A Bandaged Trump Shows a Glimpse of Vulnerability
  + stars: | 2024-07-16 | by ( Shawn Mccreesh | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Not since he descended the golden escalator at the start of his first presidential campaign has Donald J. Trump made an entrance as memorable as Monday night’s. A gauzy bandage covered his ear, and his slow and purposeful walk across the convention hall was filmed in the style of a boxer entering an arena. Just as he had mouthed “fight” in the moment after the assassination attempt, the delegates on the floor chanted “fight! fight!” But Mr. Trump did not look to be in a fighting mood. He appeared to choke up.

CNN —By now, the famed photographer Gregory Crewdson’s well-oiled, large-scale shoots are well documented. Gregory CrewdsonCrewdson nods to the Hitchcock classic “Vertigo” and the female lead’s doubled self in this photograph from his most recent series, “Eveningside,” from 2021-22. For the series, the photographer returned to Adams, Massachusetts, and transformed vacant storefronts, revisiting locations from earlier series. With Crewdson’s work, he added: “It’s completely staged, and every detail is thought through. It’s that moment — not the final picture — that he’s always chasing, he reiterated on the call.

Tradwife content has been a social media phenomenon for a few years, and even though the trend creates a lot of discourse online and off, I’ve resisted writing about it because I think it’s a trap. Their posts sometimes come with florid captions about the joy and freedom that come from submitting to their husbands, because biblical submission doesn’t connote inferiority. The whole discussion can be a trap because the content itself is meant to be a heightened provocation — some tradwife creators post things that they label as triggering opinions and then say they get so much hate for being stay-at-home moms. But they rely on that dissonance in order to create more engagement (which leads to more clicks and more money). These posts have a way of painting feminists as haters who resist their true nature and casting career women in opposition to women who don’t work for pay.

Members of this prominent Democratic family, including most of Mr. Kennedy’s siblings, had already signaled their support for Mr. Biden. Just as President Biden does today.”“Nearly every single grandchild of Joe and Rose Kennedy supports Joe Biden,” she said. “That’s right: The Kennedy family endorses Joe Biden for president.”Responding on social media, Mr. Kennedy avoided engaging with his family’s rejection of his candidacy. “I know you’re never supposed to reject a gift,” Mr. Kennedy joked as he held them. He then encouraged the roughly dozen people there to volunteer for the Biden campaign, arguing that their help could decide the election.

On a recent Tuesday night in a dressing room of the Brooklyn Paramount Theater, Annie Clark, the 41-year-old musician who records as St. Vincent, thumbed through a shelf of secondhand records and sipped a glass of pink champagne. Clark, invited to D.J. the venue’s grand reopening party, was the room’s first inhabitant since a major renovation restored the former movie palace; a pristine, new-car smell lingered. She wore a cream-colored silk blouse, black kitten-heeled shoes and a gauzy black bow tied artfully around her neck. Even in a moment of relative repose, Clark possessed a feline hyper-awareness of her surroundings.

The elaborate rollout of a Kennedy family endorsement of President Biden on Thursday — talk-show interviews, a campaign event with the president, planned door-knocking by Kennedys across Philadelphia — was the most powerful sign yet of rising concern in the Biden camp that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent White House bid presents a serious threat to the president’s re-election prospects. Members of this prominent Democratic family, including most of Mr. Kennedy’s siblings, had already signaled their support for Mr. Biden. Mr. Kennedy’s estrangement from much of his family had grown increasingly apparent over the years, as he became a leading spokesman against Covid vaccines and promoted conspiratorial theories about the 1968 assassination of his father, Robert F. Kennedy. But this was the first time Mr. Biden’s campaign had been so aggressively involved in promoting the Kennedys’ strong backing of the president, making an open push to discredit any enduring Democratic credentials Robert F. Kennedy Jr. carries because of his family name. After leaving the work to outside liberal groups, the Biden campaign has now joined the effort to define Mr. Kennedy beyond the gauzy memory of his father and two uncles, who for many members of Mr. Biden’s fraying coalition, including Black voters, Latinos and blue-collar workers, continue to symbolize Democratic politics in America.

It was all very polite. Ambassadors, billionaires, a smattering of Biden family members and even one former president were all in attendance at the fifth state dinner President Biden and Jill Biden, the first lady, have held since taking office. The gauzy celebration leaned heavily into Japanese fans, cherry blossoms and other tokens of the softer side of the U.S.-Japan relationship. The substance of the state visit of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was focused on finding ways to counter China, but the style of the dinner was all about highlighting a capital city that owes its springtime resplendence, in large part, to the diplomatic overtures of the Japanese.

Our attention spans have shrunk over the last half century. Consider Michael Snow’s “Wavelength” (1967), a rigorous 45-minute film made by the Canadian artist that stands as a monument of experimental cinema. Snow understood what he was up against: In 2003 he made a video called “WVLNT: WAVELENGTH for Those Who Don’t Have the Time: Originally 45 Minutes, Now 15!” It wasn’t merely a joke or a concession. Knowing that people were choosing to watch his film digitally sped-up, Snow used the occasion to create a brand-new work, superimposing 15-minute segments of the original onto one another like gauzy layers of celluloid film. What really fascinated him was the question of how we see, hear and perceive reality and how art, language and technology continue to shape this experience.

But all the campus adventures amount to so much throat-clearing before he gets to the gravamen of his argument. In the introduction, he gives a hint at what’s to come: “What is needed — and what most ordinary people instinctively seek — is stability, order, continuity and a sense of gratitude for the past and obligation toward the future. They have been too degraded by an “invasive progressive tyranny” to yield anything other than a populist movement that is “untutored and ill led,” he writes, alluding to Trump. Deneen spends much of “Regime Change” taking cover in gauzy abstractions, so it’s the occasional blunt-force statement like this that reveals what he would ultimately like to see. There is a lot about “the past” in this book and barely any actual history.

“Sorry, that doesn’t happen.”“I also don’t have a D.C.M. who brings racks of clothes into my office and tells me what I should wear,” she said, referring to the deputy chief of mission, who in the series acts as the ambassador’s fashion stylist. “I wear my own clothes.”A gauzy mix of spy thriller and soap opera, “The Diplomat” debuted last month as the most-watched series on Netflix, and remains in the top 10. It has become compulsive viewing in foreign-policy circles — easy to mock for its Bond-meets-Bourne plot twists but also a source of gratification among diplomats, who feel Hollywood is finally showing them the recognition it has long given C.I.A. agents (though the series has one of those, too).
Two weeks after President Biden unveiled his re-election bid, his campaign manager has yet to start the job, his seven co-chairs have not had a group discussion and his team has made little outreach to allies in Congress. For all the attention on Mr. Biden’s gauzy announcement video and the symbolism his campaign attributed to the day he entered the race — precisely four years after he began his 2020 bid and with the same message of saving the nation’s very soul — there is little evidence of the typical preparation for a national political campaign. Mr. Biden’s top advisers insist the limited-release nature of his 2024 campaign is boring by design. They say they are holding down costs by outsourcing as much as possible to the Democratic National Committee while the president’s senior staff members remain ensconced in top White House roles that allow them to engage in campaign strategy. “All of the pieces that should and need to fall into place will,” Jeffrey Katzenberg, the Hollywood mogul and Democratic megadonor and one of the Biden campaign co-chairs, said in an interview.
