SINGAPORE — Singapore's headline inflation rate fell to 1.4% in October, down from September's figure of 2%, as the cost of cars dropped and rent prices rose at a slower pace. The consumer price index rise was also lower than the 1.8% that was expected among economists polled by Reuters. It marked the first time that Singapore's headline inflation rate fell below 2% since March 2021, when it came in at 1.3%. Singapore's core inflation rate, which strips out accommodation and private transport prices, came in at 2.1%, down from 2.8% in September and lower than the 2.5% expected in the Reuters poll. The Singapore dollar was trading at 1.34 against the U.S. dollar after the inflation reading, strengthening by 0.13%.

Every four years, the holiday season is a little more challenging for retailers as consumers get distracted by the selection of the next U.S. president. Citigroup analyst Paul Lejuez expects consumers will spend an average of 13% more this holiday season based on the findings of the bank's consumer survey. "Consumer wallets remain constrained, macro/geopolitical uncertainty persists and the shorter holiday season (five fewer days and Christmas on a Wednesday)," will weigh on spending, analyst Christopher Horvers said. Spanish retailer Mango is embarking on a bold expansion plan in the U.S. as it looks to shed its fast-fashion image and position itself as a premium brand. "We have also the opportunity to have bigger stores in the U.S.," he noted, adding Mango will open some multiline stores that feature men's and kids' items. Mango's sales grew more than 10% in the U.S. this year and the company expects to see double-digit growth again next year. The goal is part of a larger strategic plan at Mango focused on growing sales from about 3.1 billion euros annually to 4 billion euros by 2026. We also have 500 people taking care of the product from end to end," said Ruiz.

As Republicans on Capitol Hill lay the groundwork for extending the 2017 tax cuts, cracks are already emerging on one of the biggest questions: how to handle the cost. Extending the tax provisions is estimated to increase the deficit by $5 trillion, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Yet many lawmakers are quick to dismiss or explain away the number, arguing the tax cuts will ultimately help the economy and, subsequently, revenue for the government. Some top tax leaders, including Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, the incoming chair of the Senate Finance Committee, have downplayed the $5 trillion estimate, which assumes that the 2017 tax provisions set to expire at the end of 2025 have already done so. Yet a group of deficit hawks are worried about the ballooning deficit, and think any tax package needs to be fully offset.
