It is unusual for the U.S. regulatory office to suspend research, and this suggests that investigators are concerned that potential violations of safety protocols occurred more broadly within the institute. Tokyo CNN —Japan’s Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision on Tuesday, ruling against a government agency that had barred a transgender employee from using the women’s bathroom, according to public broadcaster NHK. The decision was the top court’s first ruling involving the rights of sexual minorities in the workplace, NHK reported. The plaintiff is an employee in her 50s, working at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). In an email to CNN on Tuesday, METI said it was aware that there was a Supreme Court ruling Tuesday regarding the use of women’s bathrooms by a transgender METI employee. And under Japan’s Gender Identity Disorder Special Cases Act, enacted 20 years ago, transgender individuals must undergo invasive surgeries – including sterilization – to be legally recognized according to their gender identity.

CNN —Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors will now take effect after a federal appeals court lifted an injunction against the law. The appeals court granted a stay of a lower court injunction, which had been blocking enforcement of a part of the state’s ban. The ban prohibits health care providers from performing gender-affirming surgeries and administering hormones or puberty blockers to transgender minors, pending the duration of the appeal. In five states, providing gender-affirming care to minors is now a felony. The association says gender-affirming care creates “effective pathways to achieving lasting personal comfort with their gendered selves, in order to maximize their overall health, psychological well-being and self-fulfillment.”CLARIFICATION: This story has been updated to note that a part of the Tennessee ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors took effect on July 1.

COPENHAGEN, July 5 (Reuters) - A Danish court sentenced a 23-year-old man on Wednesday to indefinite psychiatric treatment at a secure facility for the killing of three people during a shooting spree in a Copenhagen shopping mall a year ago. The man killed two 17-year-olds and a 46-year-old man on July 3 last year when he opened fire at the Field's mall in the capital's southern outskirts. He has admitted to the shootings but said he was mentally ill at the time. "It was a day that affected many people, many of whom are sadly still struggling with physical and psychological scars," prosecutor Soren Harbo said outside the Copenhagen court. But it declared that he was mentally ill at the time of the shootings, which meant he was sentenced to undergo psychiatric treatment at a secure facility for an indefinite amount of time rather than a regular prison sentence.
