It’s not unusual for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to have to respond to rumors surrounding any given natural disaster. This week, President Joe Biden requested a memorandum from his team on the federal government’s digital response, including how officials were remediating misinformation, a senior administration official told CNN. “The contours of this misinformation are unlike anything we’ve seen before,” a senior administration official told CNN. CNN previously reported that there were 30 midair near-collisions involving noncommercial flights in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene on Saturday, September 28. CNN —Long before the outer bands of Hurricane Milton lashed the Florida coast, a political battle over the massive storm was already raging. This time, partly because Trump pushed so hard to exploit last week’s Hurricane Helene for his political gain, the sparring has started early. A storm of this size could give Trump a political openingTrump has repeatedly shown there’s no situation he will not try to leverage for political gain. “I’ve had storms under both President Trump and President Biden, and I’ve worked well with both of them. Unlike Harris, Biden had kinder words for DeSantis, saying on Tuesday that the governor had been “cooperative.”“I said no, ‘You’re doing a great job, it’s all being done well, we thank you for it,’” Biden said.

Later Wednesday, the White House said Biden had spoken by phone with officials in Florida in advance of Hurricane Milton making landfall. Harris’ visible role on the storm response comes as Hurricane Helene and now Milton have become part of the 2024 campaign, with less than four weeks to go before Election Day. She’s been making statements on issues that don’t typically fall under the purview of her official role as vice president. Her campaign has been consumed in recent days by the latest hurricane as it is working to evacuate staff, pause voter outreach across Florida and keep an eye on potential early voting ramifications following Hurricane Helene in a battleground state like North Carolina. It’s looking like the storm of the century,” Biden said during the briefing.

Major infrastructure upgrades meant to protect Florida’s Tampa Bay area from flooding are months away from completion, as the vulnerable region braces for what could be the worst hurricane in more than a century, officials said. Hurricane Milton is expected to strike the Tampa area overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning with life-threatening storm surge of up to 15 feet, said Austen Flannery, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tampa office. Since then, the region’s population has grown from roughly 400,000 people to 3.8 million, and the number of buildings has either tripled or quadrupled, according to the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. The National Weather Service said Tuesday was the last full day for Florida residents to do so. “This is playing out to be one of our worst case scenarios for our area,” said Wren Krahl, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council's executive director.

In today’s edition, politics reporter Allan Smith looks at how Elon Musk could help (or hurt) Donald Trump on the campaign trail. Plus, national political correspondent Steve Kornacki breaks down the different paths to victory Kamala Harris and Trump are attempting to chart in Pennsylvania. The disparate images helped paint a picture of both the benefits and the detriments to having Musk in Trump’s corner. Musk’s appearance at Trump’s Pennsylvania rally over the weekend was the culmination of a yearslong rightward drift for the eccentric billionaire, expedited by his purchase of Twitter in 2022. After his appearance in western Pennsylvania, Musk started to offer people $47 if they successfully get a swing-state voter to sign onto a petition backing the First and Second Amendments.

As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Tampa Bay, some residents are saying that the resources needed to evacuate — especially gasoline — are in short supply, despite a mandate to leave the area. Debris from Helene also poses a risk as Milton approaches because the objects can turn into dangerous projectiles. On social media, lines stretching around the block could be seen at the few gas stations in the greater Tampa Bay area that still had fuel. Hurricane Helene had already damaged her family home and she assumes more, if not total damage, will be wrought by Milton. “What’s really sad is seeing people pulling up to gas stations and just staring at pumps that are out of gas,” she said.

Florida authorities issued dire warnings Tuesday to residents in Hurricane Milton's path, telling them "time is running out" to flee the potentially historic storm that's set make landfall in a day's time. The Category 4 hurricane, bordering on Category 5, was expected to reach Florida's Gulf Coast between 10 p.m Wednesday and 2 a.m. Thursday, according to the latest forecasts. "What everyone has been saying is, you have to evacuate, it is not survivable to survive a 10- to 15-foot storm surge," Alpert told NBC News on Tuesday. President Joe Biden has postponed his overseas trip this week due to Hurricane Milton, according to two sources familiar with the planning. Biden was scheduled to depart for Berlin on Thursday and then travel to Angola in Southern Africa, returning to the U.S. on Oct. 15. "Given the projected trajectory and strength of Hurricane Milton, President Biden is postponing his upcoming trip to Germany and Angola in order to oversee preparations for and the response to Hurricane Milton, in addition to the ongoing response to the impacts of Hurricane Helene across the Southeast," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. Residents there are still reeling from the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene last month. "You'll eventually have to schedule with the insurance company to actually review and inspect the damage." "Then you can call the insurance company, take pictures of the damage and [move] items into safer locations," Martin said. Make a log of damagesDuring your call, provide your insurance company with some initial details, like if your roof blew off or several windows broke, said Porter. Materials purchased to protect the home before the natural disaster — for example, plywood to cover windows — are oftentimes not covered. You also want to keep a record of receipts when you start working with contractors to rebuild from the damage, experts say.

As intensifying natural disasters threaten growing swaths of the country, assessing an area’s climate risk has become an essential part of shopping for a new home for many Americans. According to a recent Zillow survey, more than 4 out of 5 prospective homebuyers consider climate risks when they shop. Home shoppers can explore climate risk data on Zillow’s site through color-coded maps or on individual listings. The feature not only shows a home’s risks today, but it also estimates a home’s climate risks 15 years and 30 years into the future, which are the typical lengths of fixed mortgages. “Climate risks are now a critical factor in home-buying decisions,” Skylar Olsen, chief economist at Zillow, said in a statement.

Front-month US natural gas futures have dropped 8% over the last three days, from $2.97 to $2.74 per million British thermal units as of Tuesday morning. In a Tuesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Aaron Jagdfeld, CEO of generator company Generac , warned that the pressure on the power grid is only going to increase, burdened by a massive crop of new data centers and more severe weather. Although the U.S. is adding more solar and wind power, Jagdfeld noted that these sources are "intermittent by their nature," and the increased demand for technology like artificial intelligence and electric vehicles will continue to weigh on the grid. Another deadly storm, Milton, hit Category 5 status on Tuesday and is predicted to ravage Florida's Tampa Bay region on Wednesday. I mean, the air temperatures are warming, the water temperatures are warming," Jagdfeld said. "We can debate what caused it, but I think the reality of it is the, the outcome is more extreme weather."
