SK Hynix said it swung to a 1.8 trillion won ($1.33 billion) third-quarter operating loss from a profit of 1.7 trillion won a year earlier. It was its fourth consecutive quarterly loss, but improved from a trough of a 3.4 trillion won loss in the first quarter and a 2.9 trillion won loss in the second quarter. SK Hynix was ahead of rivals in developing HBM3 chips and securing AI-chip leader Nvidia (NVDA.O) as a client.

New York CNN —In an unstable economic climate marked by geopolitical unrest, concerns about the Federal Reserve and soaring Treasury yields, investors are closely watching this week’s Big Tech earnings for clues about where the volatile stock market may head next. That means investors are watching their earnings particularly closely for prognostications about where the market is headed next. Big tech controls the market: Excluding Big Tech, the average earnings for S&P 500 companies would drop by 5% this quarter, according to Bloomberg Intelligence data. “Big Tech valuations pose risks for the broader markets, as Big Tech has contributed to almost all of the stock market’s year-to-date gains,” said David Bahnsen, chief investment officer of the Bahnsen Group. “This lack of market breadth suggests that investors are still highly prone to chasing momentum and getting overly excited about different market themes and stories, such as artificial intelligence.”It also suggests that there’s not a lot of room for any Big Tech earnings missteps.

TOKYO, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Kokusai Electric (6525.T) shares jumped 29% in their Tokyo market debut on Wednesday after private equity firm KKR sold shares in the chip equipment maker for $724 million in Japan's largest initial public offering (IPO) in five years. The stock opened at 2,116 yen and climbed to a high of 2,371 yen, valuing the company at 546.3 billion yen ($3.65 billion), as investors grabbed shares following the rare IPO of a key chip tool manufacturer. "The market for chip related stocks outside of AI is weak so some were wondering what would happen," said Tomoichiro Kubota, analyst at Matsui Securities. KKR agreed to buy Hitachi's (6501.T) electronic equipment unit in 2017 in a deal valuing the business at 257 billion yen ($1.72 billion) as the conglomerate streamlined operations. The private equity group then spun off Kokusai, which manufactures machines for depositing thin films on silicon wafers, the following year.

The new silicon includes Qualcomm's X Elite chip for PCs and laptops and the Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 for high-end Android phones. The speed at which a smartphone chip processes AI models could represent a new feature battleground between high-end Android phones from companies such as Asus, Sony and OnePlus versus Apple's iPhones, which are also getting new AI features on an annual basis. Now, Qualcomm said, its smartphone chip can handle the bigger AI models used in generative AI — as many as 10 billion parameters. That's still less than some of the biggest AI models, such as OpenAI's GPT3, which has about 175 billion parameters. Qualcomm executives said these kinds of AI models can run on devices if the chips are fast enough and equipped with enough memory.

Intel stock dropped 3% Monday after Reuters reported that Nvidia and AMD were working on Arm-based PC chips. Intel currently has the majority of the market for PC chips, with AMD coming in second. Intel's PC chips are based on the x86 instruction set. Chips that use the Arm-based instruction set, like those for smartphones, often use significantly less power, which is critical for battery-powered devices. Qualcomm has been working on its own Arm-based PC chips for years, although it has yet to gain significant sales traction.

Nvidia and AMD could sell PC chips as soon as 2025, one of the people familiar with the matter said. Nvidia and AMD would join Qualcomm (QCOM.O), which has been making Arm-based chips for laptops since 2016.
