The McDouble wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it was certainly passable. The McDonald's website says it should also include mustard, but I didn't taste any or see any. My biggest issue with the burger was that I thought it was bone-dry. But even though I didn't love my McDouble, I'm not writing the meal off. I could always get a McChicken as part of the deal instead or try a different location's McDouble burger.

The labor market has been resilient despite economic headwinds like higher interest rates. "There's still strong, broad-based job growth and real wage growth has been restored," Pollak said. The labor market is in a 'sweet spot'Employers added 303,000 jobs to payrolls in March, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. Job growth in the first three months of 2024 — 274,000, on average — beats the 2019 pre-pandemic average by more than 100,000. "The labor market is settling into a sweet spot," said Nick Bunker, economic research director for North America at job site Indeed.

Please note, that Abbott Laboratories is not listed below as we did not own the name before the company's earnings release. Meta Platforms had one of the best earnings reports of the entire season, as sales, earnings, and cash flow trounced expectations. Despite missing earnings expectations, Coterra Energy delivered where it matters most: discretionary and free cash flow. Honeywell 's earnings results weren't great, with sales missing across the board and segment profit results coming up mixed. Given the stock's reaction, one might wonder why we don't think the earnings results from Palo Alto Networks were flat-out ugly.

Thirty years ago, officials at the Federal Reserve were hotly debating whether the economy could continue to chug along so vigorously without spurring a pickup in inflation. And back in 1994, it turned out that it could, thanks to one key ingredient: productivity. Now, official productivity data are showing a big pickup for the first time in years. If the answer is yes, it would have huge implications for the U.S. economy. And a steady pickup in productivity could allow the economy to take off in a healthy way.

The S & P 500' s latest run to a record high last week took it through an obstacle course of macroeconomic and company-specific hazards. Stocks are not at all cheap, with the S & P 500 at 20-times year-ahead earnings, which probably will mute multi-year returns. The median S & P 500 stock is flat year to date, is up 13% over the past three months, has gained 30% off its 52-week low and is within 8% of its 52-week high. Money market funds were a hot item this year, but it may be time to think about shifting some of that cash into other investments. Investors flooded into the funds, bringing the total assets to $5.89 trillion for the week ending Dec. 13, according to the Investment Company Institute. The Crane 100 Money Fund Index currently has an annualized 7-day yield of 5.19%. Yet, if rates go down next year, as expected, the yields in short-term instruments such as money market funds and high-yield savings accounts will follow suit. The firm also likes stocks with high dividend growth and free cash flow , such as Kroger , CVS Health and Qualcomm .

Uber on Tuesday reported financial results that showed its business was continuing to steadily chug along — and even turn a profit — as more riders and drivers used its platform than ever before. That was Uber’s second straight quarterly profit on the strength of its own business operations — rather than from its investments in other companies — a milestone for a company that had long faced questions about its profitability. While other technology companies have endured mass layoffs and nagging questions about their businesses during the recent economic downturn, Uber has generally produced consistent, positive results over the last year. Its worst days came early in the pandemic, when travel ground nearly to a halt and drivers left the platform. The 6.5 million drivers who ferried passengers and food around the world in the past quarter was a record, Uber said.

The Fed’s policy moves have been intended to slow demand in order to tamp down inflation. Price increases have been slowing down: Friday’s Personal Consumption Expenditures report also showed that overall inflation held steady at 3.4 percent in September. That was in line with what economists had expected, and is down from a peak of 7.1 percent in the summer of 2022. And after stripping out volatile food and fuel for a clearer sense of the underlying inflation trend, a closely-watched core inflation measure eased slightly on an annual basis. Still, Fed officials aim for 2 percent inflation, so the current pace is still much faster than their goal.

How to find a morning routine that works for you

I don’t think my way is the best way, and I don’t believe it’s a universal prescription for the “best” morning routine. Prepping meals for breakfast or lunch can be a part of some people's early morning routines, but you should find out what works best for you. I often get asked how I stay consistent with a morning routine. I’m going to approach this new chapter of life and redefining my morning routine by answering those same four questions. When coming up with a new morning routine, prioritize one new goal at a time and build out a plan to achieve that goal, an expert suggests.

When I received a wedding invitation from my friends Jiyeon Kim and Olof Norlander this year, I knew exactly where I would pick up their wedding present: the bank. The two had already married in Uppsala, Sweden, where they live, but Ms. Kim’s father wanted the newlyweds to have a second ceremony in Changwon, South Korea, where he had spent years attending the weddings of his friends’ and colleagues’ children. As is tradition, he gave the marrying couples envelopes of cash known in Korean as chug-ui-geum, or congratulatory money. Having a wedding in South Korea would allow him not only to share the joyous occasion with his family and friends, but also to offset the costs of the event with reciprocated cash gifts from attendees. “We can’t deny that the surplus in money was one of the good outcomes of the wedding,” said Ms. Kim, 32, who held her second ceremony in May.

Good news is bad news: It had been the mantra in economic circles ever since inflation took off in early 2021. A strong job market and rapid consumer spending risked fueling further price increases and evoking a more aggressive response from the Federal Reserve. But suddenly, good news is starting to feel good again. Inflation has finally begun to moderate in earnest, even as economic growth has remained positive and the labor market has continued to chug along. The economy could still be in for a big slowdown as the full impact of the Fed’s higher borrowing costs is felt.

Revenues beat across the board, Azure's revenue growth decelerated in line with expectations, and companywide operating margins expanded nicely from last year. But total revenues fell a little less than expected, at 4%, mostly due to a 12% decline in Windows OEM revenue and a 18% drop in devices revenue growth. Gaming revenue grew 2%, with Xbox content and services revenue up 6%, offset by a 13% decline in Xbox hardware. In the productivity and business processes segment, revenue increased about 10% from last year thanks to a 15% increase in Office 365 Commercial Revenue growth. Labor supply has also received a boost as some demographic groups — including women in their prime working years — have returned to the job market in bigger numbers than anticipated, pushing their employment rates to record highs. That influx has made the Fed’s job a little less painful. Hiring has been able to chug along at a solid clip without further overheating the labor market because workers are becoming available to replace those who are getting snapped up. The expanding supply of workers has allowed the Fed to accept the faster-than-expected hiring without slamming the brakes on the economy even more aggressively. Many investors are betting the decision, which will be announced on Wednesday, could be the Fed’s final move for now.
