"We hoped and prayed today would come," Liz Hirsh Naftali and Noa Naftali, Edan's great aunt and cousin, said in a statement, thanking Biden and the Qatari government for their work in getting Abigail released. Her siblings were already there, Noa Naftali said, and the family can provide "the love and support that they need after losing their parents." According to Noa Naftali, Abigail had been held captive in Gaza with neighbors also taken from the Kfar Aza kibbutz, where the toddler, her parents and her siblings lived. Biden said he expects Hamas to release other U.S. hostages as well, and that he wants the pause in the fighting to be extended as long as prisoners are being released. "We will not stop working until every hostage is returned to their loved ones," Biden said.

The Israeli Prime Minister's office confirmed that 17 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza were released on Sunday, including four-year-old Israeli-American Abigail Mor Edan. The Prime Minister's office said that 14 of the individuals were Israeli citizens, while the other three were foreign nationals. Fifty Hamas hostages are due to be freed over the four days under the terms of an agreement between Israel and Hamas. In the first two days of the temporary cease-fire, 24 hostages were released from Gaza in exchange for 39 Palestinian prisoners. There is a clause within the current Israel-Hamas agreement that would extend the military pause if Hamas agrees to release additional hostages beyond the initial 50.

Hamas has said that dozens of the around 240 hostages have been killed during Israel's Gaza counter-offensive. Some of the hostages are held by Palestinian groups other than Hamas, though it governs Gaza. But I think - and it's a very tough decision - but I think the children and women must be (first). The 50 recovered hostages would represent around half of women and children held. As part of the hostage deal, Israel agreed to allow more humanitarian aid, and some fuel, into the besieged Gaza Strip.

Families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza awoke on Wednesday to news of a deal that brought both hope and agony. Israel has said that about 240 people were taken hostage to Gaza, and it remained unclear which of them would be released under the cease-fire deal announced overnight. Hours after the deal was announced, families said they had received no official information from the Israeli authorities. At least 36 Israeli civilians ages 18 and under are being held in Gaza along with 13 of their mothers. People have been calling to congratulate the family since Tuesday night, Ms. Engel Lichi said on Wednesday morning.

The deal also involves the entry of hundreds of trucks carrying aid relief, medical supplies and fuel to all parts of Gaza, the Hamas statement said. Three Americans could be among the 50 women and children freed as part of the deal, senior US officials said. While the deal stipulates the release of at least 50 hostages it “incentivizes the release of everybody,” according to the official. “The hostages deal, as it is structured, includes a pause, a humanitarian pause over a number of days, four to five days at least. Soon after, two Israeli women, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, were also released.

NEW YORK (AP) — The latest honor for Salman Rushdie was a prize kept secret until minutes before he rose from his seat to accept it. On Tuesday night, the author received the first-ever Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award, presented by the Vaclav Havel Center on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Alaa Abdel-Fattah, the imprisoned Egyptian activist, was given the Disturbing the Peace Award to a Courageous Writer at Risk. Rushdie, 76, noted that last month he had received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, and now was getting a prize for disturbing the peace, leaving him wondering which side of “the fence” he was on. “He was inspirational to me as for many, many writers, and to receive an award in his name is a great honor,” Rushdie added.
