Now, unmarried women are no longer part of an edgy cultural vanguard — they're the official status quo. As of 2021, a record 52% of American women were either unmarried or separated, according to a report by Wells Fargo Economics. Single women also have single men outnumbered: A Census Bureau analysis of 2019 data found that for every 90 unmarried men in the US, there were 100 unmarried women. In a 2019 survey from the Pew Research Center, only 38% of single women reported looking for dates or a relationship, compared with 61% of single men. Even before 1970, it was far from unusual to see American women working for a living.

Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers phenom, became the first player to reach the 50/50 milestone in a season in September, widely considered one of the greatest achievements in baseball history. New Jersey auction house Goldin said it was the highest price paid for a baseball — or any other ball — in history. It was one of three home runs he hit that night alone — his 51st season home run ball is also up for sale. Afterward, attention naturally turned to the fate of the ball, with collectors keen to own such a unique item.

China's real estate market slump has cut into a significant source of revenue for local governments, many of which struggled financially even before needing to spend on Covid-19 measures. Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson will share the prize, which carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million). The authors warned that “the current path of AI is neither good for the economy nor for democracy.”The latest Nobel Prize in economics was announced in Stockholm on October 14, 2024. In “Why Nations Fail,” he and Robinson argued that China, because it lacks inclusive institutions, would not be able to sustain its economic growth. The ball had been put up for auction by auctioneers Goldin, with bids starting at $500,000 and collectors able to purchase it privately outright for $4.5 million. Both Belanski and Kelvin Ramirez indicated on social media that they intended to sell the ball, per the filing. In December 2002, a San Francisco judge ordered the two men to sell the ball and split the proceeds. The ball was eventually sold to comic book creator and producer Todd McFarlane who paid $450,000 for it.

Overall job satisfaction among U.S. employees increased a modest 0.4 percentage points in 2023 from the year prior, according to the Conference Board's annual Job Satisfaction survey released this month. He cited the group's results a year before, when job satisfaction was up overall and for every subcategory. 2023 marks the 13th consecutive year that U.S. job satisfaction climbed incrementally, according to the Conference Board's reporting. Overall job happiness could be a product of workers getting more raises, experiencing more job stability or receiving more benefits, he says. More than 65% of hybrid workers expressed overall job satisfaction, topping the 64% of fully remote and 60% of fully in-person workers who said the same, per the Conference Board's study.

Last week, employees at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., voted by almost three to one to join the United Automobile Workers. By the numbers, this wasn’t a big deal: It involved only a few thousand workers in an economy that employs almost 160 million people. You can quantify this arc using statistical measures like the Gini coefficient or the ratio of top to bottom incomes. The thing is, that relatively equal society didn’t evolve gradually. Wartime wage and price controls were an equalizing force, but the new equality persisted for decades after those controls were removed.
