The most luxurious experience of them all, however, could be found in the dining car. The latter was the first train car to offer on-board meals, including regional specialties like gumbo, which were prepared in a 3-foot-by-6 foot kitchen. By the 1870s, dining cars could be found on sleeper trains across North America. But this decentralized production model also contained the seed of dining car’s ultimate demise. And despite a revival of interest in train travel on the continent, dining cars (or certainly those equipped with kitchens) are now largely the preserve of tourist services.

Black women make up less than 10% of the U.S. population, but they've emerged as the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs, new research from GoDaddy has found. The number of Black women-owned businesses in the U.S. was trending upward even before the Covid-19 pandemic, which accelerated entrepreneurship overall. Between 2017 and 2020, the number of Black women-owned businesses increased by nearly 20%, far exceeding the growth of women-owned businesses and Black-owned businesses overall, the Brookings Institution reports. Ofodu's decision to leave Instagram reflects a larger trend of Black women ditching corporate jobs and flocking to entrepreneurship for more freedom, fulfillment and flexibility in their careers. "When I go to industry events, I'm still one of the few Black people or women in the room," says Frelow, 53.

For my undergraduate degree, I went to Yale, and then for graduate school, I enrolled in Cambridge University. Dreary and massive, these buildings belonged to Yale’s oldest secret societies — hundreds of years old, with members including former presidents, Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts. As George Bush wrote in his memoir, “[In my] senior year, I joined Skull and Bones, a secret society; so secret, I can’t say anything more.”In my final year, I joined a secret society at Yale, which was founded 20 years ago. But my favorite memories at Yale and Cambridge were never at events in floor-length gowns or strappy heels. I’m tremendously lucky to have experienced this universe of elite education, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Some of the 30 million passengers expected to fly domestically over this Thanksgiving holiday may be stunned by what’s available to eat and drink 30,000 feet up in the sky. There are onboard espresso martinis, dessert carts and even tapas service. Some passengers believe the complimentary meal and beverage service in the most expensive cabins is the best it’s ever been, both in breadth of options and in taste. From the standard pretzels and Biscoff cookies to pricey cheese plates and sandwiches, the chasm between premier and main cabins continues to widen. First, it was reduced seat space and extra fees.

New York CNN —Ticket and hotel room prices are falling sharply in Las Vegas as the gambling mecca preps to host its first Formula 1 Grand Prix race in four decades next week. Tickets were priced at roughly $2,000 a year ago for the Las Vegas race. Still, in true Las Vegas fashion, some hotels are going all-out with F1-themed weekends packages. Las Vegas is the third US city to host an F1 race, after Miami and Austin. F1 claims that the race will generate $1.3 billion, making it the “single largest special event in Las Vegas history.”

For masterful measuringOMABETA Portable Kitchen Tea Scale $16 at AmazonAs with baking, you will get best results when measuring tea leaves by weight rather than the spoonful. “Some teas are tightly rolled while others are fluffy and light,” explains Ben Marcus-Willers, of Red Blossom Tea Company, a San Francisco-based tea company that sells to consumers as well as Michelin three-star chefs. Desains suggests a porcelain tea pot clad in stainless steel to keep a quality tea warm for hours. Alternately, make a tea concentrate by doubling the amount of tea leaves in hot tea, then pouring it over ice. Tea will always taste best fresh and warm, and its taste will change—“often for the worse,” Kroesen notes—as it cools.

It’s a problem that the guests at the Black on Black dinner, and many others, hope to change. “What we’re trying to do is change what leadership looks like and bring more people into the wine industry. Ikimi Dubose-Woodson leads The Roots Fund, a non-profit working to create opportunities for minorities to have successful careers in the wine industry. “The amount of money and wealth that’s generated in the wine and spirits industry is never talked about,” said Burston. Connection and communicationA lack of communication between the predominantly White-owned wine industry and minority communities has also slowed diversity efforts, several dinner guests agreed.

Single-origin specialty coffee can cost over $30 per pound. That's more than five times the average price of a pound of coffee in the US. The most expensive coffee is grown at high altitudes and is picked by hand, one cherry at a time. But despite the prices a roasted bag of single-origin coffee can reach in the world’s wealthiest countries, the farmers who handpick each coffee cherry struggle to earn a profit. We went to Kenya to find out what it takes to grow high-quality coffee, and why it’s so expensive.
Her rise was tied to a period of reinvention for the wine world during which natural wine conquered millennial taste buds and became ubiquitous on menus across the US. Marissa Ross, Bon Appétit's wine editor from 2016 to 2020, often posted pictures of herself chugging straight from the bottle — a technique she called "The Ross test." "Natural wine," a nebulous term that generally refers to wine made with minimal intervention and without additives like sulfites, was tentatively entering the American wine world. Many in the wine world took the idea that you didn't have to be educated to know about wine as a personal insult. When she first told BA that she planned to cover only natural wines, Ross said, Rapoport called to try to change her mind.
Marina Marchese is one of two certified honey sommeliers in the US. Marchese said the work often involves tasting honey to identify its botanical sources. My origin storyI came into the world of honey tasting by way of beekeeping. Since then there has been a second, which only underscores the point that there are very few honey sommeliers in the country. Unlike wine sommeliers who swirl their glasses before they taste to release a wine's aromas and compounds, we honey sommeliers smear our glasses.
Le Bernardin at 50: Still Going Strong

Fifty years ago this October, on Paris’s Left Bank, two siblings in their 20s opened Le Bernardin, a small seafood restaurant named after an order of monks who were also firm believers in the pleasures of the table. It would go on to expand to New York City and establish itself as one of the world’s most acclaimed dining destinations. “I guess it lasted,” says Maguy Le Coze, who co-founded Le Bernardin with her brother, Gilbert Le Coze, in 1972. Upstairs, a small legion of chefs, sous chefs, line cooks, sauciers, managers, captains, dedicated fish butchers and sommeliers, including the famed Aldo Sohm, is preparing for service. If the day proceeds as most usually do here, they will welcome up to 100 diners for lunch and another 160 for dinner.
Sam Madden, 23, has worked as a nanny, waitress, and bartender in Nantucket and Aspen for six years. I had some money saved to pay for rent because I'd worked at McDonald's and Olive Garden throughout high school. In the main house, there were a bunch of college guys and girls who all worked at the Nantucket Yacht Club, and I thought that their summer looked like so much fun. My manager saw that I had bartending on my résumé from the yacht club and asked if I wanted to start bartending. She lived with a manager of a restaurant called Cru, which is kind of the "It" restaurant on the island.
One of the best perks that comes with The Platinum Card® from American Express is that you can access a ton of airport lounges. This morning, American Express announced another new expansion of one of the Platinum Card's best perks. While the Platinum Card has a higher fee than most credit cards — $695 — it also comes with rewards, perks, and benefits that more than outweigh that fee. The Centurion Lounges are only accessible to Platinum Card cardholders (and people with the invitation-only "Black" card). In addition to the Centurion Lounges, American Express operates eleven "International American Express Lounges" at foreign airports including in Mumbai, Delhi, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Sydney, and, most recently announced, Melbourne.
