“It’s many, many things under one umbrella.”Although people diagnosed with autism often have similar strengths and challenges, “there are many paths to autism and many presentations of autism,” Miller said. Scientists have identified more than 100 genes related to autism, Miller said, and genes are believed to play a role in 60% to 80% of cases. “We’re making leaps and bounds about known genetic causes of autism.”Yet genes clearly don’t explain every case of autism. But only a fraction of children with the genetic mutation actually develop autism, Miller said. He notes that only 8.4% of the $419 million spent on autism research in the United States is devoted to support and services for people with autism.

A Colorado school bus driver allegedly abandoned 40 elementary school-aged students at the wrong stop on Monday, leaving them frightened in the cold and dark, school officials and students say. The ordeal left young students from Clear Sky Elementary School in Castle Rock distressed, in tears and seeking aid from strangers, said school officials. The Douglas County School District said the driver, Irving Johnson, was a substitute who failed to follow proper protocols. “The driver should have immediately notified DCSD transportation dispatch.”The driver, Irving Johnson, shared an apology for the incident on Wednesday. I didn’t think about the fact that I had kids who got off the bus and this wasn’t their stop.

Those travelers need to get their gates fast and the moving sidewalk wasn’t doing it. The economics of airport moving walkwaysSome experts point to high maintenance costs for removing the moving sidewalks. A group of German economics professors released an extensive study earlier this year about airport moving sidewalks. “The design of Denver International Airport is such that our moving walkways run where our gates are located. Aleinikoff said that while he doesn’t think moving sidewalks are inherently unsafe, they do require regular maintenance, and he says the “teeth” at the end of the moving sidewalks can be “pretty sharp.” Gow has, Aleinikoff said, made a full recovery.

“They made themselves nuclear,” Howard Lutnick, the co-chair of Trump’s transition and his nominee to serve as Commerce Secretary, told CNBC in September. But with the campaign over, Trump’s transition team is turning to Project 2025 to help staff the next administration. Both Homan and Ratcliffe were listed as contributors to Project 2025, while Carr authored a chapter on the FCC. Brendan Carr, a contributor to Project 2025, is Trump's pick to lead the Federal Communications Commission. For instance, the Project 2025 policy blueprint and Trump’s “Agenda 47” featured similar ideas on mass deportations and slashing the federal bureaucracy.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s Treasury secretary pick stands in stark contrast to some of the more controversial and questionable Cabinet picks he’s announced so far. In many respects, the Treasury secretary is the quarterback of the economy. Wall Street was unfazed by the selection. One of the Treasury secretary’s jobs is to help keep Wall Street calm and confident during times of economic or market turmoil. The Treasury secretary works closely with both the central bank and the White House.

After hitting two-decade highs nearing 8% late last year, mortgage rates have fallen, dipping nearly as low as 6% in September. Mortgage rates are expected to stay stuck above 6% for at least the next two years, according to economists and recent forecasts. Home sales are on track for their worst year since 1995 due to home-price growth and elevated mortgage rates. Mortgage rates are closely tied to the 10-year US Treasury yield. The presidential election was two weeks ago, and the country’s liberals are already deep into the blame phase. Before those premature post-mortems get fully baked into conventional wisdom, though, I wanted to flag a handful of observations about the race and how it’s already being interpreted — some caveats, some counterpoints, some context that may help us understand the meaning of a big messy election in a big messy country, at least until we get the actually-reliable voter data. In the end, it seems, Donald Trump’s margin in the national popular vote will be about 1.6 percentage points — the narrowest victory since razor-thin 2000. The election did mark a decisive shift: a broad, uniform move to the right, down to the county level, that carried a Republican to a popular vote win for the first time in 20 years. But this was not a wipeout even like the one in 2008 (let alone 1932, 1972 or 1984).

Barack Obama was elected president, and the mood in the Republican Party picked up on the mood you’ve already described. But in the end, what he did electorally was not in that election to build the pan ethnic working class Republican Party. But at the very least, there was the conventional wisdom was that the Republican Party had to move substantially to the left on immigration. I just think that if the Republican Party is not the party of private property and wealth building, so I don’t think. Is there any chance that the Republican Party is about to not be the party of private property and wealth building No, no, I think you’re right.

