Hard seltzers, spiked seltzers, and their ilk have been marketed as lighter than traditional alcoholic beverages. In the 2010s, the hard seltzers started to pop up, with names like White Claw and Truly, both of which launched in 2016. Advertisement"During the pandemic, hard seltzers really blew up, and I think hard seltzers are one of those ones that were perceived as a little bit of a better-for-you option," said Kaleigh Theriault, an associate director of beverage-alcohol thought leadership at NIQ, a market research firm. The market got saturated, and people started to realize there could be a lot more to canned alcohol than beer and hard seltzers. "So companies are having to innovate more and more, and that has led to some higher-ABV canned cocktails."

The market for nonalcoholic drinks has been growing as more people — notably younger adults — look to cut their alcohol use. Bowdring says there’s emerging evidence that nonalcoholic beverages may prime kids to switch to the real thing. Surveys of elementary, middle and high school students in Japan, where the legal drinking age is 20, found that 20% to 30% said they were drinking nonalcoholic beverages. So minors in those states can buy nonalcoholic drinks but not those with low levels of alcohol. For minors, there’s no benefit in consuming nonalcoholic drinks, and there is some evidence of potential harm, she said — which is why she thinks states need to step in to curb sales.

Why water is the best drink during a heat wave

We know that keeping hydrated is important to staying healthy in the summer heat, but is water still the best drink during a heat wave? CNN: When it’s really hot outside, is water still the best fluid, or should people turn to sports drinks? Energy drinks are different from sports drinks, which are meant to help you restore water and electrolytes. I urge parents to be careful to distinguish between sports drinks and energy drinks. Sports drinks probably aren’t needed, and, again, it’s advisable for children to avoid energy drinks.

The fruity energy drink debuts less than two months after bakery-cafe chain Panera Bread announced it was discontinuing its controversial Charged Lemonade, a beverage that lawsuits blamed for two deaths and referred to as a "dangerous energy drink." The Iced Energy comes in three flavors, including its most caffeinated flavor, Tropical Citrus, which has 205 milligrams of caffeine, according to Starbucks' website. Panera started phasing out the Charged Lemonade on May 7, and it has denied any wrongdoing, saying it removed the beverage as part of a broader menu transformation. Except for its Frozen Tropical Citrus Iced Energy with Strawberry Puree, Iced Energy is sugar-free, containing artificial sweeteners. Charged Lemonade and Iced Energy are part of a growing category called "functional beverages" that chains big and small are eager to jump into, according to experts.

The Promise of Weight-Loss Drugs
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In the past two years, Ozempic has become a synonym for weight loss. Ozempic was weight loss; weight loss was Ozempic. Scientists believe the drugs are about to revolutionize several fields of medicine, such as cardiology and endocrinology. If these trials prove successful, the drugs may extend many lives by years, save billions in medical costs and divide public health into before-and-after epochs. These drugs, called GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists), mystify even the scientists who study them.

The use of weed to replace alcohol is a growing trend in the United States. “We know that moderate alcohol consumption has health risks, and risk increases as alcohol consumption increases,” Boyd said in an email. “Cannabis smoke contains toxins, carcinogens, and particulate matter that have been linked to cancer, lung damage, and cardiovascular disease,” Cohen said in an email. Research on edibles, such as baked goods, candies and beverages, and other methods of using cannabis is in its infancy. “In and of itself, it’s not good that more people are using cannabis,” Grinspoon said.

Last year was called the year of Ozempic, though it was also a year of Ozempic backlash and Ozempic shortages, which could persist for years. Even so, we appear very far from a peak for GLP-1 drugs, like Ozempic and Wegovy, which are powered by a molecule called semaglutide, and Mounjaro, which uses its cousin tirzepatide. It seems possible to imagine a future in which almost everyone is taking some variety of GLP-1 drug, and with a pretty good reason to do so. Patients on Ozempic and Wegovy can lose 15 to 20 percent or more of their weight in a little over a year, and if they stay on the drugs, the weight tends to stay off. Semaglutide has been shown to eliminate or reduce the need for insulin among those with recent-onset Type 1 diabetes.

