One of the key players behind the campaign is 42-year-old Jesse Cohn, Paul Singer's right-hand man. Hedge fund Elliott Management has taken a multi-billion dollar stake in Salesforce, as the tech company deals with layoffs and a management shake-up. And Cohn, one of Elliott's chief agitators, has emerged as quarterback, announcing his respect for co-CEO Marc Benioff in a statement. "He said, 'Hey, let me talk to you,'" Knowles told BI in 2019. He had the files laid out on a conference-room table when the board met with Cohn in Elliott's New York office.
Another activist investor, Elliott Management, takes a big stake in Club holding Salesforce (CRM), according to media reports . Same upgrade for Club holding Advanced Micro Devices (AMD); PT increase to $85 from $70. Club holding Ford (F) will have to lower prices for Mustang Mach-E. Not much competition for F-150 Lightning EV pick-up. JPMorgan downgrades Levi Strauss (LEVI) to neutral from overweight (buy); cuts price target by $2 to $17 per share. Paul Singer, founder of Elliott Management, speaking at Delivering Alpha in New York on Sept. 13, 2016. Activist investor Elliott Management Corp has made a multi-billion dollar investment in cloud-based software firm Salesforce Inc, according to people familiar with the matter. It is unclear what Elliott, one of the world's most prominent activist investors, is pushing for at Salesforce. "We look forward to working constructively with Salesforce to realize the value befitting a company of its stature," Jesse Cohn, managing partner at Elliott told Reuters. It recently won a board seat at Pinterest Inc when the company added Elliott portfolio manager Marc Steinberg as a director.
Pressure from activist investors is mounting at Club holding Salesforce (CRM). Elliott's investment in Salesforce comes roughly three months after activist investor Starboard Value disclosed a position in the company. Moreover, Jim Cramer has said, at least two other investors with activist backgrounds, including Jeff Ubben , have taken a stake in Salesforce. If these high-profile investors thought Salesforce was irreparably damaged company, whose tech was at a competitive disadvantage, they may have looked elsewhere. Toshiba buyout heralds a big step back for Japan

MUMBAI, Jan 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The end of a long battle to wring some value from Toshiba (6502.T) is finally within reach. Such an outcome won’t encourage private equity firms, and big policy shifts underway may stifle the industry just as it hits a new high. Instead, after an accounting scandal in 2015, Toshiba came to epitomise Japan Inc’s pervasive value destruction. Japan typically outperforms private equity deals in other developed markets, partly because existing incentive structures for company bosses are so poor. The country’s private equity industry is only just finding its feet.

The number of aggressive investing campaigns led by firms such as Paul Singer’s Elliott Management and Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund Management swelled last year, including from a record arrival of rookie practitioners. It represents a 36% increase from 2021 and the busiest year since 2018, when there were 249. There were also 55 first-time activists last year, who initiated more than a third of the campaigns. If the result is no better than a coin flip, it gives shareholders and boards fresh reason to question an activist’s arrival. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
Investors have learned of a $10 million settlement Tiger Global made to a former female employee. Investors don't really need another reason to shy away from Tiger Global Management after a year of terrible performance. The employee who settled with Tiger alleged that Tiger fostered a type of bro culture, led by men who prevented women executives from getting equal opportunities inside the firm. "Prioritizing these values in our day-to-day interactions inside and outside of Tiger Global has been the glue that has underpinned our success for the past 21 years. We remain committed to driving continuous improvement across Tiger Global as we look towards the future."
His name was actually Sam Miele, and he worked for Santos raising money for his campaign, according to one GOP donor who contributed to Santos' campaign. In raising money for his campaign, Santos fed donors the same falsehoods he gave voters, campaign fundraisers and others say. "We were duped," said a Republican political strategist close to GOP donors and the leadership of the Republican Jewish Coalition. The RJC is considered the most prominent group of Jewish Republican donors, making gatherings such as the Hanukkah event key networking platforms for politicians. Vallone gave $17,900 in August between Santos' campaign, his leadership PAC and a joint fundraising committee, according to FEC records.
The issue is "more dangerous" for Europe than the United States, Koller told Reuters in an interview, as high duties have limited China's U.S. market share. Koller said Chinese EV makers can produce vehicles for less because they have lower research and development costs, lower levels of capital spending and lower labour costs than rivals in Europe. Forvia, the company created when French auto supplier Faurecia took 82% control of German supplier Hella, is the seventh largest automotive component maker in the world. By contrast, high duties in the United States on Chinese-made vehicles have so far kept China's share of the U.S. auto market negligible. Koller said Forvia will invest more in the United States, in part to take advantage of federal incentives provided in the Inflation Reduction Act signed into law in August.

