Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government bought Trans Mountain in 2018 for C$4.5 billion to rescue the expansion project, which has struggled with years of regulatory delay and massive cost overruns. A Reuters survey of five analysts and investors valued Trans Mountain between C$15 billion and C$25 billion, based on factors including projected earnings and oil shipping tolls. Trans Mountain Corp (TMC) CEO Dawn Farrell told local media last week the sale could wrap up by early 2025, just as Canada heads into a federal election. Trans Mountain offers strategic value as it is the only pipeline taking crude from Canada's oil patch to the Pacific, and on to Asian refining markets. "It's hard to imagine...that a pipeline like Trans Mountain would ever be built again," Poscente said.

Here's a look at what Exxon is getting in Pioneer and how Wall Street is reacting to the deal. Piper Sandler analyst Ryan Todd also pointed to Chevron as a company that could feel added pressure from Exxon's acquisition of Pioneer. Exxon's Denbury deal, for example, seeks to capitalize on a carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) company on the Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountain regions. What it means for Exxon's stock Piper Sandler's Todd maintained his overweight rating on Exxon on Wednesday and praised the Pioneer deal. However, Exxon's stock was down 3% in early trading Wednesday, while Pioneer rose just 1%, suggesting others are less sure.

Oil and gas tanks are seen at an oil warehouse at a port in Zhuhai, China October 22, 2018. Reuters' analysis of China's savings on oil purchases from the three sanctioned countries compares what Chinese importers would have paid by purchasing similar grades from non-sanctioned producers. For imports of Venezuelan oil, mostly heavy grade Merey, China saved an average of $10 a barrel versus comparable Colombian Castilla crude, the calculations based on the trader data showed. With January-September inflows of Venezuelan oil at around 430,000 bpd, according to the average of the Vortexa and Kpler data, China's savings from buying Venezuelan oil was $1.17 billion. European distillate inventories were 25 million barrels (-6% or -0.84 standard deviations) below the seasonal average at the end of September. Singapore distillate stocks averaged 3 million barrels (-23% or 1.30 standard deviations) below the seasonal average in September. (Reuters) - Gold prices edged down on Tuesday after clocking a sharp rise in the last session as risk sentiment improved and bond yields rebounded, while investors awaited the U.S. inflation data due later this week. Gold rose about 1.6% on Monday, its biggest one-day jump in five months, as military clashes between Israel and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas boosted demand for safe-haven investments. European stocks rebounded sharply on Tuesday as dovish comments from Fed policymakers and easing oil prices helped calm investor nerves. Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields rose to 4.7049%, decreasing the appeal for non-yielding bullion. Spot silver fell 0.8% to $21.72 per ounce, platinum slipped 0.3% to $883.97 and palladium dropped 0.8% to $1,130.52.

Because of the pandemic, my high school had gone virtual, so I was able to intern for about 20 hours a week. In 2020, OpenAI released its ChatGPT-3 beta, and I knew we could use it to make extracting and summarizing research data easier. My parents told me I should take the opportunity – the network alone would be worth it, so I took an absence from high school. I wanted to get a GED, but we compromised on me finishing my high school credits online, which I completed in June 2023.

Russian exports of gasoline and cross-border supplies of diesel by rail and road are still prohibited, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Monday. On Sept. 21 Russia temporarily banned most exports of gasoline and diesel to cope with a domestic market shortage, with pipeline operator Transneft (TRNF_p.MM) halting diesel shipments from Primorsk from Sept. 22. TASS news agency cited a spokesman for Transneft as saying that the oil pipeline monopoly had restarted diesel exports on Saturday. Of that, 3.5 million tons of gasoline and 6.6 million tons of diesel were exported by rail, according to the LSEG data. Since the ban was introduced, wholesale diesel prices on the local exchange have fallen by 21%, while gasoline prices are down 10%.

The widely followed energy analyst is often ahead of the curve, including in early 2020 when he warned that oil prices could dip negative. And if there's a recession, less economic activity should lead to even lower oil prices. However, higher oil prices would further weigh on demand from consumers and businesses, which raises the risk of causing — or worsening — a recession. Paul Sankey, Sankey Research (based on Bloomberg data)Although refining margins have downward momentum, Sankey said a long oil market drawdown isn't necessarily a foregone conclusion. Geopolitical tensions are an increasingly serious threat, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has recently warned, and a sudden conflict breakout could cause oil prices to surge.

