A page from a copy of the First Folio Photo: PBSWho, pray tell, were John Heminges and Henry Condell ? Men responsible for “the most important secular book in the history of the Western world,” according to “Making Shakespeare: The First Folio.” A “Great Performances” presentation, it is concerned, though not overly, with the original publication of William Shakespeare ’s previously uncollected plays, now 400 years old and a near-accident of history. Making Shakespeare: The First Folio Friday, 9 p.m., PBSHeminges and Condell, actor colleagues of Shakespeare, took it upon themselves (with assistance, financial and otherwise, we are told, from bookseller Edward Blount ) to collect, transcribe and print Shakespeare’s 36 known plays in the few years after the playwright’s death in 1616; fewer than 20 had been printed previously (in quarto form—eight pages of text to a sheet, folded to make four leaves). Others were gathered by the pair from handwritten copies, scripts, notes, and often had to be compared with the few examples of Shakespeare’s own handwriting, which was, as one expert describes it, “a mess.”

David Holmes and Daniel Radcliffe Photo: HBO“The gift that keeps on taking” is how the inexplicably good-humored David Holmes describes his broken neck, suffered during the making of the “ Harry Potter ” films, on which he had served as principal stunt double for Daniel Radcliffe . Mr. Radcliffe, who is a major presence in and force behind the documentary “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived,” helps tell the story of Mr. Holmes’s journey from movie set to wheelchair, one that might have left a viewer a tear-stained wretch except for the camaraderie on display, and the enchantment of lifelong friendships. David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived Wednesday, 9 p.m., HBOAs Mr. Radcliffe tells us, he all but grew up with Mr. Holmes, who was just a few years older than the 11-year-old unknown selected to play Harry Potter—“the boy who lived,” as Potter fans well know—and who served as a mentor-hero for the admittedly unathletic actor. Much of what Harry did on screen—flying through the air, piloting broomsticks through Quidditch games, being hurled through walls by Nagini the giant snake—Mr. Holmes actually did, as a young man who was small for his age but prodigiously talented as a gymnast and gifted with the kind of physical genius envied by those of us who lack it.

Deep structural problems mean Europe is bound to trail most other big economic areas for years to come. The labour market remains tight and the world economy is rebounding, so external demand is also likely to be healthier. Fearing it will be difficult to hire in future, firms are now hanging onto workers, creating even more labour market tightness, potentially fuelling wage growth and weakening productivity. The potential growth rate for Europe's largest economy is now below 1%. European Union governments are meanwhile struggling to reach consensus on bigger questions that will help shape the future.

But what if I then told you that John also only has $50,000 cash in the bank whereas Jane has $2 million cash in the bank? Debt to equity The ratio compares the level of a company's debt on its sheet to the amount of equity. For example, if a company has assets worth $3 million and liabilities worth $1 million, shareholder equity equals $2 million ($3 million – $1 million) and debt to equity equals 0.5x ($1 million / $2 million). Debt service coverage ratio Since we just mentioned the importance of being able to service debt, let's consider a ratio that provides insight into that, the debt service coverage ratio. To do this, we use a metric such as operating income and compare it to the company's debt service requirement, meaning all principal and interest payments due in the next year.

He, along with other non-major-party candidates, has a real chance to affect the outcome of the 2024 election. Perot is a bit of an exception in that independent or third-party candidates usually fade as an election nears. George Wallace topped out at 21% in pre-election polling as a third-party candidate before picking up 14% when the votes were cast. Given all that, it’s no surprise we’re seeing other independent and third-party candidates jumping or potentially jumping into the 2024 race. Take Five: That rate cut trade

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Markets are keen to trade rate cuts and big central banks are pushing back, shining a new light on upcoming data in that tug of war. Traders, anticipating roughly three quarter-point Fed rate cuts next year, will now turn their attention to Tuesday's inflation data to confirm their view on the outlook. A sharper cooling could fan the peak rate talk, fuelled by October's employment report, which pointed to an easing in labor markets. Reuters Graphics Reuters Graphics3/ ONCE BITTENThe robust dollar suddenly appears vulnerable to the push and pull in the market's Fed rate cut bets. The data could also help justify, or challenge, recent remarks from BoE chief economist Huw Pill that mid-2024 could be the time for rate cuts.

