Hall so far is the only one of 19 defendants, including Trump, to plead guilty in Fulton County, Georgia’s conspiracy case, one of four criminal prosecutions that have ensnared the frontrunner for the Republican 2024 nomination. A live video of a court proceeding showed Hall pleaded guilty to five counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with the performance of election duties, a misdemeanor charge. Trump has denied wrongdoing and said the case is part of a political witch hunt. Trump has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty in those cases as well.

Scott Hall, one of 18 co-defendants of former President Donald Trump in the Georgia election interference case, pleaded guilty Friday to multiple criminal charges. Hall, a bail bondsman, is the first defendant in the case to plead guilty in the case. Hall, who pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor counts as part of a negotiated deal, will avoid spending time behind bars. Like all other defendants in the case, Hall had pleaded not guilty to the charges brought by Atlanta District Attorney Fani Willis. But earlier Friday, an attorney for Hall submitted a court filing waiving his indictment in the case.

New Mexico resident Ryan Martinez, 23, was taken into custody as the suspected shooter after leaving the event in a car, said Rio Arriba County sheriff's office Major Lorenzo Aguilar. A Hopi Native American man from Seattle, Washington, was shot, according to Peixinho. The county halted the reinstallation of 16th-century Spanish conquistador Juan de Onate's statue planned for Thursday after protests over the return of the bronze figure, removed three years ago during nationwide anti-racism demonstrations. The Santa Fe New Mexican showed a picture of a man at the protest it identified as Martinez wearing a red MAGA hat. Onate is known for the 1599 massacre of a pueblo tribe, leading a group of Spanish settlers into what is now New Mexico.

But there was "no such concern" in this case, they argued, " because months earlier Microsoft had archived all the e-mails in Fulton County Superior Court." Attorneys for Kenneth Chesebro, a pro-Trump lawyer, argued the search warrant used to obtain emails from his MSN email account ahead of his indictment "is defective" and the search and seizure of the emails was "illegal." Those two factors are "fatal to the search warrant," they argued. A spokesman for Fulton District Attorney Fani Willis, who is prosecuting Chesebro, Trump, and 17 others in the Georgia election case, declined to comment on the filings. Chesebro and Sidney Powell, another pro-Trump attorney charged in the case, were granted speedy trials.

Sept 17 (Reuters) - A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy has been shot and killed in what officials call an ambush while he was sitting in his patrol car outside a sheriff's station in the California city of Palmdale, in uniform and on duty. Sheriff Robert Luna called the incident that occurred on Saturday night "murder" and a "targeted attack" on Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, 30, because he was a police officer, serving his community about 55 miles (90 km) northeast of Los Angeles. Clinkunbroomer was found at the wheel of his patrol cruiser gravely wounded about 6 p.m. by a passerby who called for help, police said. During a late-night news conference, Luna asked the public to come forward with any video that may exist showing what happened. "It hurts, it hurts bad," Luna said.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Varshan Brown was charged with murder and taken to trial after sheriff's deputies fatally shot his cousin in a violent drug raid at Brown's southeast Georgia home. But jurors concluded the death of his cousin, Latoya James, wasn't Brown's fault. James was killed May 4, 2021, after deputies with a search warrant for drugs came to Brown's darkened home at about 5 a.m. Body camera video released prior to the trial showed deputies announcing themselves and then immediately forcing their way inside. Former President Donald Trump won't have his day in court in October a Georgia judge ruled Thursday, saying the high-profile defendant could sever his case from two co-defendants who want to move more quickly. Trial for two defendants – lawyers Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell – will go ahead as scheduled Oct. 23. Those two invoked their right to a speedy trial, but other defendants have not yet done so. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis argued in a filing Tuesday night to try all 19 defendants at once. Several of the defendants, including Chesebro, Powell, former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, want to be tried separately.

Former President Donald Trump will not head to trial next month alongside two of his co-defendants whose prosecutions in the sweeping Georgia election interference case were severed by a judge Thursday. But McAfee declined an effort by Chesebro and Powell to separate their cases from each other, meaning they are both set to head to the same trial on Oct. 23. The ruling is a blow to Georgia prosecutors who wanted to keep all 19 co-defendants together in the case. McAfee wrote in his order that severing Chesebro and Powell was "simply a procedural and logistical inevitability." "The Fulton County Courthouse simply contains no courtroom adequately large enough to hold all 19 defendants, their multiple attorneys and support staff, the sheriff's deputies, court personnel, and the State's prosecutorial team," McAfee wrote.

The preemptory step by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis comes after the grand jurors who returned the 41-count indictment against Trump and 18 others were subjected to harassment when their information was posted online. Willis wrote in a motion filed Wednesday that the grand jurors' information was posted “with the intent to harass and intimidate them." Political Cartoons View All 1146 ImagesLegal experts have said it's standard for indictments in Georgia to include the names of the grand jurors, in part because it provides defendants the opportunity to challenge the composition of the grand jury.
