AdvertisementIn 2000, scientists spotted a bioluminescent mollusk in the deep sea. It turned out to be a new species of sea slug that's perfectly adapted to the deep ocean. Researchers from the MBARI dubbed it Bathydevius caudactylus and recently published their findings in the peer-reviewed journal Deep Sea Research Part I.Bathydevius is unlike any sea slug the scientists had ever seen. At first, no one knew how to classify the strange sea slug. A sea slug in the midnight zoneA low-light camera system captured the bioluminescence display of the Bathydevius caudactylus sea slug.

Investigating Bathydevius and its adaptations could reveal more about the midnight zone, which is the largest habitat on Earth and accounts for 70% of all seawater on the planet. A study describing the new species published Tuesday in the journal Deep Sea Research Part I. “The deep water column is maybe the last place you’d expect to find a nudibranch,” Robison said. The midnight zone is cold and dark and very forbidding to us terrestrial creatures, yet it is filled with life, albeit life forms adapted to a very different set of challenges than we face. The sea slug is bioluminescent, leading it to look "starry" when threatened.

However, experts warn that what they call prolonged sitting on the toilet can harm your health. “When patients present to me with complaints, one of the main areas we have to delve deeply into is spending a lot of time on the toilet,” Xue said. The pelvic floor muscles are another type of muscle weakened from prolonged toilet sitting. “Make sitting on the toilet bowl as uninteresting as possible.”If you’re having trouble relieving yourself, Xue advised quitting after 10 minutes. Worsening constipation or a need to sit on the toilet for a long time may also be a sign of cancer.

North Korea fighting alongside Russia would be a serious escalation to the Ukraine war. Experts criticized a lack of decisive Western strategy in countering the threat. AdvertisementWestern allies have options to react to the threat of North Korean troops in Russia, but are hamstrung by fears of escalation, military experts told Business Insider. The fact that now a serious escalation looks possible thanks to North Korea is an indication of the failure of that policy, Hunter told BI. Western states are likely to have been quietly hoping that China might step in diplomatically and dissuade North Korea, Hunter said.

New York CNN —Bath and Body Works has stopped selling a candle that was emblazoned with a winter theme that many commenters online compared to a Ku Klux Klan hood. But many people on social media compared it to the hoods and robes worn by Klansmembers. The cancelled candle has appeared on eBay, however, with one person attempting to sell the candle for $350. Candles are a staple of Bath and Body Works’ collection, which has evolved beyond soaps and lotions. Every year, the retailer rolls out its collection of holiday-scented candles that amount to nearly 40% of its annual sales, according to an analyst.

Read previewUkraine has surprised the world with its attack on Kursk, a rare ground invasion of Russian soil. As of Monday, the Kremlin announced that Ukrainian troops had advanced almost 19 miles into the western Russian region. In a public meeting that afternoon, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed his military to purge Ukrainian troops from Kursk. Matthew Savill, director of military sciences at the London-based Royal United Services Institute, assessed on Monday that some Russian troops had been moved from within Ukraine, but the scale is unclear. He said this would likely only be incidental to Ukraine's main strategic goal in the Kursk attack.

Labor Abuses Abroad
  + stars: | 2024-07-30 | by ( Megha Rajagopalan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the 1990s, more U.S. companies began manufacturing abroad, where labor was cheaper. Journalists, consumers and human rights groups noticed that, away from the eyes of American unions and regulators, these multinationals sometimes used brutal cost-saving measures, such as sweat shops and child labor. Companies would hire outside inspectors to scrutinize their supply chains. These inspectors would visit their suppliers’ factories, investigate abuses and determine whether everyone was following the rules. Major companies signed on, sending a message that they could clean up their own supply chains.

London CNN —A twice-stolen painting by Italian Renaissance master Titian, which was once found in a plastic bag at a bus stop in London, sold for $22.3 million at auction on Tuesday. Titian, whose real name was Tiziano Vecellio, made the work in the first decade of the 16th century, at the beginning of his career. Measuring just 18.25 inches by 24.75 inches (46.2 centimeters x 62.9 centimeters), the painting is tiny compared with some of the massive works for which Titian became known later in his life. In 1995, it was stolen from Longleat, the home of Thynne’s descendants, and disappeared for seven years, before it was found at a bus stop in London by art detective Charles Hill. “This picture has captured the imaginations of audiences for more than half a millennia and will no doubt continue to do so,” he added.

Why are bidets just now getting popular in America?
  + stars: | 2024-03-24 | by ( Ramishah Maruf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
It took a toilet paper shortage for some to come around to the 18th-century invention. A common reason why bidets aren’t used in the US is that during World War 2, American soldiers saw brothels utilizing bidets. Big Toilet PaperWhen the great toilet paper shortage hit in 2020, many Americans realized there could be another way to clean themselves. Using toilet paper had seemed, somehow, American, with toilet paper jokes a staple in bathroom humor and “TP-ing” a stereotypical rite of passage for teens. With the toilet paper mania, she decided to kill two birds with one stone and splurge on a Tushy.
