For the most part, the market has paid little attention, but this time the message seems to have hit home. Banks stocks have been weak, and even former leaders in industrials like Parker Hannifin have been down. Fewer than 50% of NYSE stocks are above their 200-day moving average. Energy stocks are up, but even they have been selling off in the last week, despite the rise of oil. "Rising interest rates have made commodities-related areas, from industrial metals to energy, interesting for the time being," Timmer noted.

On Friday's "Ask Halftime," traders answered questions from CNBC Pro subscribers about which stocks and exchange-traded funds to buy, hold or sell right now. NewEdge Wealth's Rob Sechan talks about why right now may not be the best time to enter new positions in Microsoft and Broadcom because he sees more downside to come before they go higher. Bryn Talkington of Requisite Capital Management recommended the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSPG) for exposure to energy names because it is more diversified than the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE ).

That appears to be pushing investors into an exchange-traded fund with some built-in cushion against higher rates. The fund buys and holds loans made by banks and other financial institutions, which often have floating interest rates. For comparison, the iShares 3-7 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEI) has a total return of about -0.2%. The Vanguard Total Corporate Bond ETF (VTC) has a total return of less than 1% year to date. If the Fed were to cut rates, the BKLN would likely underperform and see its payouts decrease.

A pedestrian carrying an umbrella walks near the Bank of England in the City of London, Britain, July 30, 2023. Investors had already rushed on Wednesday to reel in their bets on further UK rate rises after data showed UK inflation cooled surprisingly quickly in August. Against the euro , the pound was down 0.5% at 86.74 pence, having traded around 86.70 pence before the decision. "The MPC still refers to its flexibility to react should things change, but the chances are this could be the peak in this UK interest rate cycle." "However, there is a risk that the ‘lag effect’ on interest rate hikes means that today’s decision may not be felt for another 9 to 12 months."

A bearish head-and-shoulders pattern has formed in the S&P 500, Keller said in a recent interview with Insider. The S&P 500 is in a head-and-shoulders pattern and could soon fall to around 4,100. His early August warning that stocks will slide was correct, though the S&P 500 didn't give up as much of its summer rally as the chart guru predicted. Outside of technology, Keller likes stocks in the utilities and energy sectors — specifically those in the oilfield services industry. The recent rebound of utilities, a defensive stalwart, is another signal that more market downside is likely ahead, Keller said.

Goldman Sachs expects rates to hold steady again as inflation trends down and the labor market remains strong. But Raymond Bridges, the portfolio manager of the Bridges Capital ETF, an actively managed equity long-only fund, believes the overall macro outlook is still bearish. But regional banks continue to access this program every week, Bridges said. But just because he's bearish on the macro outlook doesn't mean he's not going to take advantage of short-term opportunities. His ETF, launched on May 11, is a mix of US equity-index ETFs, large-cap stocks, and cash or cash equivalents.

Growing solar panel installations and a smart play around interest rates are set to propel shares of Sunrun higher, according to Guggenheim. Analyst Joseph Osha reiterated his buy rating for the residential solar company in a note Thursday and raised his price target to $36 from $35. "We believe that RUN should be the best-performing of the residential solar developer stocks for this year and next," Osha wrote. Osha's upgrade comes even as Sunrun shares have plummeted almost 44% in 2023, underperforming even the Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) , which is down 26% during that time. "Our 9% outlook for RUN's MW installations is moderately above consensus."

Gas is rapidly approaching $6 in one state

In California, gas prices are rapidly approaching $6 a gallon. Nationally, gas prices remain well below the record of $5.02 set last June. Still, US gas prices climbed this week to $3.88 a gallon, the highest level of the entire year, according to AAA. Boosted by those two nations’ aggressive supply cuts, US oil prices climbed to as high as $93.74 a barrel on Tuesday. And this recent rise in gas prices is causing headaches for some in Washington.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Newly publicly traded company Arm Holdings is poised to be added to popular indexes such as the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, although inclusion in the S&P 500 is unlikely, analysts said. Shares of the British chip designer closed up 24.7% in their Nasdaq debut on Thursday, giving it a market value of $65 billion. “The Nasdaq 100 is the most likely widely followed index for the company to get added into,” said Todd Rosenbluth, Head of Research at VettaFi. However, inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 may take time for Arm shares. Inclusion of Arm shares in the S&P 500, which is the standard benchmark for the U.S. stock market, is far less certain, analysts said.

Miami-based ETF sponsor Defiance ETFs LLC launched the Defiance Nasdaq-100 Enhanced Option Income ETF on Thursday, the first ETF to use daily options income generation, the ETF sponsor said in a press release. The ETF seeks to tap into the dual popularity of short-dated options contracts and the heightened interest in ETFs that seek to generate income through a combination of selling options and investing in U.S. large cap stocks. Investors have also flocked to ETFs that look to generate income and reduce portfolio volatility by selling options against stocks. One such ETF - the JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI.P) - has grown its assets to about $29.5 billion from about $12.4 billion a year ago. Defiance ETFs is set to launch two other ETFs - the Defiance S&P 500 Enhanced Options Income ETF and Defiance R2000 Enhanced Options Income ETF , which will employ a similar strategy with exposure to the S&P 500 (.SPX) and the Russell 2000 Indexes (.RUT), respectively.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company licenses its processorIPO and tech enthusiasts are excited about the Arm Holdings Plc initial pubic offering, and with good reason: it's the first big tech IPO in more than two years. However, some investors who would like to get immediate exposure to the Arm IPO through ETFs may be disappointed. However, this particular IPO highlights several difficulties that even large companies like Arm have in acquiring a broader ownership base through ETFs. The first problem is that Arm is not a U.S. company, it's British — which generally would exclude it from the S&P indexes. Reuters GraphicsThe broader STOXX 600 (.STOXX) is up by 7% this year, meaning retailers are outperforming by the most on record. The snag is that this stellar run has been partly built on investors unwinding bearish bets, or short positions, on retail stocks, after last year's pessimism proved overdone. This means retail stocks might not see as many willing buyers as earlier this year. Jones expects retail stocks to fall in the second half of the year.