For investors looking for a way to ride out the storm in one piece, here are where the biggest investors are hiding out. Emerging markets Bond King Gundlach said it's time to buy emerging market stocks as the dollar has likely hit its peak. Cash Cash, one of the most hated corners of the market for years, has gotten some newfound love as risk assets remain stuck in a rout. Buying safe government bonds allows investors to shop for riskier, more opportunistic credits in the market, Gundlach said. Spreads on non-Treasurys have widened, including guaranteed mortgages, junk bond yields, emerging market debt and asset back securities, he added.
Carl Icahn had a textbook strategy for the Nevada-based energy utility Southwest Gas Holdings. In August, Southwest Gas' board decided against a divestiture, and the sale of subsidiaries that Icahn had urged remains uncertain. "Shareholders don't want to hear it, but you really have great difficulty selling a company at a good price today," the widely followed activist investor Icahn told Insider. via CNBCBut, like Icahn in the case of Southwest Gas, participants in this new onslaught may find themselves confounded by an increasingly complex and fraught business environment. According to Lazard, 37% of activist campaigns this year were launched by first-timers, the highest proportion since the company started tracking these figures in 2015.
Dorsey condemned attacks on his former colleagues and laid out his thoughts for the future of social media. As CEO, Dorsey said he led Twitter to do the "wrong thing for the internet and society." When he co-founded Twitter in 2006, Dorsey's approach to content moderation was seen as pro-free speech and the company "had to be dragged" into content moderation, J.M. Berger, a researcher on extremism on social media like Twitter, told Insider. Dorsey, Musk, and representatives for Twitter did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

But even with a market downturn, activist investors' campaigns haven't been the cakewalk some might expect. Insider's Daniel Geiger, Rebecca Ungarino, and Casey Sullivan spoke to industry insiders — including famed activist investor Carl Icahn — about why the current landscape isn't as accepting as some might think to activist campaigns. But when the going gets tough, the tough get going, and a difficult market environment doesn't mean we'll see the number of campaigns decrease. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey addresses students during a town hall at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in New Delhi, India, November 12, 2018. Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey didn't mention Elon Musk by name. At the beginning of his post, Dorsey said he's come to believe in three principles. "The Twitter when I led it and the Twitter of today do not meet any of these principles," Dorsey wrote. Musk, who closed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in October, has rolled back many of the old moderation policies.

The major prize Bluebell has so far scored was at Danone, where it helped oust a chief executive. BlackRock has also not responded to Bluebell's request to shake up its board and review its environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) strategy. Even if Bluebell does not win concessions from BlackRock, it has at least bet on a company that has performed well in the past.
SoftBank's Vision Fund just experienced one of its most dismal years in its history. SoftBank's Vision Fund was once a power broker, having raised a jaw-dropping $100 billion in 2017, followed by plans to raise $108 billion for Vision Fund 2 in 2019 — two of the largest venture-investing vehicles ever established. But insiders are now questioning if it will ever regain influence, according to 11 ex-Vision Fund investors, former employees, VCs, and industry analysts who weighed in on the future of the Vision Fund. One ex-Vision Fund investor described Son, now taking the reins of Vision Fund 2, as someone who is "not a manager." Given its investing performance so far, the obvious question is what happens once Vision Fund 2 has reached full investment.

Nov 30 (Reuters) - John Curtius, a former partner at investment firm Tiger Global, is in talks with institutional investors to raise $1 billion for his new venture fund Cedar Investment Management, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. The fund will focus on investing in early stage enterprise software companies in the United States and Europe, the source added, requesting anonymity while discussing private matters. If closed, the fund will likely be one of the largest new funds raised by first-time fund managers amid a slowing venture capital market. Curtius joined Tiger from Elliott Management in 2017 and had been running enterprise software investment at the prolific tech investment firm that has $125 billion in asset under management. His portfolio of tech companies includes security software SentinelOne (S.N) and unicorns such as data infrastructure firm Databricks and cybersecurity company Snyk.
STOCKHOLM, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Philip Morris International (PMI) (PM.N) said on Monday it now owned a big enough stake in Swedish Match (SWMA.ST) to initiate a compulsory redemption of remaining shares in its Swedish peer and would take it off the stock market. Marlboro maker PMI in May launched a $16 billion takeover bid for the Swedish tobacco and nicotine products company. Buying Swedish Match, with its popular wet snuff "snus" products and tobacco-free nicotine "ZYN" pouches, will aid PMI in its stated ambition to move away from health-harming cigarettes and eventually become a smoke-free company.
