[1/5] Soccer Football - Champions League - Group D - FC Salzburg v Inter Milan - Red Bull Arena Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria - November 8, 2023 Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez scores their first goal from the penalty spot REUTERS/Leonhard Foeger Acquire Licensing RightsSALZBURG, Austria, Nov 8 (Reuters) - A late penalty by Lautaro Martinez helped Inter Milan book their spot in the Champions League last 16 with a 1-0 win at Salzburg on Wednesday, dashing the Austrian champions' knockout stage hopes with two games remaining. Substitute Martinez sealed the win for Inter from the spot five minutes from fulltime after Simone Inzaghi's men were awarded a penalty for a handball. Salzburg, who would have kept their last-16 qualifying chances alive with a draw, are third with three points. Martinez, who has scored 12 goals in 11 Serie A games this season, eventually gave Inter the lead, minutes after hitting the bar with an earlier chance. Inter, who last season reached the final and enjoyed their most successful Champions League campaign since lifting the trophy in 2010 under Jose Mourinho, edged Salzburg 2-1 in the reverse fixture last month.

Instead, four years on from its Premier League debut, the technology has now seemingly become the main talking point rather than the football itself. Chelsea's win over Tottenham involved a number of huge VAR decisions. Henry Nicholls/AFP/Getty ImagesBeing magnanimous about refereeing decisions isn’t a trait many Premier League managers seemingly possess. “The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better,” the statement read. Whatever the Premier League and PGMOL had in mind for VAR’s development, it surely wasn’t this.

Arsenal cruise to 2-0 win against Sevilla

LONDON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Arsenal returned to winning ways with a routine 2-0 defeat of Sevilla to take a big step towards qualification for the Champions League knockout rounds on Wednesday. Europa League champions Sevilla were desperately disappointing and managed only one shot on target, with the last kick of the game, as their last-16 hopes receded. Lens and PSV have five points while winless Sevilla are bottom with two points. Arsenal got their wish as the technology that caused Arteta's angst at Newcastle was redundant and Sevilla offered virtually nothing to cause alarm. "We knew we had to get three points and we did it," Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice said.

"I think first we played very good until the red card. The red card changed everything. Rashford's red card was given after he planted his foot on the ankle of Elias Jelert to protect the ball and it drew the ire of Ten Hag. The loss was United's first in the Champions League in which they led by two or more goals. Ten Hag said the Rashford red was not the first questionable decision that has gone against them this season.

CNN —Everyone wants a piece of Erling Haaland at the moment and that sentiment seems to extend to Manchester City’s opposition. At halftime of City’s 3-0 win against Young Boys in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday, Haaland was asked for his shirt by opposition captain Mohamed Ali Camara. When asked about the incident during his post-match press conference, Young Boys manager Raphael Wicky said he was “surprised.”“I didn’t see that. Haaland, 23, has now scored 39 goals in just 34 Champions League appearances and already sits 20th in the all-time scoring list. MADRID, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Brahim Diaz, Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo scored as Real Madrid cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League with two group games remaining after a 3-0 victory over Portuguese side Braga on Wednesday. Nov 8 (Reuters) - Real Sociedad edged closer to a place in the knockout stage of the Champions League with a comfortable 3-1 win over Benfica in Group D on Wednesday which ended the Portuguese side's faint hopes of reaching the last 16. It was Sociedad's third consecutive Champions League win but their first at home in 20 years as they provisionally took top spot in Group D on 10 points with two games remaining. Real Sociedad and Inter will qualify for the last 16 if the Italian side beat the Austrian team later on Wednesday. The match was stopped briefly halfway through the second half after flares were thrown by Benfica supporters. Earlier on Wednesday, three fans were arrested after violent clashes between supporters of both teams, the Basque Country police confirmed.

Speaking ahead of his side's Champions League home clash against Sevilla, the Spaniard said he would do the same again. "The game was conditioned by the decisions that were made and it was my duty to be defending my players, supporting my players, supporting my club, defending my people in the best possible way. Arsenal issued a statement on Monday defending Arteta and said the club "deserved better", adding that the officiating body, the PGMOL, urgently needed to address the standard of officiating. Reviewing refereeing decisions has come a long – and increasingly unloved – way from the VAR (video assistant referee) project first trialed by FIFA in 2016. Two days earlier, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta lashed out at “an absolute disgrace” to allow Newcastle a decisive goal after a triple-layered VAR review. “Significant human error,” the league officials' group acknowledged after Tottenham's 2-1 win that is still title-chasing Liverpool's only loss in the league. Former Australia coach Postecoglou said he is traditional and prefers soccer without VAR, where all accept occasional mistakes and respect the referee. “You can’t tell me referees are in control of games,” Postecoglou said Monday.

That result cost Real their place at the top of the table, with Girona moving two points ahead, and although Bellingham finished the game he was doubtful for the Braga tie. "It would be important, at this stage of the season, to finish the group stage in four games," Ancelotti said. "If Puyol wants to talk to Vinicius, let him talk," Ancelotti said. Ancelotti's side took a 2-0 lead at Braga but the home team pulled one back in the 63rd minute to make for a nervous ending.
