Famously worn by Beyoncé and Jennifer Aniston, the triangle top was inherently Brat two decades before “Brat girl summer” was officially coined. The triangle spawned offshoots too — its sister, the scarf top, was suggestively tied into a bra by Christina Aguilera. Gigi Hadid, on the red (and yellow) "Deadpool and Wolverine" carpet with friend Blake Lively, who wore a red catsuit with lace embellishment by Versace. Emily Ratajowski, Bella Hadid and Sydney Sweeney have all worn variations on the style, with Kylie Jenner repping the same Miu Miu top and skirt set as Hadid’s in black last month. Though triangle tops are meant to seem easy and breezy, they can be a nuisance for small and large breasts alike; they’re also impractical anywhere there’s wind or an air conditioner.

A muse to the designer Jean Patou, Lenglen became tennis’ first fashion icon with her signature headscarf and then-shocking shorter hems. Anne White was banned from wearing a white catsuit at Wimbledon four decades before Serena Williams caused a stir with a similar cut at the French Open. Ian Kington/AFP/Getty ImagesAt the US, French and Australian Open, players have challenged definitions of what tennis clothes can be thanks to looser rules (subject to referee opinion). Though she cited its circulation benefits following a severe blood-clot scare with the birth of her child, the French Open said it would bar the style in the future. However, the Women’s Tennis Association formally allowed it, and Williams continued to wear versions of the bodysuit at the 2019 and 2021 Australian Opens, normalizing the agile and simplified cut for the tennis court.

In a purple catsuit and spiky celestial headpiece, Nona Hendryx beckoned, with a wave. “In the forest of the ancestors.”It was not the real Hendryx but her digital avatar, giving a tour of a new virtual reality project. They both inhabit a world of their own creation, signaling urgently for everyone to catch up. journey was Hendryx’s 1983 electro jam “Transformation” — “Change your mind/Change your skin,” the lyrics go — because, she said, “I’ve constantly evolved and transformed over time.”With each metamorphosis, Hendryx has spun into an even more singular cultural presence. Instead, the conversation largely revolved around what she was wearing: the now iconic superhero ‘catsuit.’And, boy, was there a conversation. “I didn’t know it would have such an impact,” Williams tells CNN Sport’s Amanda Davies. “Here I am, just trying to be healthy, I was a new mom and just trying to be me. It was Dolce & Gabbana. Beyoncé pictured wearing a Dolce & Gabbana mini dress at Wynn Las Vegas before ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl. Comprising an organza cape and catsuit covered in — you guessed it — Swarovski crystals, her stunning red ensemble was one of the evening’s best looks. But then it was back to Usher, who appeared at Keys’ piano in a crystal-embroidered custom D&G vest. “Jermaine Dupri was actually the first person who introduced me to Dolce & Gabbana,” Usher told Vogue magazine in a behind-the-scenes video of his final wardrobe fitting.

The fashion show that changed hip-hop forever

CNN —Chanel’s 1991 Fall-Winter ready-to-wear show was set in Paris, but its soul was right off the streets of New York City. “He listens to everything, reads everything, sees everything, and then distills it into these potent fashion images.”Linda Evangelista and Karl Lagerfeld (center) walk the runway during the finale of Chanel's 1991 Fall-Winter fashion show in Paris, France. Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho/Getty ImagesWhat would become known colloquially as Chanel’s “hip-hop collection” was a watershed moment, the pinnacle of French prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) welcoming hip-hop into its sanctum. It’s unclear whether Mizrahi and the like appreciated hip-hop or saw it as a grab for cache and cash. Beyoncé’s two solo releases before “Renaissance” — her 2013 self-titled album and “Lemonade,” from 2016 — were billed as “visual albums,” featuring a fully realized music video for each track. Throughout the set, Beyoncé wove interpolations of her predecessors’ songs throughout her own, as if to place her music in a larger continuum. The grandiose “I Care” segued into a bit of “River Deep, Mountain High,” in honor of Tina Turner, who died in May. (The merch on sale at a Renaissance Tour pop-up shop in the days before the show included a hand-held fan emblazoned with the song title “Heated” for $40. The show contained moments that sometimes felt conceptually cluttered and at odds with the “Renaissance” album’s sharp vision, like dorm-room-poster quotes from Albert Einstein and Jim Morrison that filled the screen during video montages.

CNN —Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, did not make an appearance at the Met Gala, despite the event’s theme honoring her late owner. Doja Cat and Jared Leto both channeled the blue cream Birman with their Met Gala looks, transforming into Choupette in a mishmash of camp, couture and cat. The Grammy-winning rapper wore a silvery hooded Oscar de la Renta gown — complete with cat ears — along with feline facial prosthetics and sharpened talons on her nails. Choupette, 11, was expected by many to attend this year’s event given how important she was to Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. But she opted to “stay peacefully and cozy at home,” her agents said Monday, rather than hog the spotlight at the Met.
HERE’S A RIDDLE: What are you wearing if you’re basically naked but covered from neck to ankle? If you’re ready for yoga or a black-tie gala? If you could steal some jewels or the heart of your Hinge date? Also known as onesies or jumpsuits, catsuits can be a blank-slate base layer, a glam one-and-done outfit or even maternity wear (see Erika Boldrin below). And while stars such as Lizzo and Dua Lipa love graphic, dominatrix-worthy versions with sheer panels by brands like Mugler and LaQuan Smith, the simple, solid-black catsuit rarely gets the mainstream attention it deserves.
