Saudi Arabia's first alcohol store has opened in the diplomatic quarter of its capital Riyadh, accessible to non-Muslim diplomats. Drinking is also forbidden under Islam, and most of Saudi Arabia's local population is religiously observant. From there, bottles are often sold on the black market at huge markups, according to expat and local residents of the country. A one-liter bottle of vodka, for instance, typically costs between $500 and $600 on the black market, sources said, while they described a single bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label going for between $1,000 and $2,000. At-home booze making has also taken place in the kingdom for decades, according to expats who've previously lived there.

Kate Phillipson moved from the UK to Bahrain in 2020 with her navy-sailor boyfriend at the time. She says Bahrain is safe and sunny and she has a better work-life balance than she did in London. Phillipson describes life in Bahrain as idyll — as it is for many educated, mostly Western professionals who have arrived in Bahrain like her. There's also a much-stronger work-life balance, she said, with less expectation to be on call outside office hours compared with her London life. "I'd not even heard of it before I moved here, but I don't have any plans on leaving anytime soon."

Traveling abroad is one thing, but starting a new life overseas is another. Expats who've moved abroad say Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore are the top three places where it's relatively easy to settle in, according to a 2022 Internations survey of nearly 12,000 expats around the world. Newcomers say it's easy to get a visa, find housing, access government services online and get around without speaking the local language. These expats are most likely to work in finance or banking, Internations says, and the countries aren't big spots for retirees. New residents there say it's easy to deal with local authorities, open a new bank account and access a robust digital infrastructure.