The percentage of older adults who drink each month is increasing — particularly for women, Koob said. And older adults who do drink do so more frequently than people younger than 65 years old, he added. The impacts of alcohol on things such as driving performance, reaction time, memory and balance are bigger in older adults than younger drinkers, he added. Combining alcohol and medication is also risky, and almost 90% of older adults are taking at least one medication regularly, Collier said. “One study found that older adults are more likely to experience depressed breathing than young adults following a combination of alcohol and opioids,” Koob said.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first-ever treatment for a common and potentially deadly form of liver disease that affects millions worldwide. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are testing their respective blockbuster weight loss injections as treatments for the same kind of liver disease, called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. Madrigal's drug, which will be marketed as Rezdiffra, is specifically approved to treat patients with NASH who also have moderate-to-advanced liver scarring. NASH is a serious form of liver disease characterized by excess fat buildup and inflammation in the liver and can lead to liver scarring, also known as fibrosis, along with liver failure and liver cancer. Roughly 6 million to 8 million people in the U.S. have NASH with moderate-to-advanced liver scarring, according to an estimate cited by the FDA.

Founded in 2017, Athletic Brewing Co. opened the doors to its nonalcoholic craft brewing facility within a year. Unlike other brewing companies, Athletic Brewing didn't cut its teeth making alcoholic beer before pivoting into nonalcoholic options. Instead, Athletic Brewing was founded on the idea that nonalcoholic beer didn't need to be a niche category with limited offerings. Fast forward to 2024, and Athletic Brewing is now dominating the nonalcoholic beer market. According to NielsenIQ data, Athletic Brewing represents 19% of the domestic nonalcoholic beer market, making it the top nonalcoholic beer brand in the country.

5 tips for navigating childhood obesity

Editor’s note: Season 9 of the podcast “Chasing Life With Dr. Sanjay Gupta” explores the intersection between body weight and health. With children, doctors define obesity a bit differently than they do with adults. Severe obesity is having a BMI equal to or greater than the 120th percentile. “Most people who are heavy by the age of 5 or 6 will tend to continue to have problems with body weight throughout adolescence and into adulthood,” Yanovski said. “We know that those individuals will therefore accrue the greatest risks from their higher body (fat) because they’re going to continue to have high body weight throughout the years,” he said.

Dry January “was the perfect eye-opener.”Now sober, Montejano has adopted several tactics to keep herself on track: talking to a therapist, journaling and drinking nonalcoholic beverages like mocktails. By comparison, a 12-ounce glass of beer contains about 5% alcohol, according to the CDC. “The nonalcoholic beverages have a lot of the cues that are associated with real alcoholic beverages,” she said. “Are you reaching those goals with nonalcoholic beverages?” she said. Ultimately, going sober can have social ramifications, so it’s important to surround yourself with people who can support you.

Enter the sleepy girl mocktail. There are many things to consider before you add in — or rule out — a sleepy girl mocktail, he said. Setting a routinePart of what may make the sleepy girl mocktail helpful isn’t what’s in it as much as the routine of making and drinking it. Mocktails not cocktailsThe sleepy girl mocktail could help by kicking out the evening cocktail (or other alcoholic drink), said Dr. Marie-Pierre St-Onge, an associate professor of nutritional medicine at Columbia University. Why It Matters: Rishi Sunak met his inflation pledge. About a year ago, with inflation above 10 percent, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made several pledges to the British public on the economy, migration and the health service. Wednesday’s data confirms that he met one of those — to cut Britain’s inflation rate in half. But even as households may be relieved that prices aren’t rising as quickly, the cumulative impact of high inflation is still being felt. Inflation could drop to 2 percent as soon as the spring, around April or May, according to economists at Goldman Sachs, ING, Oxford Economics and elsewhere.
