Laos has tried to rebrand Vang Vieng as less of a party destination. Vang Vieng and its mountainous surroundings are a base for outdoor activities, including kayaking, jungle trekking, parasailing, tubing and rock climbing. Foreign tourists kayaking and tubing on the Song River in Vang Vieng, Laos, on November 19. “(We are) aware of a number of cases of suspected methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng, possibly through the consumption of methanol-laced alcoholic drinks,” the US Embassy in Vientiane said in a health alert Friday. The warning came after the US State Department confirmed to CNN that an American citizen had died in Vang Vieng.

CNN —Four separate storm systems are churning their way through the West Pacific simultaneously, a rare occurrence resulting from warmer oceans that threatens to bring more misery to the storm-weary Philippines. Satellite images from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center show the four storms spanning the vast West Pacific basin, from Vietnam to Guam. They are Typhoon Yinxing, Typhoon Toraji, Tropical Storm Usagi and Tropical Storm Man-Yi. The fourth storm on the heels of Usagi is Tropical Storm Man-Yi, which is currently about 430 kilometers (265 miles) east of Rota, Guam. Man-Yi is expected to continue moving west, reaching typhoon strength Friday morning, and could potentially hit the northeastern Philippines by early next week.

They’ve pressed forward even though a majority of Americans still see the Capitol rioters as responsible for an attack against democracy, according to the most recent polling. The most pressing concerns are for convicted rioters required to report to prison before Trump’s inauguration in January, and for rioters with sentencing hearings coming up, according to a source familiar with the discussions. “They’re thrilled with the election, but there’s a lot of uncertainty from their perspective,” the source told CNN. For convicted rioters already serving prison sentences, there’s even less hope to get them out based on Trump’s campaign rhetoric, the source said. 669 of the 1,089 approved US H-1B hires for TikTok and ByteDance in that fiscal year were from China. The hiring occurred as US officials raised concerns about TikTok's ties to China. Only 12% of all approved fiscal year 2023 H-1B applications were for Chinese nationals, compared to 61% of TikTok and ByteDance's approved applications. Tech companies that source a large part of their supplies from China could suffer under a second Trump term, according to Citi. Citi analyst Atif Malik shared a basket of stocks that have China manufacturing exposure and could therefore face ramifications going forward. While the company has a very high exposure to Chinese manufacturing, Malik said that Apple is currently making efforts to diversify its supply chain. "China is the main manufacturing location for Apple with more than 90% manufacturing in China, in our estimates," the analyst said. "Manufacturing is primarily conducted through contract manufacturers and original design manufacturers with manufacturing locations in China, Malaysia, Mexico, Taiwan, and Vietnam," he added.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's trade surplus with the U.S between January and September stands at $90 billion. U.S. data shows that the U.S. trade deficit with China narrowed to $279.11 billion in 2023, from $346.83 billion in 2016. Regardless of tariffs, Goldman still expects continued pressure for the relocation of certain supply chains from China to Southeast Asia, India or Mexico in particular.
