The Siamese crocodiles successfully hatched in five different nests in the Cardamom National Park in Cambodia, according to a statement from nature conservation charity Fauna & Flora Thursday. Siamese crocodiles are a freshwater species that can grow up to 4 meters (13.1 feet) in length. As part of these efforts, Siamese crocodiles are bred in captivity and then released into the wild, with 196 crocodiles successfully released since 2012. This suggests that long-term protection efforts are helping populations to start increasing again, said Flora & Fauna. “This discovery indicates that our conservation efforts have paid off, and I believe that with our ongoing conservation efforts, the population of Siamese crocodiles will continue to increase in the future,” said Chorn.

Scientists have uncovered a new source of hazardous "forever chemical" pollution: the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries found in most electric vehicles. Some lithium-ion battery technologies use a class of PFAS chemicals, or per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, that helps make batteries less flammable and conduct electricity. Scientists tested more than a dozen lithium-ion batteries used in EVs and consumer electronics like laptops, and found bis-FASIs at various concentrations. They can also leach into the environment from landfills, where the majority of lithium-ion batteries end up. AdvertisementThe study said only about 5% of lithium-ion batteries are recycled, and by 2040, there could be some 8 million tons of lithium-ion battery waste.

A prototype of an electric NASCAR race car sits on the lawn during the NASCAR Xfinity Series The Loop 110 at the Chicago Street Course on July 6, 2024. NASCAR on Saturday unveiled a prototype electric race car as part of a new initiative that aims to reduce the organization's emissions and electrify aspects of the sport. The vehicle's debut, in partnership with the electrification and automation company ABB, came one day before NASCAR's Chicago Street Race. The "ABB NASCAR EV Prototype," developed in collaboration with Chevrolet , Ford and Toyota , is an electrified stock car that can produce 1,000 kW (or 1341 horsepower) at peak power. Like most existing hybrid or full-electric vehicles, the race car has a regenerative braking system that converts kinetic energy from braking into electrical power.

Hotels are reducing how much food they waste at their breakfast buffets by installing AI-powered cameras above their kitchen trash cans. Of this, nearly 30% was wasted in the food service sector. Food loss in the supply chain and food waste generate almost five times the total greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation sector, per the UNEP. But, if NASCAR is known for anything, it’s the loud V8 internal combustion engines that power the race car. That’s why NASCAR wants to make it very clear that gasoline-burning race cars are in no immediate danger of extinction. ABB is also heavily involved in Formula E, the electric racing series affiliated with Formula 1. With many changes over the years, modern NASCAR race cars bear little resemblance to the Toyotas and Chevrolets that typical Americans own. This time, designers wanted to maintain that resemblance between the race car and the vehicles fans drive, which are, increasingly, SUVs.
