Maryanne Trump Barry, a former federal judge who was an older sister of Donald J. Trump and served as both his protector and critic throughout their lives, has died. Ms. Barry died at her home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, according to two people familiar with the matter. Ms. Barry, the widow of John Barry, a veteran trial and appellate lawyer, had been a federal judge in New Jersey, a position that Mr. Trump’s fixer, the lawyer Roy M. Cohn, was credited with helping her attain during President Ronald Reagan’s tenure. She retired from the bench in 2019, at a time when inquiries were brewing after a New York Times investigation into the family’s tax practices. Mr. Trump seemed to heed the words of few people as much as he did his sister’s, according to confidants.

They represent the moral and philosophical foundations for the concrete constitutional rules of culture war that directly apply on campus. One of the most powerful and compelling arguments for free speech in American history was born out of mob suppression. In 1860, Frederick Douglass wrote his “Plea for Free Speech in Boston” after a violent mob shut down an antislavery event. Every college and university — public or private — that receives federal funds has an affirmative duty to protect students’ civil rights. In the recent past, schools have sometimes been too enthusiastic about stopping harassment, defining the term so broadly that university anti-harassment policies actually violate students’ free speech rights.

Ivanka Trump asked a New York appeals court to pause the $250 million fraud trial of her family and its business empire as she appeals a judge's order requiring her to testify in the case next week. New York Attorney General Letitia James urged the appeals court to reject that request, calling it a "drastic" and baseless move that "would upend an ongoing trial." Ivanka Trump was originally listed as a co-defendant as well, but she was removed earlier this year on statute of limitations grounds by a New York appeals court earlier. In Thursday's filing to the appeals court, Ivanka's attorney argued that she is "beyond the jurisdiction" of Engoron's court and that the judge made "multiple errors" when he declined to quash subpoenas for her testimony. Ivanka Trump "has firsthand knowledge of issues that are central to the ongoing trial," James wrote.

CNN —A higher court on Thursday denied Ivanka Trump’s request to postpone her upcoming testimony in her father’s civil fraud trial, shortly after she claimed she’d suffer “undue hardship” if forced to appear during a school week. With the appeal, Trump sought to block New York Judge Arthur Engoron’s previous order for her to testify until an appeal could be heard by the New York appellate court. The appeal also asked the court to pause the entire fraud trial against former President Donald Trump, two of his adult sons and his company until her appeal could be heard. Ivanka Trump’s two adult brothers – Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who both helped run the Trump Organization while their father was in the White House – made back-to-back appearances in court earlier Thursday. Engoron last week ordered Ivanka Trump to testify Wednesday in the trial, denying a motion from her attorney to quash a subpoena.

DETROIT (AP) — A judge wants to know why two men convicted of secondary roles in a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer have been transferred to federal prisons out of state. Morrison was shipped to a federal prison in Illinois, and Bellar is in Pennsylvania. Kaminski, citing the litigation, declined to address why the state shipped Morrison, Bellar and Musico out of state. There is a federal prison in Milan, Michigan.
