A missing Kansas woman who disappeared this year and was found in a freezer buried in a cow pasture in the Oklahoma panhandle was killed in a stabbing attack that left her with dozens of wounds, according to a medical examiner’s report. Veronica Butler, 27, died from sharp force trauma and had 30 wounds, 10 of which were consistent with her trying to defend herself, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Oklahoma said in its report. A Maryland man recently made a remarkable discovery in the Chesapeake Bay: An almost-whole human skeleton that appears to be at least a century old. NBC Washington reported George Oliver, who lives in Calvert County, was walking the shores of the bay on Nov. 4, looking for fossils, as he usually does. Oliver told the station that he could see the coffin, but that it was completely submerged in water. "When I first found it, you could not tell that there was human remains," Oliver told NBC Washington. When he found the coffin, Oliver assumed that leg bone might have been a part of the newly-discovered skeleton.

A police search is underway after 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility in South Carolina on Wednesday night. Police in Yemassee, Beaufort County, said the animals escaped from Alpha Genesis, a business that provides "nonhuman primate products and bio-research services," according to its website. It is also not known what trials the escaped monkeys were taking part in, nor whether they were exposed to any diseases. Alpha Genesis did not immediately respond to an overnight request for comment from NBC News. In 2022, three monkeys escaped following a traffic accident in rural Pennsylvania.

At least one person is dead and others are injured after an equipment malfunction trapped nearly two dozen people underground in a Colorado tourist mine, officials with the Teller County Sheriff's Department said Thursday. Eleven people have been rescued, the sheriff’s office said, and officials are working to get to the 12 people who remain in the mine. The sheriff's office said those rescued reported neck and back pain, and others said they were traumatized by the event. Two children were involved, officials said, but no other details about the people in the incident have been provided. Five people are dead after a small plane crashed on Catalina Island off the California coast on Tuesday, officials said. The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday the twin-engine Beechcraft 95 crashed shortly after it departed from Catalina Airport in Avalon at around 8 p.m. A joint search and rescue team comprised of Avalon station deputies, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Avalon Search and Rescue and Avalon City Fire Department members found the plane about a mile west of Catalina Airport, according to the Sheriff's Department's news release. Part of the Channel Islands, Santa Catalina Island is located about 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles. Catalina Island Airport has a single, 3,000-foot-long runway and occupies a 1,602-foot-tall mountaintop at the center of the island.

I started visiting a drop-in center for homeless youth. I also couch-surfed until I was able to rent a basement room near the homeless youth drop-in center. I turned 40 this year — an age that so many of my homeless queer peers are never lucky enough to see. The queer youth I met at that time built a family with me and saved my life. I was immediately adopted into a community of other homeless queer youth.

(Reuters) - Rescue crews in California were searching for a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter with five crew members aboard that went missing overnight, military officials said on Wednesday, after days of torrential rains in Southern California. The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter was reported overdue when it failed to reach the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, California, near San Diego, after departing Creech Air Force Base in Nevada about 40 miles (60 km) northwest of Las Vegas on Tuesday night, the Marine Corps said in a statement. The sheriff's helicopter was not able to reach the area due to rough weather, ABC reported. The sheriff's department said it also sent all-terrain vehicles to search the area. Firefighters also responded but crews were unable to locate the Marine helicopter, Cal Fire officials told ABC News.

LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) — A man armed with two machetes was fatally shot inside a Southern California supermarket Tuesday after he charged at sheriff's deputies, authorities said. The shooting took place at about 9:30 a.m. at an Albertsons supermarket in Lancaster, a high desert community north of Los Angeles. The man reportedly had confronted people in the store when Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies arrived. They tried to subdue him using stun guns and other methods before he charged them and was shot, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The man had earlier been seen armed with a machete and threatening a clerk at a nearby gas station, authorities said.
