Assuming the Senate continues confirming pending nominees when it returns in November, the next president is poised to inherit the smallest number of judicial vacancies since when George H.W. 'Set their sights on getting judges confirmed'The amount of judicial vacancies at any one time is fluid and can rise or fall based on circumstances. During his four years in office, Trump appointed 234 federal judges, the second-highest amount by a one-term president. “If Trump is elected, the judiciary becomes the Trump judiciary,” said Maggie Jo Buchanan, managing director of Demand Justice. Some Republicans believe that tradition will continue in the coming years, which could limit the amount of judicial vacancies the next president is able to fill.

The mass attack at Winder’s Apalachee High School was at least the year’s 45th school shooting in America. It typically gets 500 in a year, according to an academic study that claims it’s one of the first to quantify more than 1,000 threats of school violence over four academic years. Emily Elconin/Getty ImagesNo agency or group tracks all threats of US school violence, from possible gun attacks to bombings to any other conceivable danger. Atlanta Public Schools hadn’t warned caregivers so broadly of possible danger like this in at least a year, he said. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office sent 11 motor and K-9 units to help that day, it later told CNN; the Atlanta Police Department deferred CNN’s questions to Atlanta Public Schools.

You may have noticed how desperate some politicians' fundraising appeals can sound. AdvertisementIf you're a person who's at all involved in politics, from the most seasoned operative to the casual observer, you're undoubtedly familiar — and perhaps a bit annoyed — with the desperate fundraising appeals uttered in the voice of politicians. AdvertisementWe weren’t quite able to reach our most recent re-election campaign fundraising goal. If the candidate is inspiring to voters on their own, there's less need to scare people into sending them money. "There's an assumption that the more desperate the appeals become the better the fundraising works," Pennington said.

A Black teacher and musician told a federal court Thursday that members of a white nationalist hate group punched, kicked and beat him with metal shields during a march through downtown Boston two years ago. Charles Murrell III, of Boston, was in federal court Thursday to testify in his lawsuit asking for an undisclosed amount of money from the group’s leader, Thomas Rousseau. “I thought I was going to die,” Murrell said, according to The Boston Globe. The newspaper said that U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani last year found the group and Rousseau, of Grapevine, Texas, liable for the attack after Rousseau didn’t respond to a civil lawsuit Murrell filed. The march in Boston by about 100 members of the Texas-based Patriot Front was one of its so-called flash demonstrations it holds around the country.

Researchers have now used DNA analysis to uncover just how long ants have been farming fungi, now described in a study published Thursday in the journal Science. To trace the evolution of this relationship between ants and fungi, Schultz and his colleagues built complex family trees. Using the DNA from 475 species of fungi, including 288 species known to be cultivated by ants, the researchers pieced together how all these organisms are related. The study team did the same thing for 276 species of ants, including 208 species of fungus farmers. Ants began farming fungi 66 million years ago after an asteroid hit Earth, according to a new study.

Ukraine's F-16 pilots have had to get up to speed on a different fighter jet quickly. And more broadly, Ukraine's air force is having to rapidly undergo a wider transition that its international partners took significantly longer to do. Those older jets have hydraulic systems, while F-16 jets are fly-by-wire, which means computers process the input by pilots.