LONDON (AP) — A lawsuit by Prince Harry, Elton John and five other public figures accusing a newspaper publisher of using private detectives and listening devices to illegally snoop on them should go to a full trial, a British judge ruled Friday. Judge Matthew Nicklin rejected a bid by the publisher of the Daily Mail to dismiss the case without trial, saying defense lawyers had not delivered a “knockout blow” to the claimants' case. Associated Newspapers strongly denies the allegations and asked the judge to throw out the case. No date has been set for the trial, where Prince Harry could give evidence. London CNN —Britain’s High Court ruled Friday that the Duke of Sussex’s court case against the publisher of the Daily Mail newspaper over alleged unlawful information gathering can continue. In the High Court ruling, Justice Nicklin said ANL failed to deliver a “knockout blow” to any of the claims brought by the claimants. “We intend to uncover the truth at trial and hold those responsible at Associated Newspapers fully accountable,” the statement continued. ANL said in a statement Friday that it continues to firmly deny the allegations brought against the firm. Marin Ireland Photo: IFC FilmsOne could never faultMary Shelley for a lack of imagination, just a lack of available technology: Her 1818 “Frankenstein” offers no pseudo-scientific explanation for its Creature’s reanimation, only some vague primal force harnessed by the book’s title character. It was the movies, beginning in 1931, that suggested electricity as a means of fusing humans out of spare parts. What is suggested by the remarkable “birth/rebirth” is how Shelley’s story—its mythos, at any rate—can itself be brought back to vibrant life, time after time, by torquing modern medicine into increasingly plausible horror. The Shelley blueprint—which locates the fear factor in every scientific leap that humans make as they inevitably play God—is always paved with good scientific intentions. Rose and Celie mean well.

The federal law at the heart of a major Supreme Court case that could determine the scope of gun rights in the United States deals with one of the country’s most vexing problems. “We don’t do it for the prosecutions,” said Jennifer Becker, the director of the National Center on Gun Violence in Relationships at the Battered Women’s Justice Project. But the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in June last year vastly expanded a person’s right to carry a gun in public and upended the standard for determining whether gun laws are constitutional. If the court overturns the federal law, the ruling is likely to reverberate across the country, legal experts say. Currently, 32 states and the District of Columbia all have similar laws that prevent people with domestic violence protection orders from having guns, according to Everytown for Gun Safety.

Euro zone recession fears harden
  + stars: | 2023-11-06 | by ( Jonathan Cable | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - The downturn in euro zone business activity accelerated last month as demand in the dominant services industry weakened further, a survey showed on Monday, suggesting there is a growing chance of a recession in the 20-country currency union. The economy contracted 0.1% in the third quarter, official data has shown, and Monday's final Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for October indicated the bloc entered the final quarter of 2023 on the back foot. Services activity in Germany, Europe's largest economy, slipped back into contraction in October amid persistent weakness in demand while in France it shrank again. In another bright spot, investor morale in the euro zone rose more than expected at the start of November, with expectations for the future at their rosiest since early this year, Sentix's index showed on Monday. Policymakers there, who have failed to get inflation to target, will likely take some cheer from easing price pressures shown in the PMI survey, as both the input and output prices indexes fell from their September readings.

Two Sigma, one of the world’s largest hedge funds, has long prided itself on two things: the sophisticated, in-house algorithms that power its trading, and its commitment to secrecy. But recent internal troubles have forced Two Sigma to air its dirty laundry. In October, it had more bad news: An employee had altered some trading models without the firm’s knowledge, affecting its returns and drawing regulatory scrutiny. It’s the kind of mess that any investment firm wants to avoid for fear of losing clients and talent, especially one that has avoided the spotlight for much of its 22 years of existence. In a 2015 profile of Two Sigma, Forbes magazine said the two founders were “obsessive about avoiding publicity and keeping the firm’s secrets under wraps.”
