A new bifurcation in strong labor market"What we are experiencing now is a bit of a bifurcation of the labor market. Schelling says the 2024 job market for grads is strong, but focusing too much on degree attainment alone is a mistake. Some labor market experts see burdensome application requirements among the undercurrents roiling an already difficult job market for grads. In the end, he says a grad's job market's prospects will vary depending on where they are, what they are applying for, and what they want.

U.S. crude oil rose 1 % on Friday, topping $83 per barrel as consumer prices eased and inventories fall. The recent oil rally has stalled out with West Texas Intermediate largely flat this week, ahead 0.38%, after booking four-straight weeks of gains. There are also concerns about 78-year-old Republican nominee Donald Trump's fitness for office — registered voters are split on whether he still has the cognitive skills for this job. "I have a cognitive test every single day," he added, alluding to the requirements of his job. Trump continues to boast that he "aced" the basic cognitive tests he took over four years ago, when he was president. These cognitive tests only rule out disease. Doctors themselves have resisted mandatory cognitive tests for older physicians — in part because it's ageist, but also because memory tests don't tell you whether someone is good at their job.

What’s in Store for the 2024 Hurricane Season?

When Hurricane Beryl intensified into a Category 5 storm last week, it broke records and left a trail of damage across the Caribbean. The first named hurricane of the season, Beryl is the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, and also the first Category 4 hurricane to form in the Atlantic in the month of June — a portent of what experts say is a hurricane season that will be much more intense than usual. Hurricane season usually runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, with most storms developing between mid-August and mid-October. If you’re planning to travel during this hurricane season, here’s what you should know. How bad will hurricane season be this year?

But there's no denying that a large number of people, mostly women, found Joe Arden's voice to be exceedingly hot: smooth, insistent, husky, occasionally dropping to a seductive growl. Arden's voice made him one of the most popular romance audiobook narrators of his generation. Last year, a promising new romance author reached out to Blue Nose Audio and received a reply from Joe Arden. "My working name of 'Joe Arden,' has always been just that, a professional persona that labeled my career," he added. For good measure, they dug up Cronin's abandoned trademark application for the Joe Arden moniker, first filed in 2020.

When comparing personal wealth data with homeownership, a curious pattern emerges: Many states with high homeownership rates have lower income levels and vice versa. According to Federal Reserve data, West Virginia’s average personal income of $52,585 per capita is the second-lowest in the US. However, despite its relatively low personal income levels, it has the highest homeownership rate of all 50 states, at 77%, according to US census data. Mississippi—the only state with a lower average personal income than West Virginia—has the third-highest homeownership rate in the country. Even West Virginia, which counts three out of every four housing units in the state as owner-occupied, isn’t insulated, Sansalone said.

Al Sharpton told The New York Times of Harris' dual roles of supporting Biden while also proving her own ability to lead. U.S. crude oil prices fell for the third straight session on Tuesday, as Gulf Coast oil infrastructure appears to have avoided any substantial damage from Tropical Storm Beryl. On Monday, Beryl made landfall in Matagorda, Texas, as a Category 1 hurricane but later weakened into a tropical storm. Beryl has moved inland as a tropical depression and is now north of Shreveport, Louisiana, according to the National Hurricane Center. U.S. oil inventories fell by 12.2 million barrels for the week ended June 28, and gasoline stocks declined by 2.2 million barrels in a potential bullish sign for the market. Macquarie, however, is forecasting that oil inventories dropped by 1.2 million barrels last week, with the total balance "only modestly tighter than we had anticipated," according to a Monday note.

A view shows damage caused by Hurricane Beryl on Union Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, in this undated handout picture obtained by Reuters on July 5, 2024. Beryl hit Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane on Friday, then weakened to a tropical storm. The hurricane center forecasts it will hit as a strong Category 1 storm, but wrote "this could be conservative if Beryl stays over water longer" than expected. "People in southern Texas now need to really keep an eye on the progress of Beryl," Beven said. Yoshihiro Uchida, Peerless Judo Coach, Is Dead at 104

Yoshihiro Uchida, the longtime San Jose State University coach who helped establish judo as one of the most popular martial arts in America — and who was widely regarded as the best college judo coach in history — died on June 27 at his home in Saratoga, Calif. The son of Japanese immigrants, Uchida, who went by the nickname Yosh, began coaching judo at San Jose State in the 1940s, while he was still a student there. Americans had long incorporated elements of judo into other combat sports, and returning soldiers from the Pacific Theater brought a new level of interest in martial arts to the country. Uchida, who had been practicing judo since he was 10, despaired over the quality of the training available, especially at the higher levels. Working with a judo coach at the University of California, Berkeley, he established standards for competition, including weight classes, and in 1953 won approval from the Amateur Athletic Union.

According to major forecasts, it looks like it’s going to be an above-average hurricane season. An average Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms, including seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. In 2020, the May forecast was for 13 to 19 named storms, but an updated forecast for August was even higher, with 19 to 25 named storms. This region, from West Africa to Central America, is hotter this year than it was before the start of last year’s hurricane season, which produced 20 named storms. The possibility of a La Niña, combined with record sea surface temperatures this hurricane season, is expected to create a robust environment this year for storms to form and intensify.

Hurricane Beryl rapidly intensified from a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane in two days as it rushed toward the Caribbean this weekend, increasing its wind speed by 45 miles per hour daily. This quick escalation was a direct result of the above-average sea surface temperatures as well as a harbinger of what is to come this hurricane season. “This early-season storm activity is breaking records that were set in 1933 and 2005, two of the busiest Atlantic hurricane seasons on record,” said Philip Klotzbach, an expert in seasonal hurricane forecasts at Colorado State University. Last fall, a study in the journal Scientific Reports found that Atlantic hurricanes from 2001 to 2020 were twice as likely to grow from a weak storm into a hurricane of Category 3 or higher within 24 hours than they were from 1971 to 1990. The study added to a growing body of evidence that rapidly developing major hurricanes were becoming more likely.

CNN —Hurricane Beryl, a powerful Category 3 storm, is expected to slam into the Caribbean on Monday, endangering several island communities with life-threatening storm surge, violent winds and flash flooding. Beryl’s arrival marks an exceptionally early – and likely devastating – start to the Atlantic hurricane season. • Widespread tropical storm advisories: Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Martinique and Trinidad, the National Hurricane Center said. Less severe tropical storm watches are also in place in parts of the Dominican Republic and the southern coast of Haiti. The storm’s rapid intensification is very atypical this early into hurricane season, according to National Hurricane Center Director Mike Brennan.

This article is part of our Pets special section on scientists’ growing interest in our animal companions. Every dog has its day, and July 14, 2004, belonged to a boxer named Tasha. “And everything has kind of exploded since then,” said Elaine Ostrander, a canine genomics expert at the National Human Genome Research Institute, who was part of the research team. In the 20 years since, geneticists have fallen hard for our canine companions, sequencing thousands upon thousands of dogs, including pedigreed purebreds, mysterious mutts, highly trained working dogs, free-ranging village dogs and even ancient canine remains. (“I didn’t want to study dogs,” said Alexandra Horowitz, who has since become a prominent researcher in the field of canine cognition.)

Ever since scientists discovered influenza infecting American cows earlier this year, they have been puzzling over how it spreads from one animal to another. An experiment carried out in Kansas and Germany has shed some light on the mystery. Scientists failed to find evidence that the virus can spread as a respiratory infection. In an interview, Dr. Richt said that the results offered hope that the outbreak could be halted before the virus evolved into a form that could spread readily between humans. “I think this is good news that we can most likely control it easier than people thought,” Dr. Richt said.
