Here is a breakdown of how the aid crisis has deepened in the territory after 245 days of war. Crossing closures nearly halt all aidIsrael’s restrictions on land routes into Gaza meant aid was barely trickling into the strip. Aid workers say they can barely meet humanitarian demands on the ground. Israeli attacks on aid convoys have sparked fierce condemnation from rights groups, drawing attention to growing Western skepticism of Israel’s war in Gaza. The attacks “reveal fundamental flaws with the so-called deconfliction system, meant to protect aid workers,” according to the report.

The executives told The Times that the decision was mainly down to the labor required to stock books. AdvertisementCostco plans to stop selling books on a regular basis, largely because of how much labor it requires, four unidentified publishing executives told The New York Times. Walmart on Wednesday said it will offer new training programs and certifications to fill high-demand roles across its business, such as HVAC technicians, opticians and software engineers. The retail giant aims to retain market share gains, particularly in the grocery department, during a period of high inflation. Walmart also kicked off a $9 billion project to upgrade and modernize more than 1,400 of its stores, representing more than a quarter of the total Walmart stores across the country. The company's total annual compensation for the median employee was $27,642 in the most recent fiscal year, according to the company's 2024 proxy report. Those skilled trade jobs pay between $19 and $45 per hour, said Lo Stomski, the company's chief talent officer.

Dollar Tree said on Wednesday that it is considering a sale or spinoff of Family Dollar, which has struggled with its operation for years. There are about 8,000 Family Dollar stores, and Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar, said in March that it would close nearly 1,000 of them. In February, the U.S. Justice Department fined Family Dollar $41.7 million, the largest-ever financial criminal penalty in a food safety case, for distributing food, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics from a rat-infested warehouse. Rick Dreiling, chairman and chief executive of Dollar Tree, said in a statement on Wednesday that the “unique needs” of its discount store chains led the company to explore a sale of Family Dollar, which it bought in 2015 in an $8.5 billion deal. This is a developing story that will be updated.

In a blow to publishers and authors, Costco plans to stop selling books regularly at stores around the United States, four publishing executives who had been informed of the warehouse retailer’s plans said on Wednesday. Beginning in January 2025, the company will stop stocking books regularly, and will instead sell them only during the holiday shopping period, from September through December. Costco’s shift away from books came largely because of the labor required to stock books, the executives said. Copies have to be laid out by hand, rather than just rolled out on a pallet as other products often are at Costco. The constant turnaround of books — new ones come out every Tuesday and the ones that have not sold need to be returned — also created more work.

Online marketplace behemoth eBay said it plans to no longer accept American Express , citing what the company says are "unacceptably high fees" and that customers have other payment options to shop online. It's a notable blow to American Express, whose customers are often the most attractive among merchants and spend the most money per month on their cards. "After careful consideration, eBay has decided to no longer accept American Express globally effective Aug. 17 due to the unacceptably high fees American Express charges for processing credit card transactions," said eBay spokesman Scott Overland, in a statement. Overland said that eBay customers have become aware of new ways to pay for items, making payments more competitive than ever before, and AmEx was no longer a necessary partner for eBay. "We know that the vast majority of eBay customers are willing to use alternative payment options to continue enjoying buying and selling on our marketplace," Overland said.

The ALU originally eschewed major labor unions, establishing itself instead as an independent organization. In a warehouse off Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway in an industrial area outside Dallas, the future of American military ammunition production is coming online. Here, in the Pentagon’s first new major arms plant built since Russia invaded Ukraine, Turkish workers in orange hard hats are busy unpacking wood crates stenciled with the name Repkon, a defense company based in Istanbul, and assembling computer-controlled robots and lathes. The factory will soon turn out about 30,000 steel shells every month for the 155-millimeter howitzers that have become crucial to Kyiv’s war effort. Ukraine fired between 4,000 and 7,000 such shells daily for several months in 2023, according to NATO’s secretary-general, before infighting among House Republicans held up further funding for Pentagon arms shipments. Large shipments of American artillery ammunition resumed in April after Congress passed an aid package that included $61 billion to Ukraine.
