With the stock market melting down, investors are scrambling for safety and ways to generate income. Treasury yields have also been falling as investors fled to safety, with the 10-year dropping more than 10 basis points earlier in the session. The move down in Treasury yields has Collin Martin, fixed income strategist at Schwab Center for Financial Research, shifting his outlook. "This is really attractive, especially considering that we have seen Treasury yields plunge so much," Martin said. Money needed in 12 months or less should be in a money market, he said.

A sell-off in markets around the world turned into a rout on Monday as investors grew panicky about signs of a slowing American economy, with stocks tumbling across Asia. The declines were especially pronounced in Japan, where the Topix index, which includes companies that represent a broad swath of the country’s economy, fell 12.2 percent. The decline at one point triggered a “circuit breaker” mechanism that halts trading to let markets digest large fluctuations. The Nikkei 225 index, considered the benchmark in Japan, also fell 12.4 percent. South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index fell more than 10 percent, triggering its own halt in trading.

The economist and market strategist David Rosenberg took a lot of heat for predicting that the Federal Reserve’s big increase in interest rates would tip the U.S. economy into recession. “I spent most of the past year being absolutely beaten up,” he told me last week. “I had email from clients that you would not believe, and many cancellations.”The latest economic data, including a sharp slowdown in job growth in July, is indicating that Rosenberg may well have been right all along. I asked him if he feels vindicated. Stocks also slumped in Europe and were off to a bad start in the United States on Monday as I was finishing this newsletter.

Signs of a slowing U.S. economy sowed panic among investors on Monday, with a sell-off in markets that began last week turning into a global rout. The moves were a sharp reversal in major stock markets, which for much of the past year have risen to new heights, propelled by optimism about cooling inflation, solid labor markets and the promise of artificial intelligence technology. South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index fell more than 10 percent at one point. Japanese stocks have been on a tear for more than a year, fueled by a weak Japanese yen. Adding to the pressure, foreign investors have started selling off positions in Japanese stocks over the last few weeks.

As families shop for school supplies, how should they prepare for the spread of viruses and other diseases? Dr. Leana Wen: Historically, respiratory illnesses peak later in the year when the weather gets cooler. CNN: As families shop for school supplies, should they also pick up Covid tests or medications to treat respiratory illnesses? Despite using these and other preventive measures, it’s likely that kids will contract respiratory viruses many times during the school year. Which means adults would also do well to prepare for what happens if we get sick — and take preventive measures accordingly, too.

Technical signals suggest downside is limitedThere isn't much evidence that poor-performing areas of the market, like small-cap stocks, have peaked, Newton said. Meanwhile, Treasury yields have fallen in recent months as traders anticipate Fed rate cuts, which is typically bullish for stocks, he added. Advertisement"Thus, looking to buy dips makes sense technically," he said, adding that small-cap stocks looked "certainly appealing" after their recent slide. Fed rate cuts will mark a turning point in the marketThat's because rate cuts are expected to ease borrowing costs across several sectors. Boris Roessler | Picture Alliance | Getty ImagesLONDON — European stocks were set to open lower Friday, extending losses amid a global downturn as a busy week of market action draws to a close. Germany's DAX was on course to open 104 points lower at 17,984, according to IG data, with France's CAC 40 down 40 points at 7,325. The regional Stoxx 600 index on Thursday suffered its worst session since mid-June, pulled down by financials as French bank Societe Generale downgraded its outlook and the Bank of England cut interest rates for the first time since 2020. The central bank decision took its key interest rate to 5% from 5.25%, in a move that markets had not been fully convinced it would carry out. Asia-Pacific markets saw steep losses Friday, with Japan's benchmark indexes tanking as much as 5%.

A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on August 1, 2024 in New York City. U.S. stocks kicked off August sharply lower as fresh data prompted fears of a worsening economic outlook. The ISM manufacturing index, a barometer of factory activity in the U.S., came in at 46.8%, worse than expected and a signal of economic contraction. European stocks fell around 1.6% on Friday morning, tracking a slide on Wall Street. Job growth in the U.S. slowed much more than expected during July and the unemployment rate ticked higher, the Labor Department reported Friday. The unemployment rate edged higher to 4.3%, its highest since October 2021. "Temperatures might be hot around the country, but there's no summer heatwave for the job market," said Becky Frankiewicz, president of the Manpower Group employment agency. From a sector standpoint, health care again led in job creation, adding 55,000 to payrolls. The labor force also contracted by 214,000, though the participation rate as a share of the working-age population actually edged higher to 62.7%.

The U.K. stock market is likely to rise over the course of 12 months, if the Bank of England cuts interest rates on Thursday and history repeats itself, according to a CNBC Pro analysis. Economists say the forecasts for whether the U.K. central bank will either reduce or hold rates are a close call. A decision to lower interest rates — which sit at at 5.25% currently — would mark the first time monetary police has been eased in Britain since the hiking cycle began in December 2021. The analysis found that, on three occasions the index had risen more than 20% on average within a year after an interest rate cut. For instance, the domestically focused index of 250 stocks rose by 17% across three months after the Bank of England cut rates in 1998.

Shares of Nextracker dropped in extended trading Thursday as questions about the solar technology firm's backlog of projects overshadowed its better-than-expected quarterly results. Scrutiny of Nextracker's revenue backlog came more into focus during Nextracker's conference call with analysts. That, in turn, impacts the pace at which Nextracker's backlog becomes reported revenue. With interest rate cuts on the horizon, the economics of solar projects should get a whole lot better.
