People have died after drinking tea brewed from unwashed poppy seeds. Members of the House of Representatives and Senate have proposed legislation “to prohibit the distribution and sale of contaminated poppy seeds in order to prevent harm, addiction, and further deaths from morphine-contaminated poppy seeds.” The bill was one of several on the agenda for a September 10 House hearing. On the other hand, tea made from large quantities of unwashed poppy seeds could lead to addiction and overdose, doctors said. The US Drug Enforcement Administration said unwashed poppy seeds can kill when used alone or in combination with other drugs. The US Department of Justice has brought criminal prosecutions over the sale of unwashed poppy seeds.

In a report aired on Sunday, the broadcaster spoke to wolfberry farmers and merchants in a region spanning 14 towns in Jingyuan County, Gansu Province. Sodium metabisulfite is sometimes used in food preservation but is prohibited in the local wolfberry industry, state media reported. The practice had become so common that workers spoke of it as an industry standard, the outlet reported. Since his early days as China's top leader, Xi Jinping has promised to crack down on food safety breaches, saying they're central to how people perceive the government. Allegations of excessive sulfur fumigation in the Chinese traditional-medicine industry have surfaced before, leading retailers to often sell wolfberries and other products as "sulfite-free."

A designer for X (formerly Twitter) polled users about adding animated GIFs for profile pics. gif profile pics (they’d be optional obvs) — Andrea Conway (@ehikian) November 1, 2023There's one particular part of the minority who feels especially passionate about this: the tiny handful of people who still have animated GIF avatars. Eventually, in 2013, then- CEO Dick Costolo , who found the GIF avatars annoying, closed the loophole. It takes a certain kind of person to write grandiose manifestoes for public consumption, unafflicted by self-doubt or denuded of self-interest. In this vision, wealthy technologists are not just leaders of their business but keepers of the social order, unencumbered by what Mr. Andreessen labels “enemies”: social responsibility, trust and safety, tech ethics, to name a few. But the real problem with Mr. Andreessen’s manifesto may be not that it’s too outlandish, but that it’s too on-the-nose. In the case of ordinary individuals, however, debt is regarded as not just a financial failure but a moral one. (If you are successful and have paid your student loans off, taking them out in the first place was a good decision.

That means it might be time to take stock (yes, again) of how you can minimize your risk. As the holiday season approaches, here is a quick refresher on how to navigate the pandemic. You’ve heard it before, you’ll hear it again: Masks can help you protect yourself and others from becoming sick. So can washing your hands thoroughly and not touching your face with unwashed hands, said Dr. Joseph Khabbaza, a pulmonary and critical care doctor at Cleveland Clinic. The updated Covid vaccines can also reduce your chances of being infected, and especially cut down on your risk of serious illness, said Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, the chief of research and development at the V.A.

But jeans can be more divisive, with some even saying to never wash them. "I never said don't wash your jeans," he clarified in conversation with CNBC's Christine Tan as part of the "Managing Asia" show broadcast last month. Bergh still doesn't use a washing machine to clean his denim. "True denim heads, people that really love their denim, will tell you to never put your denim into a washing machine. This means keeping jeans on in the shower and covering them in soap as you would your body, Bergh explained.

In 1889, journalist Nellie Bly set off on a trip around the world, trying to make it under 80 days. "You see a huge emphasis being placed on building ships that were ever faster than the previous generation of ships," Goodman said. Once aboard the train, Bly began to receive telegrams from her editors and well-wishers. "Sometimes it literally literally just says, 'Nelly Bly's train,'" Behn said. For Behn, what Bly and Bisland did remains incredible and deserve to be remembered as much as Verne's story.

One Reno car wash is turning away burners after caked-on mud and clay damaged its machinery. Finding a way to get them clean is proving to be difficult — and annoying some car wash managers in the process. One car wash said it is turning away excessively muddy cars, due to dirt causing damage to the machinery, AP reported. Neither Burning Man nor Sierra Car Wash immediately responded to Insider's request for comment ahead of publication. Difficulty at the car wash isn't the only issue that the rain and mud caused burners.

But some of its beans, known as unwashed or 'natural' arabicas, have not previously been used for high-end benchmark coffee contracts around the world. Unwashed coffee is so-called because its fruit is left to dry whole before the bean is extracted. He added that relatively little Brazilian coffee ends up in ICE warehouses because it usually fetches higher prices in the physical markets. The two companies declined to comment on whether they had got a mix of semi-washed and unwashed beans certified by ICE. Zooming out to inflation adjusted terms however, coffee prices in 1980 were equivalent to about $8 per lb - a whopping 500% higher than they are today, according to Reuters calculations.

Six years later, Barb was 20 and in college when someone else in the family needed help. Her sister Christy was the second-born, 24 years older than Barb and the star of the family in many ways. Christy wasn’t sad or delusional; she wasn’t even upset. It was more as if she were reverting to a childlike state, losing her knack for self-regulation. Her personality was diluting — on its way out, with seemingly nothing to replace it.

How About More VIP Treatment In Unusual Places?

Last week The Wall Street Journal ran a story about how VIP passes are radically remaking the music festival business. Fed up with getting banged around and having beer spilled all over them by the Great Unwashed, concertgoers are willing to pay $400 for one-day festival passes so that they can be close to the stage, have access to bathrooms with no lines, enter and exit the venue effortlessly and just generally avoid rubbing shoulders with the down-market hoi polloi.

‘Polite Society’ Review: Pride and Plenty of Fists

“Polite Society,” a rollicking genre mash-up, is set in an enclave of well-to-do Muslim Londoners who play along with the comedy’s title until they get cranky. Then come the punches and neck chops, the bruises and broken glass, the ludicrous wire-fu that allows a matron in a brocade lehenga to fly through the air. Stubborn and snotty, Ria is so hellbent on breaking up the betrothal that she’s willing to spy and lie, claw and kick. She gets as good as she gives, ending more than one scene in a bloody, heaving heap. At the same time, the audience can appreciate what Ria is too childish to see: Lena’s joy that the neighborhood screw-up has landed its most eligible bachelor.
“I’m old, I want to die there (in Kyiv). Now I don’t know where I will die,” she told Reuters. When air raid alerts went off, she was in her apartment on the fourth floor, alone and in a wheelchair. A neighbour drove them to western Ukraine and then they took the train for the gruelling journey to Poland. She has no idea how long she will have to stay there and whether she will ever go back to Ukraine.
Cracking ice-cold cases, digging up former associates and unearthing decades-old mistakes by his not-so-beloved MI5 is what really gets the veteran British agent’s blood up. The slow horses of “Slow Horses.”Any season 2 is approached with apprehension, especially when a show has been as successful as this series was in season 1. But it may be even better now, with its likable misfits’ various back stories revealed and the characters established—especially Jackson, played with a malignant flourish by Gary Oldman . His character may not be quite as flatulent as he was last time around, but is just as untidy and unhygienic. (Jackson does suggest an excessively dissipated version of Le Carré’s George Smiley , whom Mr. Oldman played in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”)

And with more women entering the male-dominated venture industry, firms are being forced to craft maternity leave policies on the fly to accommodate new mothers. Forty years ago, the clubby male world of venture capital admitted so few women that maternity leave as a benefit was effectively nonexistent. "There is no playbook about how to take maternity leave or raise a family while also accelerating your career as an investor." Lux CapitalLike in many male-dominated industries, maternity leave as a benefit for investors doesn't come up in conversation until someone needs it. Though, the best policies, investors said, give women choices about how they operate on leave, rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all leave.
