One analyst suggests the market could see a repeat of the 2020 oil price war. AdvertisementRussia's wartime economy could face a tougher time securing needed oil revenue if Saudi Arabia tanks global crude prices. "Saudi Arabia is fed up," Simon Henderson, director of the Bernstein Program on Gulf and Energy Policy at The Washington Institute, told Business Insider. However, some kind of confrontation with Saudi Arabia may be stirring. "Unlike Saudi Arabia, its oil is not cheap to extract, making it poorly equipped to deal with low-price conditions.

An oil pumpjack (L) operates as another (R) stands idle in the Inglewood Oil Field on January 28, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. Oil prices edged lower in early Asian trading hours on Tuesday as traders booked profits after prices rallied to their highest in over a month on Monday amid fears that the Middle East could be on the brink of a region-wide war. Israel has sworn to retaliate and is weighing its options, with Iran's oil facilities considered a possible target. However, some analysts believe that an attack on Iranian oil infrastructure is unlikely and have warned that oil prices could face considerable downward pressure if Israel focuses on any other target. U.S. crude oil inventories are expected to rise by 1.9 million barrels in the week ended Oct. 4, according to a preliminary Reuters poll.

Oil prices fell for a third day on Friday, on course to end the week lower, as investors focused on expectations of higher supplies from Libya and the broader OPEC+ group of oil exporters. Oil prices fell for a third day on Friday, on course to end the week lower, as investors focused on expectations of higher supplies from Libya and the broader OPEC+ group of oil exporters. "The big-ticket items on the markets radar this week have been Libya and OPEC+," analysts at FGE Energy told clients on Thursday. A media report on Wednesday claimed the previously announced reversal is due to Saudi Arabia's decision to abandon a $100 oil price target and gain market share, causing oil prices to slide by 3% in the previous session. Still, the report has set off renewed speculation about a battle for market share at a time that investor sentiment was already at record lows, FGE noted.

Oil prices on track for weekly gain on solid demand outlook

Oil prices fell on Friday but were on track for their first weekly gain in four weeks as markets assessed the impact of higher-for-longer U.S. interest rates versus solid outlooks for crude and fuel demand this year. Brent crude futures were down 72 cents, or 0.87%, to $82.04 a barrel at 0100 GMT. In a see-saw week, oil prices rallied after the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries stuck to a forecast for relatively strong growth in global oil demand for 2024 and Goldman Sachs projected solid U.S. fuel demand this summer. Further buoying the market, Russia pledged to meet its output obligations under the OPEC+ pact, after saying it exceeded its quota in May. This should see the crude oil market remain well supported over the next 18 months," ANZ analysts said in a client note.

The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday approved Exxon Mobil’s acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources as long as Exxon excludes Pioneer’s chief executive from its board. Exxon’s purchase of Pioneer is one of several large mergers and acquisitions in the oil and gas industry in recent years. accused Pioneer’s chief executive, Scott Sheffield, of colluding with officers of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies to control global oil production and prices. Sheffield’s past conduct makes it crystal clear that he should be nowhere near Exxon’s boardroom,” Kyle Mach, deputy director of the commission’s Bureau of Competition, said in a statement. “American consumers shouldn’t pay unfair prices at the pump simply to pad a corporate executive’s pocketbook.”

U.S. oil prices have climbed to their highest level since late October, as the rally in the key commodity becomes something equity investors cannot afford to look past. In other words, the latest ISM Manufacturing report serves to support the view that the U.S. economy is doing much better than many believed it would just a few months ago. Oil trading at its highest levels since late October has implications for stock market investors. The Fed's preferred measure of inflation may be the core personal consumption expenditures price index, which removes the impact of food and energy prices, but consumers still pay for energy. The rise in energy prices — particularly at the gas pump — can result in a decrease of discretionary dollars left for other purchases.