These additives, along with high levels of sugar, salt and fat, help create the overwhelming lure of ultraprocessed foods. Ultraprocessed foods are typically high in added sugars, fats and salt; low in dietary fiber; and full of chemical additives, such as artificial colors, flavors and stabilizers. “There’s a lot of debate about whether or not all ultraprocessed foods are bad for you,” Hall said. Most Americans are concerned about what may happen to Social Security when its retirement trust fund crosses a projected 2033 depletion date, according to a new Bankrate survey. Nearly three-quarters, 73%, of non-retired adults and 71% retired adults say they worry they won’t receive their benefits if the trust fund runs out. Social Security’s actuaries project the fund the program relies on to pay retirement benefits will be depleted in 2033. Will business prosper under a second Donald Trump presidency? Trump’s obsessions with tariffs and immigration go way back, and he probably won’t respond well if people ridicule him for not delivering on his signature policy ideas. If he does not moderate his policies, the damage will be considerable — bigger than even pessimists realize. Hostility to immigrants won’t just create labor shortages for many grueling manual jobs that native-born Americans are reluctant to do. As you may know, Trump has declared his intention to declare a national emergency and deploy the military to help round up huge numbers of undocumented immigrants, initially placing them in what Stephen Miller, one of his top immigration advisers, has called “vast holding facilities.”

It’s true that analysts expect the Trump administration to generally be less hostile to mergers. Yet it’s also true that some Republicans – including some tapped to join the Trump administration – have been described as “Khanservatives” because they’ve called for tougher, not weaker, antitrust scrutiny. Earlier this year, Gaetz told NOTUS that the FCC chair’s work “inspired me” and he expressed hope she stays in power for a Trump administration. As Gaetz fights to survive a tough nomination process to be attorney general, Comcast dropped a bombshell in the media industry by spinning off MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Oxygen and other networks. “It’s hard not to look at the spinoff of CNBC and MSNBC as potentially a response to the new administration,” said Petro.

The Twitter approach to government efficiencyDonald Trump picked Elon Musk and the financier Vivek Ramaswamy to tackle one of his administration’s biggest priorities — reducing the size of the federal government. The two have now shed some light on what Trump has called the Department of Government Efficiency plans to do. They appear to be taking a page from Musk’s playbook for extreme cost-cutting. “We won’t just write reports or cut ribbons,” Musk and Ramaswamy wrote in an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal, addressing skepticism that their initiative, known as DOGE, can achieve. (That said, Congress created the public broadcasting organization and authorizes its budget.)

However, the four Biden appellate nominees already faced tough odds of confirmation, with some, like 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals nominee Adeel Mangi, facing opposition among Democrats as well. The Senate deal puts Biden in a position to potentially beat Trump’s record of number of district court judges confirmed. Still, Demand Justice, an organization that advocates for progressive judicial nominees, blasted the new deal for depriving the four Biden circuit nominees of floor votes. Those efforts were always going to face headwinds and got more arduous when Trump demanded that Senate Republicans blockade all pending Biden nominees for the bench. Under the new deal, Republicans backed off procedural tactics that would stymie the confirmations of six district nominees that were on the floor Wednesday night and on Thursday.

The weather is getting chilly in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, but but cold weather doesn’t mean that you have to stop your exercise routines. According to one recent study, people who achieved this amount of exercise per week had a 31% lower risk of mortality, 27% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and 12% lower risk of developing cancer compared with inactive participants. Importantly, those who achieved just half this amount (75 minutes per week) also had substantial health benefits, with a 23% lower risk of early death, a 17% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and 7% lower risk of developing cancer. Are you someone used to cold weather exercise, or are you trying it for the first time? On very cold days, and especially if you are not used to cold weather exercise, go with someone else.

Incoming Trump administration advisers Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy on Wednesday floated ending remote work for federal workers, calling the practice a “privilege” left over from the pandemic. “Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome: If federal employees don’t want to show up, American taxpayers shouldn’t pay them for the Covid-era privilege of staying home,” the two men wrote. The future of remote work for office-based employees is hotly debated. Some unionized federal workers have criticized Musk and Ramaswamy, saying they don’t know what they’re doing. Erwin said the two tech figures “make absurd claims about government waste and bash dedicated federal employees.” His union says it represents 110,000 federal employees.
