate speech even while preserving room for free expression and dissent. This is difficult work, and I admit that we have not always gotten it right,” said Claudine Gay, of Harvard. In recent weeks, the federal government has opened investigations into several universities — including Penn and Harvard — regarding antisemitism and Islamophobia on campus. Rep. Bobby Scott of Virginia, the committee's ranking Democrat, criticized Republicans for “stoking culture wars” while claiming to be combatting discrimination on campus.

Few investors are more emblematic of the no-interest-rate private market frenzy than billionaire Scott Shleifer. Tiger's venture approach in 2020 and 2021 — constantly described as unsustainable by rivals — included maneuvers such as offering start-ups more money than they were asking and emailing founders term sheets after a single meeting. Shleifer's reputation and personal wealth grew with Tiger's venture success. As Tiger was fundraising late last year, investors learned of a $10 million settlement Tiger Global made to a former female employee. At least one Tiger investor was surprised to hear about it from Coleman and not Shleifer himself.

Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, who died Tuesday at age 99, once offered what turned out to be sage advice to his buddy and investment legend Warren Buffett: live life backwards. Munger years ago told the somewhat younger Buffett, 93, how he should live his life, according to CNBC's Becky Quick, speaking on CNBC's "Closing Bell: Overtime." Munger told Buffett, "he should write his obituary the way he wants it written, and then live his life accordingly," Quick said. "Look at things, and live backwards."

Many are delaying the cost as buy now, pay later programs are expected to have their biggest month ever. Many are paying via "buy now, pay later" platforms such as Klarna or Afterpay, which let shoppers pay in installments every week or month. Buy now, pay later also allows people to borrow less expensively as they get the pricing interest-free if paid off in time. Indeed, the Fed's "2022 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking" found that 83% of respondents paid off their buy now, pay later programs on time. Compounding the problem is that people tend to spend more when using buy now, pay later programs, suggesting an overconfidence in what they can afford.

But researchers have found that when someone does admit they were wrong, they are not seen as less competent. As a psychology expert, I've found that highly likable and successful are "admitters," and they aren't afraid to say three simple words: "I was wrong." The key is to remind yourself that even though your behavior was wrong, you can change it in the future. And just because you are admitting wrongdoing, that doesn't mean you are saying you're a bad person. When someone tells you that you're wrong, instead of immediately jumping to the defensive, get curious about why they're saying that to you.

December is the time of the season when investors seldom have to worry about stock market performance, particularly in years that come before a presidential election. "Trading in December is holiday-inspired and fueled by a buying bias throughout the month," Hirsch recently told subscribers. "However, the first part of the month tends to be weaker as tax-loss selling and yearend portfolio restructuring begins." December does even better for small-cap stocks, at least going back to 1979, delivering the year's second-highest monthly return. That small cap return is usually back end loaded, however, only starting around the middle of the month.

Opinion: The big question about the Israel-Hamas truce
  + stars: | 2023-11-26 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +16 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. And then it was back to war — a conflict in which some 8.5 million soldiers from all sides would ultimately die. The timing of the Israel-Hamas truce that took effect Friday had nothing to do with a holiday. But there is also the possibility that this truce won’t last much longer than the one in 1914. “The deal arguably strengthens Hamas, allowing it to claim credit, catch its breath and regroup,” wrote Frida Ghitis.

Scott won the first of his two Australian PGA Championship trophies 10 years ago in his prime and the second in 2019. Less than two months after winning the 2019 event, he broke a four-year victory drought on the U.S. PGA Tour by claiming the Genesis Invitational. "If I were to win this week or next week (at the Australian Open) it could be a springboard." The rival circuits, along with the European DP World Tour, announced plans in June to merge and end the sport's bitter divide. "There’s four or five other interested parties in investing in the PGA Tour like PIF," he added, referring to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

When Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott said the company would hire hundreds of OpenAI employees and match their current compensation, some Microsoft workers were furious. For existing Microsoft workers, 2023 was a year in which they feared for their jobs and their pay. In an open letter, nearly all of OpenAI's workforce said "Microsoft has assured us that there are positions for all OpenAI employees." Scott confirmed the offer in a post on X, writing that all OpenAI employees had "a role at Microsoft" and that the software giant would match their OpenAI compensation. However, the damage to morale among some Microsoft employees has already been done.

Then, as president, he created a national commission on mental health, which led to the passage of the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980, a major revamping of federal policy that sought to treat people with mental illness in their communities. Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott on Tuesday offered to match compensation for the hundreds of employees at OpenAI who are threatening to resign following Sam Altman's sudden ouster as CEO. "Know that if needed, you have a role at Microsoft that matches your compensation and advances our collective mission." But, the comment gives some clarity to what Microsoft is willing to pay employees and how many it would hire. Early Monday morning, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that Altman, Greg Brockman, who resigned as OpenAI's president, and their colleagues would join Microsoft as part of a new AI research group. More than 600 OpenAI employees then signed a letter to the company's board and threatened to join their former boss at Microsoft unless the members resigned.

Microsoft had no official say with the board when Altman, the company’s key contact, was fired. That is partly as a hedge for the fact it has no control over the start-up’s board. It involves the holy grail of OpenAI’s work: achieving artificial general intelligence, or A.G.I. Scott Syphax, a corporate governance expert, told DealBook that the deal could raise red flags with regulators if it threatens the nonprofit’s tax-exempt status. Another area Syphax is watching: the valuation that Microsoft placed on OpenAI after its investment and whether it acquired the I.P.

Napoleon, played by Academy Award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix, is a talented young officer whose military victories quickly vault him into influence and power. The fact that Napoleon can’t live up to his own larger-than-life image is part of what makes Napoleon larger than life. There are obvious differences between Trump and Napoleon — Trump avoided the draft and was not a successful general; Napoleon was never elected and conquered large parts of Europe; Trump’s coup attempt was unsuccessful. “Napoleon” suggests that our fascination with grotesque populist windbags is itself a source of their power. Napoleon might not love this movie, but he’d surely enjoy seeing his face blown up there on the big screen.

It’s time to admit that I underestimated Nikki Haley. If you wanted someone to attack Trump head-on with relish, Chris Christie was probably your guy. If you wanted someone with pre-Trump Republican politics but without much Trump-era baggage, Tim Scott seemed like the fresher face. But now Scott is gone, Christie has a modest New Hampshire constituency and not much else, and Haley is having her moment. To be clear, I do not think Haley has proved the DeSantis theory wrong.