Oil prices rose in early Asian trade on Thursday on concerns of lower supply as major producers are keeping output cuts in place and on signs of stronger economic growth in the U.S., the world's biggest oil consumer. Brent futures for June rose 15 cents, or 0.2%, to settle at $89.51 a barrel at 0037 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures for May rose 15 cents, or 0.2%, to $85.59 a barrel. U.S. futures could rise as high as the mid-$90s if they break a technical resistance level of $84.00 a barrel, Sycamore said. Oil prices were on track to gain for a second straight day on Tuesday after settling up more than a dollar on expectations of tighter supply driven by Russian production cuts and attacks on Russian refineries. Crude oil gained on supply side issues and continued Middle East tensions, according to a note from ANZ analysts. Russia told its oil companies to reduce output to meet an Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, target of 9 million barrels per day (bpd). At the same time, Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries have continued. Russia's Kuibyshev refinery had to shut half of its capacity after a fire broke out there on Saturday morning.

Oil prices rose in early Asian trading, but price moves were limited as the market waited for monthly reports from oil agencies. "Crude oil traded in a tight range as traders await demand estimates from the monthly reports by three key oil agencies," analysts from ANZ said in a note. "While we believe the estimates will be largely unchanged, any upside surprise will ease demand concerns," ANZ said, referring to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the International Energy Agency, and the Energy Information Administration. European markets opened higher Thursday, with regional investors keeping a close eye on the release of preliminary euro zone inflation data for November. Earlier on Thursday, economic data showed that French inflation slowed to 3.4% on an annual basis in November, down from the October reading of 4%. European markets had closed higher Wednesday after data released in the afternoon showed German inflation eased to 2.3% in November, significantly more than the 2.6% forecast in a Reuters poll. European markets are also keeping a close eye on the COP28 climate summit that begins Thursday and the OPEC+ meeting of major oil producers. Elsewhere Thursday, final third-quarter gross domestic product data for France is also due, as are German unemployment figures for November.

Baselines, levels off which cuts and quotas are decided, have been a bone of contention within OPEC+, stalling talks amid UAE pushback in the summer of 2021. But accepting lower baselines would pose risks in the event of future output recoveries. The two countries' baselines for 2024 — and implicitly their production quotas — were due to be studied following assessment from three independent data providers. Two OPEC+ delegates, who could only speak anonymously because of the sensitivity of discussions, told CNBC Tuesday that a compromise had yet to be reached, as the clock ticks toward key meetings between OPEC, OPEC+ and their technical committee. The gatherings were initially scheduled as in-person meetings last weekend in Vienna, before a last-minute downgrade to virtual conferences.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries on Monday said the oil and gas industry is being unjustly vilified ahead of a pivotal United Nations conference on the climate crisis later this week. OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais pushed back against accusations that the industry is not doing enough to reduce carbon emissions. The industry was taken to task last week for its role in the climate crisis and its commitment to clean energy by the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA). Just 1% of global investment in clean energy comes from the oil and gas industry, according to the IEA. Al Ghais also said oil and gas companies are making major investments in renewables and technologies that reduce emissions.

OPEC and the IEA expect China's oil demand to show growth in 2023 of 7.6% and 12.1%, respectively. OPEC has dismissed fears of that demand growth for oil in China is fading, describing negative sentiment as "overblown" in a recent report. OPEC's forecasts show China accounting for 24.6% of global oil demand growth in the first half of 2024, according to Reuters calculations. Consultancies Wood Mackenzie, Rystad Energy and Energy Aspects respectively forecast China's first-half 2024 oil demand to grow by 3.7%, 4.0% and 4.4% versus the same period in 2023. U.S. crude prices fell about 5% Wednesday after the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries delayed a pivotal meeting on production cuts that was scheduled for the weekend. There was growing anticipation among traders that OPEC and its allies, called OPEC+, might implement additional production cuts, which pushed prices higher earlier in the week. Domestic crude inventories, excluding the strategic reserve, increased by 8.7 million barrels for the week ending Nov. 17. OPEC+, for its part, has already taken 5.16 million barrels per day off the market since 2022. OPEC has blamed speculators for the recent drop in crude prices, arguing that market fundamentals are strong.

SINGAPORE, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Oil prices steadied on Tuesday after a more than $1 slide on Monday amid hopes the U.S. would ease sanctions on producer Venezuela and as Washington stepped up efforts to prevent an escalation of the war between Israel and Hamas. Both oil benchmarks surged last week on fears the conflict in the Middle East could widen, with global benchmark Brent gaining 7.5% in its highest weekly gain since February. The Biden administration has been seeking ways to increase the flow of oil to world markets to alleviate high prices.
