Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, appeared to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in people with Type 2 diabetes, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Another study, published in August, found that semaglutide appeared to cut the risk of dementia in people with Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer’s. The study found that patients prescribed semaglutide had a significantly lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease than those who had taken one of the seven other diabetes drugs. The biggest difference was seen when comparing patients who took semaglutide to those who took insulin: Semaglutide patients had a 70% lower risk of Alzheimer’s, the study found.

CNN —Beyoncé will appear alongside Vice President Kamala Harris at a rally Friday in Houston, a person familiar with the planning tells CNN, the first joint appearance with the music icon whose anthem has been the soundtrack of the Harris campaign. The appearance, in which Beyoncé will appear with Willie Nelson, is designed to be one of the biggest closing acts of the campaign. Beyoncé all but gave her endorsement to Harris months ago, giving her permission to use her song “Freedom” as her official campaign anthem, CNN first reported in July. At one point, rumors of Beyoncé appearing at the Democratic convention threatened to overtake Harris’ acceptance speech. During her remarks, the vice president is expected to warn of the threat a second Trump term poses to women’s reproductive freedom.

The number of manufacturing jobs has fallen 45 percent since the late 1990s, as factories have shuttered or moved to Mexico, China and elsewhere. Canton represents the kind of struggling manufacturing town that once churned out American products. They argue that the candidates’ proposals aren’t enough to reverse the trends — globalization, free trade agreements, automation and other technological changes — that caused manufacturing jobs to leave America in the first place. That helps explain why, despite Mr. Biden’s subsidies, the number of manufacturing jobs nationwide remains 34 percent lower than it was in the late 1970s. Modern manufacturing jobs also often require a postsecondary education.

He sat down with BI to talk about the race, the national debt, abortion, and the state of his party. In an era where college-educated voters have been bleeding out of the GOP, Schweikert is increasingly an outlier, and he knows it. In order to keep looking like his district, Schweikert — a one-time conservative rabble-rouser who rode his way into Congress during the 2010 Tea Party wave — has had to make some changes. But now that Schweikert's sharing the ballot with Trump, he's not sweating that either. Northwest Arkansas was last year ranked the 15th fastest-growing region in the country, and much of that population growth was driven by immigrant workers. “It’s a popular selling point to the base to say ‘I’m going to round up five million immigrants,’” said Mr. Quiñones, 35. The influx of immigrants into Northwest Arkansas has given rise to a thriving local ecosystem of businesses. Planning the local stops now can be as labor-intensive for campaign staff as putting on a full event, the sources said. The limitations on local stops is the new reality as both candidates race across battleground states in what polling has shown to be a contest that hangs within the margin of error. “In order to maintain operational security, the U.S. Secret Service does not discuss the specific means and methods used to conduct its protective operations. However, in this increased threat environment, the Secret Service is constantly adjusting our protective posture to ensure the highest levels of protection at all times and in all places,” U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Special Agent Matt Young said in a statement to NBC News. CNN —In the year and a half following the Supreme Court Dobbs decision that revoked the federal right to an abortion, hundreds more infants died than expected in the United States, new research shows. They found that infant mortality was higher than usual in the US in several months after the Dobbs decision and never dropped to rates that were lower than expected. In the months that infant mortality was higher than expected – October 2022, March 2023 and April 2023 – rates were about 7% higher than typical, leading to an average of 247 more infant deaths in each of those months. She was not involved in the new study, but does research abortion trends in the US. Abortion bans may affect access to and willingness to seek prenatal care and broader support systems, she said, and the barriers compound.

Religion is making a rare appearance on the campaign trail this week in a presidential election that has dwelled less on candidates’ personal faith than any in recent memory. Vice President Kamala Harris is planning to attend services and speak at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church outside Atlanta on Sunday, while her running mate, Minnesota Gov. And Harris and Trump, along with their running mates, have complicated religious backgrounds that are harder to “sell” politically than Biden’s familiar Catholicism, he said. “I grew up in the Black church,” Harris told radio host Charlamagne tha God last week when a pastor asked about partnering with faith communities. “If you are not comfortable talking about religion, it really shows, so it makes sense not to,” said Faggioli.