In the last four years energy investors have dumped stocks in oil companies that boost capital spending, favoring higher returns over spending on costly, long-term new projects. But Exxon shares last month hit a record high of $120, lifted by returns on its oil, gas and refining businesses. 2 Permian shale oil producer, for $60 billion, signals it is ready to pay up for production after missing its own output targets in the Permian. A deal would bring Exxon to about 1.33 million barrels of oil and gas per day, the largest in the oilfield. It has good reserves, growing production, spending in check and debt at healthy levels, he said.

REUTERS/Ivan Alvarado/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 6 (Reuters) - The copper market will transition from supply-demand balance in 2023 to a major supply surplus next year, the International Copper Study Group (ICSG) said after its meeting in Lisbon this week. However, its assessment chimes with a copper market consensus that Chinese demand has surprised to the upside this year. It has trimmed only very slightly its 2024 global usage growth forecast from 2.8% to 2.7%. Operating constraints and smelter maintenance outages in Chile, Indonesia, Sweden and the United States will cap copper production outside of China this year. It's worth noting that the ICSG's most recent monthly bulletin suggests the global copper market notched up a hefty 215,000-metric ton production surplus in the first seven months of 2023.

The drop in gasoline prices could benefit consumers and cool inflation. Before this week's drop, gasoline prices had posted a 7.4% jump in the third quarter, riding increases in crude oil futures after production cuts from Saudi Arabia, Russia and other OPEC+ members. U.S. wholesale gasoline prices are tumbling, with percentage drops per gallon on Wednesday between 6.9% and 10.8%. A flurry of weak economic data took more wind out of the market. Crude futures settled an eye-popping $5 a barrel lower on Wednesday, and fell another $1.66 on Thursday.

The government said the lifting of restrictions applies to companies that supply at least 50% of the produced diesel fuel to the domestic market. Restrictions on railway diesel exports remain in place, with the exception on exports to some ex-Soviet states. A resumption of Russian diesel exports will have the biggest impact on Turkey and Brazil, Russia's two biggest buyers this year. Traders expect the lifting of the diesel ban could mean Asian diesel cargoes which would have replaced Russian exports in Africa and Turkey will now stay in the region, adding to already ample supplies. The diesel ban will have the biggest impact because Russia is the world's top seaborne exporter of the fuel, just ahead of the United States.

REUTERS/Yusuf Ahmad/File Photo - RC2DGT9XQ73M Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Global nickel production will outpace demand to the tune of 239,000 metric tons next year, according to the International Nickel Study Group (INSG). The cumulative forecast surplus of 566,000 metric tons over the three years is huge relative to the size of the nickel market. Global consumption this year is expected to come in at 3.2 million metric tons. The mining rush fed an 85% jump in production of intermediate products such as nickel pig iron (NPI) and nickel matte and a 20% rise in primary nickel products such as sulphate. But rising global production is also increasingly about China, which lifted its primary nickel production by 18% year-on-year in January-July.

As demand enters peak season, Xi’s ability to dictate how much Chinese oil companies export looks like the key swing factor. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsGlobally, demand for diesel and gasoil is around 28 million barrels per day (bpd), according to the International Energy Agency. Of the world’s 8 million bpd export flows, Russia exported on average 1 million bpd in the nine months to September, according to consultancy Vortexa. Even so, China last year overtook the United States as the world’s biggest refiner, with total refining capacity of 18.4 million bpd. That would limit Chinese exports to below 400,000 bpd, according to Vortexa, adding to tightness elsewhere.

Exxon's snapshot of operating profits, delivered in a securities filing after the market close, signals a good quarter for oil companies on high oil prices and strong demand for gasoline and diesel. Exxon's oil and gas production earnings were boosted by an about 30% increase in average crude oil prices during the period. The securities filing put oil and gas operating profits at between $5.2 billion and $6.7 billion, compared to last year's $12.4 billion in its third-quarter oil and gas business. In the U.S. and beyond, some are jumping ahead by targeting a new but also old source—closed mines, also known as brownfield sites. Southeast Asian countries are expected to be key demand drivers for the LNG market by 2030, industry watchers say. However, Europe's demand for LNG is expected to recede in a few years. Tony Regan, the Asia-Pacific gas lead from NexantECA, an energy and refining advisory, expects LNG demand from Europe to peak in 2027, before falling in 2030. "This is where I think all the action is actually going to be: Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia," said Regan. So that's going to create a strong pull on energy from Vietnam," said Regan.
