☆ Dozens of retailers jacked up interest rates on store cards ahead of Fed cuts

Now we see it's very common for these store cards to charge over 30%." Just before the Fed began its rate-cutting cycle in September, many retailers and their bank partners raised interest rates on their store cards to protect their profits when the federal funds rate — which determines their own interest rates — came down. Now, the average interest rate on a store card is at an all-time high just ahead of the holiday shopping season, which is when most consumers sign up for store cards. That was less than half of the interest rate increase for store cards seen from September 2023 to September 2024, when the federal funds rate didn't budge. When asked why they increased the APR on their store cards, the companies that returned CNBC's request for comment pointed vaguely to industry standards and the current economic environment.

TJX Companies touted a "strong start" to the holiday shopping season on Wednesday, but its shares slid after the fast-growing retailer offered guidance that appeared to underwhelm Wall Street. "The fourth quarter is off to a strong start, and we are excited about our opportunities for the holiday selling season. For its holiday quarter, TJX is expecting comparable sales to grow between 2% and 3%, largely in line with the 3% uptick that StreetAccount analysts had expected. TJX is standing by its comparable sales guidance of 3% growth for the full year, just shy of the 3.2% growth that StreetAccount analysts had expected. It raised its pretax profit margin outlook from 11.2% to 11.3%, which matches StreetAccount's expectations, along with its earnings per share guidance.

Firefighters from coast to coast are battling wildfires even as the country begins to prepare for the holiday season, with fires in New Jersey covering thousands of acres in tinderbox conditions created by a historic drought. It's inevitable that this fire is going to continue to burn up until it reaches our control line," New Jersey Forest Fire Service Chief Bill Donnelly said at a news conference Sunday. In New York State the total is 60 wildfires covering 2,100 acres in the same timeframe. One blaze, the Hill Fire in Burlington County, has been burning since July 5, he said. The outcome of this year's presidential election could bode well for different parts of the stock market, according to Evercore ISI. "Trump will be positive for US-only retailers (which have higher tax rates vs retailers with int'l exposure)," Evercore ISI said. A scorching streak in Phoenix has set new daily records for 10 straight days during an October heat wave sweeping much of the West. The forecast calls for this streak of broken records to potentially reach up to 16 days in a row. The current record at a U.S. climate station for the number of consecutive daily record highs is 14 from Burlington, Iowa, recorded during the Dust Bowl in 1936. Dozens more October monthly record highs were set Thursday in states such as Kansas and Nebraska. New York City ranks as the priciest city in the U.S. to retire, according to WalletHub's 2024 analysis of the best and worst places to retire. Following NYC, the two Hawaiian destinations that offer the highest quality of life for retirees — Pearl City and Honolulu — tied for second place. The median rental price for a one-bedroom apartment hit $4,500 a month in August, per Zumper's latest data. That's pretty steep compared with the national median rental price of $1,534 for a one-bedroom and $1,915 for a two-bedroom. The median rental price for all bedroom types in Manhattan is $5,000 versus $4,209 in Brooklyn, according to Zumper.

BERLIN, Vt. — This fall, hundreds of the most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness in Vermont must leave state-funded motel rooms where they’ve been living as the state winds down its pandemic-era motel voucher program. The move is prompting outcry from municipal leaders and advocates who say many don’t have a place to go. The biggest exodus — about 230 households — is expected on Thursday when they reach a new 80-day limit stay in the motel rooms that the Legislature imposed starting in July. A new 1,110-room cap on the number of motel rooms the state can use to house those people in the warmer months from April through November also kicked in Sunday. The households will be eligible for motel housing again on Dec. 1 as winter sets in.

My grandad does 500 push-ups three times a week, and my nanny walks for two hours every day. Fitness has always been in my life, and I think my nanny and grandad are where it came from. Plus, I want my kids to be inspired the same way my nanny and granddad inspired me. Whether they knew it or not, my grandparents' actions have led to all these healthy habits I've picked up. A lot of the healthy habits my nanny and grandad do are free, like walking, cutting out processed foods, not drinking much, and getting enough sleep.
