India's defence ministry did not respond to Reuters questions. The U.S. Congress in 2019 banned the Pentagon from buying or using drones and components made in China. India has set aside 1.6 billion rupees ($19.77 billion) for military modernisation in 2023-24, of which 75% is reserved for domestic industry. But the ban on Chinese parts has raised the cost of making military drones locally by forcing manufacturers to source components elsewhere, government and industry experts said. Sameer Joshi, founder of Bengaluru-based NewSpace Research and Technologies, a supplier of small drones for India's military, said 70% of goods in the supply chain were made in China.

Opinion | The Two Adverbs That Define Biden and Trump
  + stars: | 2023-08-08 | by ( Carlos Lozada | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
To say that America is a democracy is to issue a statement of belief. The contrast between Biden saying America is still a democracy and Trump vowing to make it great again is more than a quirk of speechwriting. Both candidates, now in a dead heat in the 2024 presidential race, look to the nation’s past but through divergent lenses. It’s the difference between America as an ideal worth preserving and an illusion worth summoning. The message of “still” is that we remain who we are, but that this condition is not immutable, that America as Biden envisions it exists somewhere between reality and possibility.

It's unclear how much Musk weighs, or if this fight is even going to happen. Elon Musk wants people to know he weighs 300 pounds and totally stands a chance against Mark Zuckerberg in a cage match. In the post, Krassenstein presented a "fight card" of the much-hyped Zuck vs. Musk fight. "I weigh at least 300 lbs," Musk replied, appearing to object to Krassenstein's characterization of his weight class. On Sunday, he announced that the Zuck vs. Musk cage match will be live-streamed on X, with all proceeds going to a charity for veterans.

California-based Karma Automotive sued Lordstown in 2020 for allegedly poaching its employees and stealing technology used in vehicle infotainment systems. CNN —As swaths of southern Europe continue to swelter under a deadly heat wave, for many outdoor workers, it’s turning into a brutal endurance test. “When it comes to protecting the health of outdoor workers during extreme heat events, there are really just three fundamental pieces — water, shade and rest,” Dahl told CNN last week. Yet some experts say many countries are far from prepared for dealing with extreme heat. Extreme heat also reveals a deep divide in the labor market, between those forced to be outside and those able to retreat to air-conditioned offices, the report added. Many workers in the global supply chain will be highly vulnerable to climate change impacts like heat, Parsons said.

CNN —The 2023 Women’s World Cup Championship begins this week in Australia and New Zealand, and will be, for all appearances, a victory lap for gender equality in sports. Additionally, not all the physiological evidence lines up in men’s favor when it comes to athletic performance. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the most popular sports worldwide are those that also most exaggerate underlying gender differences. Would the gap in athletic performance persist if girls truly had the same opportunities as boys to play at all levels? In 2023, as we enjoy the spectacle of mega-athletes like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, it’s time to rethink our stories about gender and athletic performance.

CNBC's Jim Cramer said he thinks tech giants Netflix and Tesla will be only temporarily dinged by their stocks' drops on Thursday and will rebound. He said Netflix is transforming its business model into a streaming service with a cheaper subscription plan that includes advertisements. According to Cramer, Netflix has shown that it can make more money with consumers using its ad-tier plan than its pricier traditional subscription. He said he thinks this plan will enable Netflix to raise its subscription prices while also making money on ads. Although the project is still in its infancy, Cramer thinks it will be a game-changer for Netflix's profitability.

Every year, more than a million people around the world run a marathon. For some, it will be one of many, but for others, it will be a highlight of their lives. If you’re drawn to the challenge and excitement of running a “26.2” this year (or sometime in the future), you’ve got work to do. Most marathoners train for about 16 weeks to prepare, which means starting now for a fall race. That means focusing on lower-effort miles where you can accomplish the “three Cs,” Mr. Fitzgerald said.

Isaac Herzog, the president of Israel, will meet President Biden on Tuesday before giving a joint address to Congress a day later. His visit highlights the endurance of Israel-U.S. ties but also underscores tensions between Mr. Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has not received an invitation to the White House since taking power again in Israel last year. But Mr. Herzog’s presence will also be a reminder of the absence of Mr. Netanyahu. Mr. Biden has pointedly refused to reward Mr. Netanyahu with an invitation to the White House since he returned to office in December at the helm of the most right-wing government in Israel’s history. Mr. Herzog’s invitation to Washington has angered some Democratic lawmakers, who say that Mr. Herzog is a proxy for Mr. Netanyahu and that they will boycott his address to protest Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians.

Why Americans are obsessed with peanut butter

Skippy was the leading peanut butter brand in the U.S. until 1980, a title that now belongs to Jif. Pond, that became the first brand to commercially develop peanut butter in 1920, sparking the way we eat peanut butter today. "We've launched certain innovations specifically in Asian markets to help enable that type of cooking use for peanut butter. Domestically, Americans eat an average of 4.25 pounds of peanut butter per capita, a figure that increased temporarily during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the National Peanut Board. As the family came together in the middle of the day, we saw that it introduced this love and affection for peanut butter to children who will hopefully carry that love and affection for peanut butter into [their] lifetime," he added.

Jack moved to Phoenix in 2021, chasing stories about the fast-growing American West. And this week, he filed a remarkable article about the withering heat wave currently scorching the Southwest. As the climate warms, forecasters say that dangerous levels of heat crank up earlier in the year, last longer — often well past Halloween — and lock America’s hottest big city in a sweltering straitjacket. “In triple-digit heat, monkey bars singe children’s hands, water bottles warp and seatbelts feel like hot irons. Neighborhoods feel like ghost towns at midday, with rumbling rooftop air-conditioners offering the only sign of life.”

Dr. Leana Wen: It’s important to distinguish between sports drinks and energy drinks. There are also energy drinks that are often, and unfortunately, confused with sports drinks. Those consuming energy drinks instead of sports drinks or water may become dehydrated. This could be because of confusion between sports drinks and energy drinks, so people should be careful to choose the beverage that’s appropriate for their purpose. And really distinguish between sports drinks that replenish electrolytes and fluids versus energy drinks.

July 11 (Reuters) - Europe's top human rights court ruled in favour of Olympic runner Caster Semenya on Tuesday, saying courts in Switzerland should give her a new chance to fight a requirement that female athletes with high natural testosterone take drugs to lower it. The ECHR ruled, by a slender majority of four votes to three, that Semenya's original appeal against World Athletics regulations had not been properly heard. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in 2019 that World Athletics' rules were necessary for fair female competition. At the time, Semenya said the rules were discriminatory, and contraceptive pills made her feel "constantly sick". Semenya won gold in the women's 800 metres at the 2016 Olympics and is also a three-time world champion in the distance.

Specifically, Belvoir Castle, a stately and splendid pile perched on a wooded hilltop in the English countryside with more than 356 rooms and soaring neo-Gothic towers and turrets. Downstairs, the castle tearoom hummed with tables of tourists sampling scones with jams from the Belvoir estate.
