Industrial technology company Trimble announced on Tuesday it would buy back up to $800 million worth of shares and add two directors to its board, just a few weeks after activist investor Jana Partners disclosed a stake in the company. Nersesian is the chairman and former CEO of Keysight , an equipment and software company. "We are thrilled to welcome Kara and Ron to our Board," Trimble CEO Rob Painter said in the release. Jana partner Kevin Galligan said the firm was "pleased" with the additions to the board and the expanded share buyback plan. Galligan also said that industrial concerns looking to grow their recurring revenue through software or technology might consider acquiring Trimble.

A fresh batch of earnings are set to come out next week, ranging from Big Tech companies to major pharmaceutical names, and analysts think some names could post stand-out results. Roughly 19% of S & P 500 companies are set to report next week, including megacap names such as Apple, Microsoft and Amazon. Thus far, about 22% of companies have reported earnings for the fourth quarter, with nearly 74% of those names surpassing expectations, FactSet data shows. Nearly 20 analysts have revised their quarterly earnings estimates upward. Other companies that have earnings momentum heading into next week include Hartford Financial Services and A. O. Smith Corporation , both of which have received roughly 20 earnings estimate revisions in the past three months.

The latest financial results and commentary from the world's biggest third-party chipmaker gave a big boost Thursday to Apple and semiconductor stocks, including artificial intelligence leader Nvidia . Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company , whose customers include the likes of Apple, Nvidia and fellow Club stock Broadcom , said its fourth-quarter revenue from smartphone chips grew a better-than-expected 27% on a quarterly basis. "Let's not overthink it: Apple and Nvidia are the two that are most obvious" beneficiaries from TSMC's results, Jim Cramer said Thursday. Previously, TSMC had said AI chips were on track to become a "low teens" percentage of its revenue. TSMC's results and guidance Thursday offer so-called "read-throughs" on its customers, many of which are Club stocks such as Apple, Nvidia and Broadcom.

CNN —Samsung’s next-generation flagship Galaxy S24 devices aim to take messaging, photos and games to the next level with artificial intelligence. At its annual Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, the company showed off its Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 smartphones, in what it says will usher in the next era of how people use their smartphones. The 6.2-inch Galaxy S24 ($799.99) and the 6.7-inch Galaxy S24+ ($999) are available in onyx black, marble gray, cobalt violet and amber yellow. Standing outAlthough AI on smartphones isn’t entirely new — Google’s latest Pixel 8 lineup launched in October 2023 with many AI features — Samsung’s scale could make more consumers aware of the possibilities. Money market funds were a hot item this year, but it may be time to think about shifting some of that cash into other investments. Investors flooded into the funds, bringing the total assets to $5.89 trillion for the week ending Dec. 13, according to the Investment Company Institute. The Crane 100 Money Fund Index currently has an annualized 7-day yield of 5.19%. Yet, if rates go down next year, as expected, the yields in short-term instruments such as money market funds and high-yield savings accounts will follow suit. During the Amazon Web Services cloud conference on Tuesday, Amazon unveiled upgraded AI chips, a new chatbot and an expanded partnership with Nvidia. Expanded Nvidia partnership Amazon on Tuesday outlined the details of its deepening partnership with semiconductor firm Nvidia – the global leader in the development of AI chips. Amazon's announcements involved not only Nvidia' bread-and-butter AI chips known as graphics processing units, or GPUs, but also its fast-growing – yet still underappreciated – software-and-service offerings. Artificial intelligence startup Hugging Face says it's seeing increased interest from potential customers following the chaos at rival OpenAI.
