Nvidia issued market-beating revenue guidance for its fiscal third quarter of $32.5 billion. Nvidia reported July quarter revenue on Wednesday of more than $30 billion, up 122% year on year. Nvidia shares fell on about 6% Thursday, as the company's fiscal second-quarter gross margin dipped slightly, and its revenue beat was eclipsed by a backdrop of increasingly lofty expectations. The pullback in the stock on Thursday also comes after a meteoric rally, with Nvidia's shares rising more than 150% this year to date. The company also announced a $50 billion stock buyback program.

AI researcher Anima Anandkumar highlights the role of AI in weather, climate, and medical design. She formerly worked at Nvidia on machine learning research and now spearheads Caltech's AI research. The former Nvidia senior director of AI research and Amazon Web Services alum spent decades working at the forefront of AI algorithms and helped make Nvidia's FourCastNet weather simulator available as open source. I see that as the golden age of open research where even in industry, you could open source, you could publish, you could freely collaborate. To me, my goal to be having a dual appointment was to really enable open research and do that for beneficial tasks.

Microsoft said June quarter capex rose more than 77% year-on-year to $19 billion. Koren and his firm do not own Nvidia stock. Analysts give Nvidia upside potential of 15.8% on average, according to FactSet data on Thursday. "Nvidia will still take the lion's share of, to our estimates, $700 billion of capex over the next two and a half years. So the outlook should still be strong for Nvidia," Wang told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Wednesday.

Slowing rate of change in earnings growth There are two important trends to follow in earnings. In the case of Nvidia, earnings are continuing to increase, but the rate of change is decelerating. This earnings report will likely be the final time in this stretch that Nvidia will see triple-digit earnings growth. But the impact has been shrinking – just as the overall Mag 7 impact has been diminishing with second quarter earnings growth broadening out. Last season (Q1), Nvidia was responsible for a little more than one-third of the S & P 500's 8% earnings growth.

Elon Musk announced his new company xAI which he says has the goal to understand the true nature of the universe. Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, is being accused by environmental and health advocates of adding to the pollution problem in Memphis, Tennessee, by using natural gas burning turbines at its new data center, and doing so without a permit. The letter notes that xAI "has installed at least 18 gas combustion turbines over the last several months (with more potentially on the way)." The company has been using the turbines to power the facility, but its long-term plan is to use power from the local utility, Memphis Light, Gas and Water and the Tennessee Valley Authority. MLGW told CNBC that it started providing 50 megawatts of power to xAI at the beginning of August.

Jim doesn't see a need to step in first thing Thursday morning and buy the dip. Through its Nvidia AI Enterprise service, Nvidia is in the process of building out a potentially massive software business. Quarterly commentary During Nvidia's fiscal second quarter, better-than-expected sales were driven by strength in all key segments, including a Data Center segment revenue record. Regarding China, Kress said, "Data Center revenue in China grew sequentially in Q2 and is a significant contributor to our Data Center revenue. Guidance Taking a closer look at guidance, Nvidia's fiscal third quarter may not have beaten the Street's estimates by the magnitude some were hoping for, but it's far from disappointing.

Its next-generation Blackwell chip faces delays, raising questions about supply-chain impacts. As Nvidia prepares to report its second-quarter earnings on Wednesday, some of those questions are still relevant, while some have faded away. Efforts by other companies to build competitive AI chips haven't reached more than a simmer, and the rollout of Nvidia's next-generation Blackwell chip is said to be delayed. The analysts also wrote that revenue from existing products, specifically the H200 and H20 AI chips, could offset any delayed revenue from the Blackwell chip. AdvertisementNvidia's chips are still a must for the most complex AI-computing jobs, as Amazon still purchases chips from Nvidia.

Microsoft 's first custom AI chip, Maia, wasn't announced until the end of 2023. But being first in AI chips hasn't translated to a top spot in the overall rat race of generative AI. Google TPUs still dominate among custom cloud AI accelerators, with 58% of the market share, according to The Futurum Group.

NVDA YTD mountain Nvidia Wall Street is bullish heading into Nvidia's earnings results next week, figuring any hiccups to its next generation AI chips does little to dim the earnings potential of a company that essentially has a monopoly on the market. Economists polled by FactSet anticipate PCE to show increases of 0.2% month on month and 2.6% from the year-earlier period. Wall Street anticipates that stocks could go higher from here, though the road from now to the end of the year could be bumpy. Wall Street traders think next week's earnings report from Nvidia is likely to give the chip stock another boost, according to one interpretation of options market pricing. A Piper Sandler research note on Thursday from Benson Durham and Melissa Turner said short-term options on Nvidia look expensive, but that high cost is tilted toward options that serve as bets the stock will rise. So, expensive NVDA options in general don't connote very much investor angst heading into the release," the Piper Sandler report said. The market optimism about Nvidia extends beyond the immediate period after the earnings report, according to Piper Sandler. The Piper Sandler researchers did not take a fundamental position on Nvidia's earnings report.

While expectations are high and caution is certainly warranted, we don't think it's quite that simple. While the Oscillator and Williams' work do point to possible selling pressure ahead, we don't want to get too bearish. However, we don't think the risks are so elevated as to warrant more than a small cash raise. We still view Nvidia as an "own it, don't trade it" stock, but we also don't keep our heads in the sand. Chinese technology giant Huawei is set to challenge Nvidia with a new artificial intelligence chip amid U.S. sanctions that had sought to curb the Chinese tech giant's technological progress, according to a Wall Street Journal report. U.S. regulators in 2022 had slapped restrictions on Nvidia to stop the firm from selling AI chips, including the H100, in China, citing national security concerns. Huawei has been at the center of U.S. sanctions aimed at securing U.S. networks and supply chains. Huawei was then placed on a U.S. trade blacklist in 2019, which banned U.S. firms from selling technology — including 5G chips — to the Chinese tech giant. In 2020, the U.S. tightened chip restrictions on Huawei, requiring foreign manufacturers using American chipmaking equipment to obtain a license to sell semiconductors to Huawei.

At the end of [the] 1980s, Japanese companies accounted for like 51% of the global semiconductor market. So by doing this ... one thing undercut Japanese semiconductor chip makers' competitiveness in the global market. Another thing [is] that [it] forced open [the] Japanese semiconductor market to foreign players, and this creates opportunity for the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan. And Japanese companies are trying to both develop their own capacity but also attract phone companies to establish fabs there. So by collaborating with international companies, Japanese companies can leverage their existing technology and manufacturing techniques to expand their global share as well.

Bank of America offered four reasons why investors are worrying too much about high AI spending. Investors can look forward to fresh catalysts ahead, such as Nvidia's upcoming Blackwell AI product, the bank said. Second, AI spending is focused on more than just creating new revenue streams. For instance, these expenditures help tech firms maintain social or e-commerce dominance, or protect their reign over the online search sector. "Concerns about the return on investment (ROI) on high AI capex is valid but premature and inconclusive in our view," the bank wrote.
