Trump is asking the Supreme Court to grant him a sweeping immunity mandate as he runs to recapture the presidency. "This may indeed be the most important US Supreme Court case in the history of our country," he told journalists at a panel organized by the Defend Democracy Project. Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference held at Mar-a-Lago on February 08, 2024 in Palm Beach, Florida. Lawyers for Donald Trump on Monday asked the Supreme Court to temporarily halt a ruling rejecting his claim that he is immune from being criminally charged with trying to overturn his loss in the 2020 presidential election. "Without immunity from criminal prosecution, the Presidency as we know it will cease to exist," Trump's attorneys wrote in an application for the Supreme Court to pause the ruling from a lower court. Trump's immunity claim "presents a novel, complex, and momentous question that warrants careful consideration on appeal," his attorneys wrote. Trump's application for a stay keeps the case on hold, at least until the Supreme Court issues a decision on whether or not to grant the request.

By any measure, cash-bleeding Rakuten Mobile is deeply troubled. Rakuten is set for another tough year in 2024 with investors keen to see if it can achieve its goal of having the mobile unit break even. Those steps have raised some 800 billion yen ($5.4 billion). Then in October, SoftBank Corp (9434.T), Japan's No.3 mobile network provider, began offering a generous reward campaign for most mobile users using SoftBank Group's (9984.T) PayPay online payment system. Without profits, the mobile unit is not likely to entice would-be suitors and competition laws would probably prevent the likes of SoftBank and Docomo from bidding.

Teng faces an especially tough task in transforming the culture of Binance, four of the people said. Still, leading a cultural shift at Binance - a firm shaped by Zhao in his own image - would be "hugely difficult," she said. For years it dominated the crypto market, but this year has rapidly lost market share. Last month it controlled 32% of crypto spot and 50% of derivatives trading, according to crypto firm CCData, down from 55% and 62% respectively in January.

Commentators have paid tribute to Perry and to Chandler in equal measure. As Perry made clear in his 2022 autobiography, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” it did not. Chandler, Perry insisted, was a front. Three weeks before his audition for “Friends,” Perry said he fell to his knees and prayed “God, you can do whatever you want to me. Though Perry wanted to escape Chandler, he kept him around, because heaven forbid anyone saw what he was hiding.

Morning Bid: China data beat overshadowed by Mideast foreboding

REUTERS/Lisi Niesner/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsA look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole. The latest batch of economic data from China surprised by beating forecasts, but was unfortunately overshadowed by fears of a widening conflict in the Middle East following the Gaza hospital blast. Perhaps more importantly retail sales and industrial output for September topped estimates, which might mean Beijing's stimulus steps were finally bearing fruit after months of disappointment. The implications for inflation were another headache for bonds, which were still smarting from Tuesday's red-hot U.S. retail sales report. JPMorgan responded by ramping up its forecast for U.S. third quarter GDP growth to an annualised 4.3%, implying nominal growth of more than 7%.

Reuters reported last month that the cancer research arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), known as the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), was set to make that declaration on July 14, according to two sources with knowledge of the process. The designation as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" will provide an incentive to fund more rigorous research into the safety question, toxicology and cancer experts say. "We have been pushing for an IARC review for many years now." But no action was taken until 2022, after aspartame was again nominated for review by CSPI and Melnick in 2019. The research body has said "new evidence" prompted its aspartame review, without giving any details.

Glass Lewis backs two of Icahn's nominees for Illumina
  + stars: | 2023-05-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
May 10(Reuters) - Proxy adviser Glass Lewis said on Wednesday Illumina Inc (ILMN.O) shareholders should vote for two of Carl Icahn's nominees to the firm's board, as representatives who can challenge the current board would be beneficial to the company. Glass Lewis added shareholders should vote against the re-election of the current chief Francis deSouza and chair John Thompson, saying they had enough reasons to advocate for a new chair. Icahn, who owns 1.4% of Illumina, began a boardroom battle at the gene sequencing company in March. Glass Lewis said in a report it recommends shareholders support Icahn's nominees, Vincent Intrieri and Andrew Teno, adding the company's $7.1 billion acquisition of cancer-testing firm Grail had been a "costly, distracting, value-crimping millstone" for Illumina. However, it did not extend support to Icahn's third candidate, Jesse Lynn, adding that election of all three candidates was not needed.
Things have been difficult for her family, she says, but one thing she isn’t worried about: a midlife crisis, looming just over the horizon. One of our questions was about whether they had experienced a midlife crisis and how they would define the term. Many people said they felt they couldn’t be having a midlife crisis, because there was no bourgeois numbness to rebel against. “Who has midlife crisis money?”The traditional midlife crisis, as presented in popular culture, at least, unfolds amid suburban ennui. We just increase our Lexapro.”Was the midlife crisis ever even real?

The Republican Party needs to get away from the extremists in the party or the Republican Party will no longer exist.
New YorkHave you ever pondered the ruff? That snowy circular collar made of starched cambric, fluted and trimmed with lace? During the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras ruffs appeared endlessly in painted portraits, a sort of rose window rendered with Euclidean precision under noble chins. Also called a “millstone collar,” it served up the distinguished head on a pristine plate. To see an actual 17th-century ruff is a treat, and at the Bard Graduate Center it is just one of many wonders.
