Barcelona ending apartment rentals by foreign tourists
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
The city’s leftist mayor, Jaume Collboni, said that by November 2028, Barcelona will scrap the licenses of the 10,101 apartments currently approved as short-term rentals. The boom in short-term rentals in Barcelona, Spain’s most visited city by foreign tourists, means some residents cannot afford an apartment after rents rose 68% in the past 10 years and the cost of buying a house rose by 38%, Collboni said. Local governments have announced restrictions on short-term rentals in places such as Spain’s Canary Islands, Lisbon and Berlin in the past decade. Vacation rentals platform Airbnb, which hosts a significant number of Barcelona listings, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Collboni is making a mistake that will lead to (higher) poverty and unemployment,” Barcelona’s tourist apartments association APARTUR said in a statement, adding the ban would trigger a rise in illegal tourist apartments.

Richard Hatch was searching the card catalog of the Sterling Memorial Library at Yale, hunting for intriguing titles under the subject heading “Magic.” It was 1979, and Hatch was a young graduate student in physics, but he’d long nurtured an amateur’s passion for the conjuring arts and, on this day at least, he preferred to read about sleight of hand than quantum mechanics. His rummaging stopped when he spotted a title called “Die Juden in der Zauberkunst.” Hatch had spent four years of his youth in Germany so he translated it instantly: “Jews in Magic.” The card said the book was written by someone named Guenther Dammann and published in Berlin in 1933. A book about Jews in magic, from Germany, in the very year that the Nazis assumed power and started burning “un-German” books in bonfires across the country. It seemed obvious. This was an antisemitic tract, identifying Jews to make it easier for the government to persecute them and the public to shun them.

EU and China set for talks on planned electric vehicle tariffs
  + stars: | 2024-06-23 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
The EU and China have reportedly agreed to start talks on the planned imposition of tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck said he had been informed by EU commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis that there would be concrete negotiations on tariffs with China. The minister had said earlier on Saturday that the European Union's door was open for discussions regarding EU tariffs on Chinese exports. Proposed EU tariffs on Chinese goods are not a "punishment", Habeck told Chinese officials earlier in Beijing. Proposed EU duties on Chinese-made EVs would hurt both sides, Zheng added.

CNN —Teenage soccer sensation Arda Güler, 19, produced a moment of magic to help Turkey beat Georgia 3-1 in an entertaining Group F game at Euro 2024 on Tuesday. The 65th-minute strike sparked frenzied scenes inside the Signal Iduna Park, with thousands of Turkey fans celebrating arguably the goal of the tournament so far. It was a devastating blow for Georgia, though, which is making its debut at a major soccer tournament. Despite being the lowest ranked team at Euro 2024, its players can count themselves unlucky having pushed Turkey all the way in its opening group stage match. Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas lost her challenge against the Court of Arbitration of Sport in Switzerland — the world’s top court in matters of sporting fairness — to overturn the rules of World Aquatics that prevent transgender women from competing in women’s divisions. The ruling excludes transgender women who underwent male puberty, like Thomas, from participating in women’s races. By 2021, Thomas met the NCAA hormone therapy requirements to swim on Penn’s women’s team and did so for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. Thomas called the CAS decision “deeply disappointing” in a statement from her legal team, according to Athlete Ally. Last year, the governing bodies for track and field as well as cycling ruled that transgender women could not compete in women’s events.

Thomas, 25, had in January filed legal paperwork against World Aquatics, swimming’s governing body based in Switzerland, for its policy that restricts transgender athletes from competing in most elite women’s aquatics competitions. It also said national federations don’t have the authority to modify the application of a world governing body’s rules. Rich von Biberstein/Icon Sportswire/AP/FileA few months later World Aquatics ratified its updated gender policy, which went into effect in March 2023, according to the 24-page arbitral award. USA Swimming is the national governing body for swimmers and a member of World Aquatics. What a shock then – and coming days after the 80th anniversary of D-Day - that many German first-timers threw their votes disproportionally behind the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Paul HockenosWhat a shock then – and coming days after the 80th anniversary of D-Day — that many German first-timers threw their votes disproportionally behind the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. A full 95% of German AfD voters said Germany should limit the flow of foreigners and refugees into Germany. Not exactly the credentials of a party you would think would appeal to the next generation of German voters. But they must vent this pique constructively, as the extreme right has no answers to these problems (which, oddly, I’ve heard hard right voters say they recognize.)

The right-wing Alternative for Germany party won a record number of votes in European Union elections on Sunday, in a sharp rebuke to Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s governing three-party coalition in Germany and a sign of the rightward political shift across the continent. The party, known as AfD, captured 16 percent of the vote, placing second behind Germany’s conservative Christian Democrats, which won 30 percent. It was AfD’s strongest showing in a nationwide election, and it came as Mr. Scholz’s coalition has reached record-low levels of popularity in the country, according to polls.
