CNN —Venezuelan authorities are investigating opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for alleged treason after she expressed support for a US bipartisan bill that seeks to block Washington from doing business with any entity that has commercial ties with the government of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. The US bill – introduced by Florida Reps. Mike Waltz (R) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) – was passed on Monday by the House of Representatives. During a televised event on Wednesday, Maduro criticized the bill and said that the opposition’s actions against him will not be successful. Even after Venezuela’s electoral and judicial authorities announced Maduro’s victory, they have not shown detailed results and electoral records to support it, prompting anger and concern across the country and abroad. Several countries, including the US, have formally recognized Gonzalez as the country’s president-elect following the disputed election.

CNN —Former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who withdrew from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general on Thursday, said Friday he will not be returning to Congress next year. And I’m actually excited to see Northwest Florida go to new heights and have great representation,” Gaetz told Kirk. He also praised Trump’s subsequent choice for attorney general, which the president-elect announced just hours after Gaetz withdrew his name — former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. “My good friend Pam Bondi is going to be a phenomenal attorney general for Donald Trump. “I had a full-time job explaining to senators that maybe a tweet I sent about them was rash and not reflective of how I would serve as attorney general.

CNN —For Donald Trump, every defeat is just the catalyst for his next battle. The Gaetz disaster suggests that despite his big election win, some laws of political gravity still apply to Trump. This may explain why two-and-a-half weeks into his transition, several of Trump’s Cabinet picks are embroiled in allegations of sexual misconduct, ethics or legal controversy. Like Gaetz, Hegseth was not prosecuted over the allegation and denies he did anything wrong. Plenty of presidents get a Cabinet pick knocked back and do just fine.

A woman who had accused the mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor of raping her in a hotel penthouse in 2018 was awarded nearly 250,000 euros, or about $260,000, in damages on Friday after a jury found him liable for sexual assault in a civil trial in Dublin. Mr. McGregor was previously the subject of a criminal investigation in Ireland, his home country, in connection with the allegations, but was not charged. After the verdict on Friday, the woman, Nikita Hand, spoke outside the courthouse, her hands shaking as she read from a page of remarks. She said she hoped the outcome would send a message to victims of sexual assault to “speak up.”“You have a voice,” she said. The allegations have dogged Mr. McGregor, a star fighter known as Notorious who has been credited with helping to popularize mixed martial arts and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or U.F.C., and who remains a major figure among fans even though it has been three years since his last fight.

Hong Kong CNN —In the summer of 2018, when former President Donald Trump launched a trade war with Beijing, the Chinese economy was riding high. There was even talk it could soon overtake the United States as the world’s largest. But last year, Mexico overtook China as the top exporter of goods into the United States, according to the Commerce Department. China had held that perch for 20 years before its exports to the United States fell by 20% to $427 billion last year. A lottery is being held on Monday to determine who will be the 16 people who get to witness what happens next in the case of the Menendez Brothers, who are serving life sentences for murdering their parents in 1989. The drawing will take place between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Pacific time, in front of the Van Nuys Courthouse West, the Superior Court of Los Angeles County said. The seats for 16 people, in a county of more than 10 million residents, will be allocated just one hour before the status hearing is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. The court occasionally holds public lotteries “when seating is limited and public interest is high,” a court spokesperson said in an email. While Anthropic and OpenAI continue to raise significant sums, some smaller companies have essentially been folded into Google and Microsoft. U.S. regulators are also scrutinizing the multibillion-dollar investments that Microsoft, Amazon and Google are putting into A.I. But the deals are seen as allowing the big companies to form deep ties with their smaller rivals while avoiding most government scrutiny. Like OpenAI, Anthropic is a developer of so-called generative A.I., the technology capable of learning from vast amounts of data to create humanlike text and images. Anthropic has tried to position itself as one of the more responsible actors in the field of A.I.

"There is an anomaly in French football and in Parisian football, that it is probably the only big city in Europe with only one big football club. France's billionaire Arnault family, owners of luxury group LVMH and one of the richest dynasties on the planet, is preparing to secure majority ownership of minor soccer club Paris FC — but sees any sporting turnaround as a long-term aim. There are thousands of altcoins on the crypto market that are smaller, cheaper, younger and less sophisticated than the blue-chip bitcoin. "It has not been alone … crypto coins across the board have exploded higher in recent weeks. The riskiest business At the furthest end of the risk spectrum are meme coins like dogecoin , whose trading ballooned after the election . "I'd urge long-term investors to not place too much emphasis on meme coin activity — easy come, easy go," said Ryan Rasmussen, an analyst at Bitwise Asset Management.
