Target is the latest retailer to put generative artificial intelligence tools in the hands of its workers, with the goal of improving the in-store experience for employees and shoppers. On Thursday, the retailer said it had built a chatbot, called Store Companion, that would appear as an app on a store worker’s hand-held device. The idea is to give workers “confidence to serve our guests,” Brett Craig, Target’s chief information officer, said in an interview. Target is testing the device in 400 stores and plans to make the app available to most workers across its nearly 2,000 locations by August. As the retail industry experiments with generative A.I., some see its potential to eventually make in-store shopping feel more like online shopping, said Roy Singh, the global head of Bain & Co’s advanced analytics practice who works with retailers on generative A.I.

People who work for an Elon Musk company have an opportunity to do something uncommon in business. Some recently sued Musk over claims that he's funneling AI talent to xAI instead of Tesla. He said earlier this year he was "uncomfortable" expanding Tesla's AI and robotics capabilities without additional voting control. Related storiesThe carmaker's CEO also recently diverted prized chips necessary for AI work that was headed for Tesla to xAI, CNBC reported. Most of the xAI employees who formerly worked at Tesla started working at the startup immediately after Tesla enacted mass layoffs earlier this year.

Apple's scale and specificity of vision also make it the first Big Tech company to get AI integration right. The fact that people are disappointed in Apple says more about the hype around AI's capabilities than it does about Apple. In that way, Apple's cautious approach may be a service for the rest of the tech industry. By slowly acclimatizing its constellation of users to AI that makes their lives better instead of frustrating them, Apple makes the tech feel like a natural upgrade instead of an unreliable, scary intrusion. Apple's new AI is made in Google data centers

But Apple and Google had for months been working together behind the scenes, with Google giving Apple access to its data centers to train the iPhone maker's new AI models. For years, Apple has leaned on Google and Amazon's cloud services to store data for its products. For example, when Apple device users do iCloud backups they are often stored in Google's data centers. Most of the impressive features of AI models must be at least partly handled in massive energy-sucking data centers, which companies such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon have spent years building. Bloomberg previously reported that Google and Apple were also in talks to bring Google's Gemini AI to iOS devices.

This week, the pope is due to make an historic intervention in the debate around AI at the G7 summit in southern Italy’s Puglia region. AI, the pope believes, can make the world a better place only if it serves the “common good” and does not increase inequalities. European Union lawmakers have already passed a law regulating AI, while a bipartisan group of US senators have set out plans for AI regulation that could lead to federal legislation. “AI and emerging technologies are on Pope Francis’ radar screen,” Larrey, now a professor of philsophy at Boston College, told CNN. It’s clear that Francis sees AI as part of what he called the “epochal change” taking place at the beginning of the 21st century.

Last year, Musk debuted his own AI startup and OpenAI competitor, xAI, which last month announced a $6 billion Series B funding round.
